Chicago Cubs' Tyson Miller to Rejoin Triple-A Iowa or Elect Free Agency
Chicago Cubs right-handed pitcher Tyson Miller has cleared waivers and can either elect free agency or stay with Triple-A Iowa, according to the MLB.com transactions log.

Miller has already had a productive season for Iowa, with a 2.77 ERA over 12 games and 13 innings. However, despite those results, the Cubs felt there was no spot for him on the Big League roster.
Chicago did get an up-close and personal look at Miller last summer when he rejoined the team in May. Over 49 outings and 50 and 1/3 innings, Miller impressed with a 2.15 ERA, a 3.62 FIP, and 42 strikeouts to 10 walks.

Those 49 games represent a significant chunk of his MLB tenure (74 career appearances, 93 innings).
A fourth-round selection in the 2016 Draft by the Cubs, Miller also pitched in two games during the 2020 COVID season before various stops around the country, including the Texas Rangers, the Milwaukee Brewers, and the Seattle Mariners.

Chicago should feel good about its bullpen with or without Miller, as they ranked sixth in the Majors with a combined ERA of 3.31. Porter Hodge may be on the 15-day injured list, but his 5.12 ERA and 4.17 FIP were underwhelming.
Meanwhile, Daniel Palencia (1.96 ERA, 2.73 FIP, five saves), Brad Keller (1.99 ERA, 2.20 FIP), Ryan Pressly (3.96 ERA, 3.88 FIP), and Caleb Thielbar (1.85 ERA, 2.50 FIP) have sneakily formed one of their better four reliever groups in baseball.
Hopefully for the Cubs, Miller chooses to stay with the organization and continue to hone his already solid stuff.

When players go through the Iowa football system, they become so much more knowledgeable of the game and can think football at a higher level than others. That's a big reason why so many Hawkeyes find their way into the NFL and usually stick around longer than some may expect. But for those who weren't able to make it to the league, that knowledge doesn't evaporate. Some players use it to be involved with the game in a different aspect: coaching. And this former Iowa football running back is the next in a great line of Hawkeyes turned into coaches. Bemidji State University football announced on X that it had hired former Hawkeye running back Ivory Kelly-Martin to be its running backs coach for the 2025 season. Bemidji State is a Division II school located in Bemidji, Minnesota. They compete in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC). Kelly-Martin played at Iowa from 2017-2021, appearing in 44 games. He had 181 carries for 804 yards and six rushing touchdowns in those 44 games. He spent a lot of time backing up Tyler Goodson and providing valuable snaps. While he wasn't a star at Iowa, Kelly-Martin was well respected by his teammates and coaching staff and was a true steward of the game. That was evident with his inclusion on the 2021 Players Council. Before accepting this position with Bemidji State, Kelly-Martin was a graduate assistant running backs coach at Baker University in Baldwin City, Kansas. With his Master's in Business Administration all finished up, he can now start his coaching career with the Bemidji State Beavers. Long before the gates opened, in a quiet Yankee Stadium, Aaron Judge stood in the batter's box on Wednesday. He didn't swing the bat he was holding, but it's another step in his rehab of the elbow injury that is expected to have him out until August. According to reports, Judge just tracked pitches from right-hander Mark Leiter Jr. during a live BP session. That allows him to maintain his timing after returning from a right flexor tendon strain. Judge has been hitting lightly in the cage, but this allows him to see live pitching. The Yankees aren't rushing him. With his UCL reportedly intact, the goal remains to get Judge back in the lineup as a DH before he gradually works his way back to the outfield. On Wednesday, Judge tracked and caught balls in the outfield, but did not throw them back in. He lightly tossed them to the side. There's still no official return date, but early August is in play if his elbow responds well. As for Leiter, he's a step ahead in his rehab and could be back soon. Leiter is recovering from a stress fracture in his left fibula and has been throwing off a mound. Yankees manager Aaron Boone said the team is targeting the upcoming series in Texas for his return—assuming no setbacks. The Yankees are desperate for arms, especially in the middle innings, and Leiter had been that key bridge before the injury sent him to the IL on July 7. Both Judge and Leiter seem to be heading in the right direction. Neither move solves the Yankees' larger issues. But with the trade deadline winding down and the injuries still stacking up, any internal help feels like a win.
