
Low Danube waters bring huge mayfly swarms in Budapest
Hundreds of thousands, sometimes millions, of mayflies engage in a frantic rush to mate and reproduce before they perish within just a few hours. Mayflies live for less than a day after they hatch, and their abundance is closely connected to the health of the Danube.
Danube mayflies usually start swarming in August, but this year it began in mid-July, and is expected to last for weeks. Researchers say their early appearance in huge swarms could be linked to higher temperatures.
"We have observed that massive mayfly swarms occur in years when the water levels are particularly low," said Gyorgy Kriska, associate professor at Eotvos Lorand University in Budapest.
Earlier this month unusually low water levels disrupted shipping, opens new tab along the Danube, Europe's second-longest river.
Low water means more sunlight reaches the riverbed, helping algae grow, which provide food for the mayfly larvae, Kriska said.
Danube mayflies did not swarm for about four decades as the river was too polluted. They returned in 2012 when the Danube became cleaner due to the construction of wastewater treating plants, he added. The mayfly is a protected species, with the notional value of a single specimen being 10,000 forints ($30).
As mayflies swarm upriver after mating, they can be confused by city lights or the shadows of bridges, causing them to crash on the riverbank instead of laying their eggs in the water.
To help them as much as possible, Hungarian researchers invented and installed special blue lights on two bridges.
"Our lights simply keep them here, ... they continue to fly in front of the lamp ... and crash into the water," Kriska said.
"This way, we can ensure they stay above the water, and the next generation survives."

Italy's opposition warns against involving SpaceX in satellite update
ROME, July 31 (Reuters) - Italy's main opposition Democratic Party (PD) has warned Giorgia Meloni's ruling coalition against involving Elon Musk's SpaceX in the update of a satellite programme, parliamentary documents show, saying the move would pose national security risks. A lower house defence committee approved this week a government proposal which includes replacing an old satellite system, named SICRAL, with a new one. The system, first launched in 2001, has been developed by Telespazio and Thales Alenia Space, two joint ventures between Italy's aerospace and defence group Leonardo ( opens new tab and France's Thales ( opens new tab. The PD asked the government to make clear that SpaceX would not be called in to help launch the SICRAL 3 satellite into orbit. Defence Undersecretary Isabella Rauti said the administration would assess its options, but SpaceX was the most advanced company available on the market. "We only want Italian or European companies to be involved in a security matter such as SICRAL," PD lawmaker and defence committee member Stefano Graziano told Reuters. His party abstained from the vote. Italy's opposition parties have repeatedly urged the government to prevent Musk and his companies from becoming involved in national security matters, amid concerns over the influence he wields through his Starlink satellite service. Europe has been rushing to find viable alternatives to SpaceX's low orbit satellites for communications and intelligence while launching platforms to ensure independent access to space, as pan-European projects still lag behind. Musk, a friend of Prime Minister Meloni, held talks with Italian officials over a potential telecommunications contract, but discussions stalled earlier this year amid mounting political controversy. "The deployment of the SICRAL 3 satellite addresses the need to strengthen national connectivity and provide Italy with strategic independence in long-range communications," Rauti told Reuters. SpaceX did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment on this story. The SICRAL system uses geostationary satellites for confidential strategic and tactical communications, to support defence missions both in Italy and abroad. The Italian government will invest a total 767 million euros ($878 million) through 2028 in the programme, the documents show. Holiday hotspot hit with snake invasion as expert calls for 'thousands of traps'
Spanish island Mallorca attracts millions of Brits each year with its beautiful beaches and warm weather. However, the popular holiday hotspot has been hit with a foreign snake invasion that threatens to damage the local ecosystem. Mallorca is home to several snake species but concerns have been raised as the island has seen a large increase in horseshoe snakes over recent years. Biologist Samuel Pinya from the University of the Balearic Islands told Spanish news publication Diario AS: 'We need thousands and thousands of traps to reduce the population.' Horseshoe snakes are native to southwestern Europe and northern Africa, grow up to around 170cm in length and can swim. And a surge in the reptiles has caused sargantana, a species of lizard, to disappear in several areas. 'Sergansers play a pollinating role in plants. Their disappearance could trigger a chain reaction whose outcome we don't know,' Samuel stressed. He explained the horseshoe snake population 'is much higher than on the mainland'. The biologist urged for fast action against the snakes. 'Either we drastically increase trapping and extraction, or we will have to get used to living with these snakes,' he said. According to the Express, Nicolau Cerdà, from the Association of Organic Farmers and Producers of Mallorca (APAEMA), explained the issues the snakes are causing in Mallorca specifically. He said: 'These snakes are beneficial for farmland on the mainland, but on an island like Mallorca, with no predators at all, they become voracious and hunt all wildlife. 'They have no competitors and cause imbalances in nature.' The expert revealed the impact the horseshoe snake has had on the environment already. He said: 'They've almost wiped out the lizard, and all small fauna, such as geckos, amphibians or small birds like chicks, sparrows or partridges, they wipe them out.' Samuel explained how the population has gradually grown since 2003, and blames the lack of action earlier on for the more recent surge. Mallorca is home to several snake species but concerns have been raised that the disruptive horseshoe snake could be dangerous for the eco-system They are not venomous and are unlikely to be life-threatening to humans. However, they can bite, so travellers should stay away and alert local officials if they spot one. The horseshoe snake isn't officially classified as an invasive species in Mallorca, but is in Ibiza. Joan Company, president of the Agrarian Association of Young Farmers (ASAJA), called for change. He revealed because of the classification, local individuals are left to deal with the problem instead of professionals.

Country diary: The hours pass quickly when you're brushing for trees
We are at the Stori Brymbo heritage site, which was an iron mine and smelting plant until 1990. Outside it is cool, stormy and wet, but we're sheltered under a galvanised roof with the wind rattling and the rain tapping. Beneath us, a sandy, crumbling layer of rock formed 300m years ago from a great thickness of mud and silt that settled in a vast river delta system that once covered this part of Wales. If I squint my eyes, I imagine the vast, stifling, steaming jungle; no grass or flowers, just tall trunks towering above and ferns below, insects flying all around. This was the Carboniferous era in the tropics, long before any dinosaurs or other land animals, and the first 'trees' – club mosses, giant horsetails – grew by 10 to 30 metres in a few months, before dying and falling into the swamps to eventually form our coal. These plants grew so fast and abundantly that they changed the atmosphere, and hastened their own extinction, as we are now. Our guide, Dr Tom Hughes, who grew up locally, wrote his PhD thesis on this, and now he organises volunteers to gently dig and brush away the dust to reveal this ancient forest. The slow process has its rewards. I find a long trunk of Calamites, as thick as a man's arm, divided into sections. Some have curving leaves like giant centipedes. After a while, you get your eye in for the marks you're searching for. I did this so thoroughly on a field trip once as a student that I started seeing them in the wallpaper of the fish-and-chip shop afterwards. Among our other discoveries were a lovely black fern leaf and a bit of a beetle wing-case. Insects were often too delicate to fossilise, but there are dragonflies found at similar sites with 1m wingspans (I secretly hope I find one). Other patches like dark, shiny snakeskin turn out to be diamond-patterned Lepidodendron – another giant plant. The dusty hours pass quickly, until our old hips and knees have locked up. We stumble out into the sun for a drink and look at other treasure seekers' finds.
