SIBU: Journalists are more than just reporters; they are connectors, guardian of truths and storytellers of our diverse community, said Sibu Journalists Association (SJA) chairwoman Florence Nervyn.
Speaking at the SJA installation and Gawai celebration held at a hotel here on Monday, she emphasised that in today's fast-moving world, credible journalism is more important than ever.
'Let us lead with vision, act with courage, and serve with a true heart. Our association must not only survive, but also thrive by embracing innovation, strengthening collaborations and uplifting the next generation of media professionals,' she said.
Florence added that SJA, established since 1993, has been more than just a group of journalists.
'We are a family. We work with dedication to inform, educate, and serve the people of Sibu.'
As such, she urged elected representatives and community leaders to continue rendering their support to SJA's programmes and initiatives.
She said their moral and financial support would empower SJA to organise training workshops, media literacy campaigns, youth engagement programmes, and platforms to strengthen media-community relations.
'With your support, we can do even more for the betterment of Sibu and Sarawak.'
Earlier, in his brief remarks, event organising chairman Akun Giman said the event holds dual significance: the swearing-in ceremony of the newly-elected SJA committee members for the 2025-2027 term, and the celebration of the Hari Gawai festival.
'Let us extend our heartfelt congratulations to the new committee, who have stepped up to lead and serve our association with dedication, integrity, and passion,' he said.
Akun also highlighted that Gawai is a meaningful celebration, marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of a new chapter.
'Gawai is more than just a festival — it is a tribute to our ancestral heritage, a celebration of community and resilience, and a moment to give thanks for the blessings of the past while looking ahead to a brighter future,' he added.
Meanwhile, activities to spruce up the celebration included a 'poco-poco' dance, a 'tuak'-drinking competition, and the King and Queen competition.
Journalist Peter Wee also entertained guests with several song performances, adding cheer to the evening.
The highlight of the celebration was the lucky draw.
Among those in attendance were Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker and Lanang MP Alice Lau; Bawang Assan assemblyman Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh; Sibu MP Oscar Ling; Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng; political secretary to the Premier Joshua Ting, representing Dudong assemblyman Dato Sri Tiong King Sing; and Delta Leasing managing director Dr Gregory Hii.

Malaysia's low oil palm replanting rate linked to rising FFB prices

KUALA LUMPUR: Rising fresh fruit bunch (FFB) prices have become a key deterrent to oil palm replanting efforts in Malaysia, with the 2024 rate falling to just 2.0 per cent against the industry's 4-5 per cent annual target. Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani attributed this trend to short-term profit motives, as higher crude palm oil (CPO) and FFB prices incentivise growers to delay replacing aging trees. 'The price of FFB is one of the key factors considered by plantation companies and oil palm estate owners when deciding whether to carry out replanting activities or not,' Johari told the Dewan Rakyat. He noted that while current FFB prices averaged RM875 per tonne in 2024 – up from RM778 in 2023 – yields from older trees remain suboptimal, creating long-term productivity risks. Industry data reveals CPO prices rose to RM4,179.50 per tonne this year, reinforcing reliance on existing plantations. However, Johari warned that retaining unproductive trees beyond their 25-year lifespan slashes yields from 28 tonnes to just 4-5 tonnes per hectare. 'This capital constraint causes delays in replanting oil palms,' he said, highlighting how deferred replanting erodes future income stability. Additional barriers include Malaysia's aging smallholder demographic and younger generations' declining interest in palm cultivation. The minister emphasised that replanting must be viewed as a strategic investment, despite the temporary income gap during new trees' non-yielding phase. 'Long-term yield potential will be more secure if replanting is carried out in a planned manner,' he stressed. - Bernama

US Tariff: Bumiputera Policies Upheld

Malaysia successfully defended its pro-Bumiputera policy during recent trade talks with the United States while securing a 19% tariff rate, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said in Parliament today. 'We still managed to secure a 19 per cent tariff rate. Most importantly, we defended the Bumiputera policy, which the US considers discriminatory and contrary to international trade principles, but we stood firm that Malaysia must uphold this policy, and in the end, it was accepted,' he told the Dewan Rakyat during Ministerial Question Time. Anwar revealed that several US demands, including challenges to the Bumiputera policy, were rejected outright. However, Malaysia adopted a pragmatic stance on other matters such as trade mechanisms and import-export regulations. 'I didn't want to risk tariff rates of 25 per cent or even 40 per cent. Malaysia is a trading nation, and the US is one of our major trade partners. It's easy to score symbolic victories at home, but the country could suffer and hundreds of thousands of people would feel the impact. As prime minister, I have to protect the people's interests,' he said. He added that the government remains open to concessions where possible, not just with the US but with other partners, including China.
