Criticism against M V Govindan in CPM state committee meeting for his RSS remarks

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: CPM state secretary M V Govindan on Thursday faced severe criticism in the state committee meeting for his controversial remarks about RSS- CPM relations at the time of Emergency. The government was also criticised for allegedly giving undue prominence and consideration to ADGP M R Ajith Kumar.
In the state committee, there was unprecedented criticism against Govindan as leaders alleged his careless statement became a political weapon at a crucial phase of the campaign. In a channel interview, Govindan had said there was an association between the RSS and CPM in opposing Emergency. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had publicly reprimanded Govindan without naming him for making loose comments in front of the mike.
'The statement proved a setback for the CPM in the by-election. He should have taken a more cautious approach. The comments were made just hours before the polling. The UDF workers circulated the video clip of the interview and used it against the party on the day of silent campaign,' one of the leaders said.
Some leaders said LDF's opponents and communal organisations like Jamaat-e- Islami used CM Pinarayi Vijayan's reference to Malappuram in an interview to their advantage. 'It was used against the CPM as a hate campaign,' a leader pointed out.
Some leaders questioned the government's partiality towards Ajith Kumar. 'Why support an officer who was involved in the Thrissur pooram fiasco? Even the police chief had submitted a report against the officer's conduct during the pooram. The government must stop protecting him,' they demanded.
'The UDF succeeded in reaching out to dissatisfied voters. Muslim League was behind Anvar's candidature. Anvar was fielded to prevent the flow of the votes of disgruntled UDF supporters to CPM. The Jamaat-e-Islami had been at the forefront of communal propaganda and it ultimately led to Muslim vote polarisation,' it said.

Tension as Congress workers protest near BJP office in Bengaluru's Malleswaram

BENGALURU: Congress workers attempted to siege the BJP office in Malleswaram, Bengaluru, on Saturday. BJP leaders, after learning about the incident, rushed to their party office. Police personnel prevented workers of both the parties from attacking each other. The Congress workers tried to lay siege to the BJP office twice. Police personnel detained the Congress workers and took them in a van. 'Congress workers were taken into preventive custody when they gathered outside the BJP office and protested against the party allegedly insulting former PM Indira Gandhi on the anniverssary of the Emergency. At least 20 of them were taken into preventive custody,' said the police. The protest comes days after a complaint was filed against Karnataka BJP's social media handle over an alleged post put up by the party comparing Indira Gandhi to Adolf Hitler. The complaint was filed by KPCC general secretary S Manohar. 'BJP's official 'X' account (@BJP4Karnataka) at 3.54 pm on Wednesday captioned 'INDIRA NOT EQUALS INDIA, INDIRA = HITLER' was accompanied by a 38-second video related to the Emergency period in India,' Manohar said in his complaint.

Caste dynamics at Andhra Pradesh BJP president election

VIJAYAWADA: There are high chances of choosing a new face for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) State president on June 30, though the elections are set to take place on July 1. Although the party is conducting the elections to follow internal democracy, BJP leaders are known for their discipline in adhering to the party line, and may unanimously elect the new president. Potential candidates include BC leader PVN Madhav from Uttarandhra, Adoni MLA PV Parthasarathi from Rayalaseema, and Vishnuvardhan Reddy, all of whom have strong ties to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), and are expected to file their nominations in Vijayawada on Monday. The BJP's internal dynamics suggest a preference for leaders with long-standing service to the party. The BJP leadership is reportedly planning to allow a Backward Class (BC) leader to lead as the State president. This decision comes after a pattern of appointments following the State's bifurcation, where four presidents were appointed - two from the Kamma caste, and two from the Kapu community, with two having RSS background, and two being former Congress leaders. The BJP's internal sentiment suggests a preference for promoting leaders who have long been dedicated to the party's service.

‘They Moved On…': Shashi Tharoor Appears To Defend RSS On Rahul Gandhi's 'Manusmriti' Charge'

Last Updated: Shahi Tharoor said that historically Rahul Gandhi is right as then RSS chief had said that one of the flaws of the Constitution is that there is nothing of the Manusmriti in it. Amidst the growing rift with the grand-old party, senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Saturday appeared to have defended the Rashtriya Sewa Sangh (RSS) and the BJP over Rahul Gandhi's accusation that the RSS wanted 'Manusmriti', not the Constitution. While answering to a question about the Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition's allegation that the RSS-BJP want Manusmriti instead of the Constitution, the Thiruvananthapuram MP said that historically he is right as then RSS chief MS Golwalkar had said that one of the greatest flaws of the Constitution is that there is nothing of the Manusmriti in it. However, Tharoor appeared to have defended the RSS saying that the organisation has itself moved on from those days. 'Historically, he's (Rahul Gandhi) referring to the fact that that was a criticism expressed at the time of the adoption of the Constitution. Mr Golwalkar, amongst others, said that one of the greatest flaws of the Constitution is that there is nothing of the Manusmriti in it, but I think the RSS itself has moved on from those days. So, as a historical statement, it's accurate, whether it's a reflection of how they feel today," he said as quoted by news agency ANI. Tharoor's remarks came after Rahul Gandhi slammed the BJP-RSS amid the ongoing row over 'Secular" and 'Socialist" words in the preamble of the Constitution. 'The mask of RSS has come off again. The Constitution irks them because it speaks of equality, secularism, and justice. RSS-BJP doesn't want the Constitution; they want Manusmriti. They aim to strip the marginalized and the poor of their rights and enslave them again. Snatching a powerful weapon like the Constitution from them is their real agenda. RSS should stop dreaming this dream – we will never let them succeed. Every patriotic Indian will defend the Constitution until their last breath," he had said in a post on X. His attack came after RSS leader Dattatreya Hosabale on Thursday called for reviewing the words 'socialist' and 'secular' in the Preamble of the Constitution, saying that the terms were included during the Emergency and were never part of the Constitution drafted by BR Ambedkar. Meanwhile, Tharoor's widening rift with the Congress Party has come under renewed spotlight after a string of pointed remarks and cryptic social media posts seemingly challenging the party's leadership. One such post read, 'Don't ask permission to fly. The wings are yours. And the sky belongs to no one." This, followed by a series of similar messages, signaled growing tensions between Tharoor and the party. Amid the buzz, he posted: 'Don't ask permission to fly. The wings are yours. And the sky belongs to no one," the post said. Tensions between Shashi Tharoor and the Congress party emerged after he was chosen by the government to lead an all-party delegation on Operation Sindoor against Pakistan, following which his repeated praise of the government and Prime Minister Modi has irked the party. Tharoor's cryptic post came minutes after Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge took a veiled swipe at Tharoor, saying that while the party stood for nation first, 'but for some people, Modi is first". Tharoor's post prompted a sharp response from Congress leader Manickam Tagore, who, without naming anyone, remarked, 'Don't ask permission to fly. Birds don't need clearance to rise… But in today even a free bird must watch the skies—hawks, vultures, and 'eagles' are always hunting. Freedom isn't free, especially when the predators wear patriotism as feathers." Tensions between Tharoor and the Congress high command further escalated after he praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's diplomacy in an article for The Hindu, highlighting the PM's 'energy" and 'dynamism" as valuable to India's global influence. The article was later shared by the Prime Minister's Office, intensifying speculation about Tharoor's allegiance.
