Louis Rees-Zammit returns to rugby union after calling time on NFL dream

The Guardiana day ago
Louis Rees-Zammit has ended his American adventure and announced that he plans to return to rugby after spending 18 months in the NFL.
Rees-Zammit signed an active roster deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars for the 2025 season after being part of their practice squad for the 2024 season and travelled to London for the games against the Chicago Bears and New England Patriots in October.
The 24-year-old made 32 appearances for Wales before announcing in January 2024 that he would retire from rugby union in order to pursue his dream of playing in the NFL via its International Player Pathway Program.
Rees-Zammit said in a post on Instagram: 'I've got an exciting announcement to make! I've decided to leave the NFL and return to rugby! It's been a great experience, but it's time to come home. I've decided that this is the best time to make this decision to give myself time to get everything in place for next season.
'There's only one thing that's on my mind, that's coming back to rugby and doing what I do best. I can't explain how excited I am! There'll be more news to come soon but for now, see you soon rugby fans.'

The news is likely to come as a welcome boost to recently-appointed Wales head coach Steve Tandy, who takes over a side that ended an 18-match losing streak that lasted almost two years with a hard-fought win over Japan last month.

Scary moment golf star Charley Hull comes within inches of disaster after errant shot nearly strikes rival

England's Charley Hull saw a tee shot land within inches of rival player Minjee Lee in a terrifying moment at the Women's Open. Hull was playing her third round at Royal Porthcawl, when she sent a drive way right of the fairway. In fact, the ball headed on to another hole. 'Oops,' Hull could be heard saying before cries of 'fore' rang out as the ball sailed towards the 17th tee, where Lee was waiting to hit her own drive. The Australian player was busy lining up her ball and did not see the ball coming until it bounced just in front of her. Slow-motion replays showed Lee flinching and taking evasive action as the ball bounced past and settled at the back of the tee box. Hull is one of the most popular figures in golf and despite Saturday's blip, she is primed to challenge for the title over the final round. FORE! 👀 — AIG Women's Open (@AIGWomensOpen) August 2, 2025 The 29-year-old is in a tie for fourth - three shots off leader Miyu Yamashita - after an impressive third round at Royal Porthcawl. Hull shot seven birdies - and just one bogey - in a six-under-par round of 66. That took her to six-under for the tournament. Lee is four shots further back, sitting tied-18th heading into the final round of the Women's Open. After getting a fright on the 17th tee, she escaped the hole with par and is two-under for the tournament.. Earlier this month, Hull was forced to withdraw from the Evian Championship after collapsing twice during her first round at the season's fourth major. In concerning scenes, the 29-year-old, who had been battling a virus, first showed signs of difficulty when she stopped and sheltered under an umbrella 11 holes into her loop. That escalated on the next tee box – hole four on the scorecard – when Hull collapsed ahead of playing her shot and allowed the group behind to go through while she received treatment. After then fainting a second time after her shot, a buggy was called and Hull pulled out of the tournament.

Can St Mirren secure points in their season opener against Celtic? The Buddies are 6/1 outsiders to cause the upset - while a draw is 15/2

Celtic's Scottish Premiership title defence gets underway on Sunday as they go head-to-head with St Mirren at Celtic Park. Brendan Rodgers' side are heavily backed to open their 2025-26 campaign with a win - with the hosts priced at a very short 1/7 according to Sky Bet. Conversely, St Mirren are sizeable outsiders at 16/1 to cause a major upset in enemy territory, while a draw is valued at 15/2. It is worth noting that the last game between these two sides ended in a 1-1 draw - a fixture that also took place at Celtic's home ground. Elsewhere, in a separate market - it is Johnny Kenny who is the best-backed to score the first goal of the game at 3/1. Kenny registered 15 goal contributions while on loan for Shamrock Rovers last season - before returning to Celtic in January and recording a further two goal contributions for the Old Bhoys. Shin Yamada is a 7/2 joint-second-favourite with Sky Bet to score first, sitting alongside Adam Idah on the same odds. Sky Bet odds for Celtic vs St Mirren: Celtic 1/7 St Mirren 16/1 Draw 15/2 Sky Bet odds in Goalscorers market for Celtic vs St Mirren: Johnny Kenny 3/1 Shin Yamada 7/2 Adam Idah 7/2

Motherwell 1-1 Rangers: What Martin said

Russell Martin tells BBC Scotland: "I think we were lucky with what we got, Motherwell were really good."The thing I can't accept is, whatever the tactics are, we got outfought and they were braver than us to play in certain moments."We pick and choose when we want to play football properly and when we want to run hard when it's going well, and then when the game's not going well, we have too many players that want to do their own thing and slip into self-preservation."And this is not me blaming the players at all, but I think it's a problem the club has had over the last few years - when it's going well, it's fine, and when it's not, there's a problem, it's not together enough on the pitch."We have to work out quickly who really wants to dig in and fight and do what we're asking them to do."We didn't run enough, we didn't fight enough, we weren't brave enough. "Thankfully, we got a point."One run and then walking back to your position is not enough, it's not going to be us."I think there will be changes to the team [for midweek], Lyall Cameron came on and did great, really good. And it's not everyone, there are a couple of players who have been really good, John [Souttar] really good, Jack [Butland] really good, Cyriel [Dessers], when he came on, was great."We have a few decisions to make now, and we have a lot of work to do now. I don't think that's a surprise, we're six weeks in, but the problems can't be… the problems need to be tactical and not about mentality."So from the first half of the two European games, we improved in the second half because the penalty was better, it wasn't really a tactical tweak, maybe a little bit but today we paid the price for being nowhere near mentally resilitent enough, strong enough, together enough, so that's what will happen if you don't."
