Ahmad Maslan: Unity government stable even if 9 PKR MPs turn independent
Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan was referring to the nine PKR MPs, including former economy minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, who recently called on the government to establish a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) into the appointment of top judicial positions.
Ahmad, who is also deputy works minister, said the unity government currently holds 153 parliamentary seats.
"All parties contesting in a general election must secure more than two-thirds, or at least 112 parliamentary seats, to form a government.
"Even if nine PKR MPs decide to leave the party and become independents, the government remains strong, and Anwar's position as prime minister will not be affected.
"However, we are confident that Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, and the other seven PKR MPs will not leave the party to become independents," he said.
He was speaking at the Santai Komuniti Madani programme in Kampung Batu Rakit here today.
Ahmad, who is also the Pontian MP, was commenting on calls by 11 PKR division chiefs in Kedah and 19 in Johor for immediate disciplinary action and suspension of the nine MPs following their recent press conference urging the government to establish the RCI.
Ahmad also said that Rafizi and Nik Nazmi, who is the former natural resources and environmental sustainability minister, are leaders of integrity who prioritise national stability.
He said he believed Rafizi and Nik Nazmi, who are the MPs for Pandan and Setiawangsa respectively, would not leave the party because they value political stability and do not want to see the country suffer further political turmoil.
Ahmad said both leaders, known for their stance on stability, do not want a repeat of the political upheaval between 2018 and 2022, which saw multiple changes of prime ministers and caused setbacks for the nation.
On Monday, nine PKR MPs urged the government to establish an RCI to investigate alleged interference in judicial appointments and court decisions, an issue that has raised concerns over the independence of the judiciary.
Besides Rafizi and Nik Nazmi, others present at the press conference included Ampang MP Rodziah Ismail, Subang MP Wong Chen, Wangsa Maju MP Zahir Hassan, Balik Pulau MP Datuk Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik, and Ledang MP Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh.
Two other PKR MPs who did not attend the press conference but supported the call for judicial reform were Sungai Siput MP S. Kesavan and Batu Pahat MP Onn Abu Bakar.

I joined Malaysian Bar walk as a concerned Malaysian, says Nurul Izzah
PETALING JAYA: Nurul Izzah Anwar says she joined the Malaysian Bar's march on Monday (July 14) as a "concerned Malaysian" to ensure that the Madani government continues to protect judicial integrity. "I joined this walk as a concerned Malaysian – to listen, to witness for myself and to express solidarity with the concerns raised by the Bar Council" the PKR deputy president said in an Instagram post on Monday (July 14) night. She also said she was no stranger to speaking up when it mattered "Today, I must speak up again, to ensure that the Madani government continues to protect the integrity of our judiciary," she said. Nurul Izzah explained the three branches of government – the judiciary, the executive and the legislature – exist to keep one another in check, ensuring that no single branch can operate without accountability. "An independent judiciary is the essential bulwark against overreach by the executive, the Cabinet, and the government as a whole. "The most crucial thing in an independent judicial system is the lack of interference from internal or external forces. "As such, persons appointed as the Chief Justice of Malaya; President of the Court of Appeal, the Chief Judge of Malaya and the Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak must not only be capable but also be of the highest moral integrity to carry out the job," she said. On allegations of interference in the judiciary, she said this was substantiated by a police report on the matter as well as a purported leak of the Judicial Appointment Committee (JAC) meeting. "It is important that these allegations be investigated to restore trust in our judiciary. "Investigations can commence under Article 125 of the Federal Constitution through the establishment of an independent tribunal comprising at least five senior judges. "Such actions will go a long way to preserve the faith in our systems," she said. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Nurul Izzah Anwar (@n_izzah)

Rafizi, Nik Nazmi skip Pakatan MPs' meeting with Anwar
Rafizi Ramli (left) and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad quit their Cabinet posts after losing the PKR deputy president and vice-president's posts, respectively, in the party elections in May. PETALING JAYA : PKR duo Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad are not attending a meeting between Pakatan Harapan MPs and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. Rafizi was quoted by Malaysiakini as saying he already knew what Anwar would be 'explaining' in the meeting being held at Seri Perdana in Putrajaya. The former PKR deputy president did not disclose the specific issue, which he said had started to court national attention. 'I was privy to the explanation in the past few months, so I would imagine that the prime minister would explain the same thing. Before this, the issue was not national and the explanation was limited to just a few of us. 'I think that is the reason the prime minister prefers to hold a closed door meeting with the MPs rather than addressing it publicly, because he feels there is some sensitive information that I was privy to in previous months, way back before I resigned (as economy minister),' he said. Nik Nazmi said he could not attend the meeting as he is in Singapore for a trip that was organised much earlier. Rafizi and Nik Nazmi had resigned from their Cabinet posts after losing the PKR deputy president and vice-president's posts, respectively, in the party elections in May. PH MPs started arriving at the prime minister's official residence at about 3.45pm, with Anwar expected to explain several 'important issues' and current affairs. Anwar also met Barisan Nasional MPs on Friday night, which he said was to clear the air on several current issues, including taxation, the RON95 petrol subsidy, and matters involving the judiciary.
