Breakout HBCU WBB star transfers to ACC

Miami Herald09-05-2025
Morgan State forward Naya Ojukwu is on the move. After a breakout season in the MEAC, the 6'1" redshirt freshman has committed to the University of California, bringing her game from an HBCU program to one of the Power 4's newest members in the ACC.
Ojukwu averaged 17.1 points and 9.0 rebounds per game for Morgan State during the 2024–25 season in just 15 appearances. Her efficiency and dominance in the paint helped her earn second-team All-MEAC honors. Despite missing several games, she shot nearly 48% from the field and quickly became one of the conference's most impactful players.
Originally from Idaho, where she was the 2020-21 Idaho Gatorade Player of the Year and MaxPreps Idaho Player of the Year, Ojukwu began her career at Utah before transferring to Gonzaga. As a freshman at Utah, she played in four games, averaging 5.3 minutes, 3.3 points, and 2.3 rebounds per game. After receiving a hardship waiver from the NCAA, she transferred to Gonzaga as a true freshman, appearing in nine games. She totaled 11 points, nine rebounds, three steals, and two blocks in 56 minutes before transferring again, this time to an HBCU.
However, she found her rhythm at Morgan State and delivered on her potential. Her time at the HBCU allowed her to lead, develop, and showcase her skills on a national level. That growth caught the attention of the University of California, which is reloading its roster as it prepares to enter the ACC.
Her departure is a significant moment for Morgan State women's basketball, which recently saw longtime head coach Ed Davis Jr. retire after more than a decade leading the program. Ojukwu's move continues a growing trend of elite HBCU talent earning opportunities in major conferences through the transfer portal.
As she transitions to the next chapter of her career, Ojukwu represents the level of talent developing within HBCU programs like Morgan State. Her success underscores the growing visibility of HBCU women's basketball and the impact players from these programs can have at every level of college athletics.

Virginia Tech responds to accusations made by HBCU coach

Virginia Tech has responded to serious allegations from North Carolina Central head coach Trei Oliver. Oliver claims a Virginia Tech assistant coach was on the sideline of the Durham, NC HBCU last season in an attempt to recruit one of his players. In a statement released Saturday, Virginia Tech stated that it had no prior knowledge of the incident. 'This is the first time the issue has been brought to our attention, and no concern has previously been shared with us through any formal channel,' the statement read. 'Virginia Tech takes all NCAA rules seriously and is committed to conducting our program with integrity. We are reviewing the matter internally and will address any findings appropriately.' The comments came after Oliver spoke at a media event on Friday. When asked about the most outrageous moment of his coaching career, he pointed to an incident during the 2024 season. 'Virginia Tech was actually on my sideline recruiting our running back,' Oliver said. 'That was pretty bold. I couldn't believe it.' Oliver said the moment caused a stir during the game. Several of his assistant coaches tried to calm him down, suggesting the visitor was just there to watch. 'He's just down here visiting,' they told him. But Oliver wasn't buying it. 'I knew what it was,' he said. Star Running Back Transfers to UVA Oliver didn't name the player during the interview, but it appears that it was his star running back J'Mari Taylor. Taylor was a first-team all-conference performer and has since transferred to the University of Virginia. Taylor is expected to be part of the Cavaliers' running back rotation this fall. UVA is scheduled to play Virginia Tech on November 29. 'Thank God he went to UVA,' Oliver said. 'And UVA is going to beat the smoke out of them other folks.' Broader Implications Oliver's claim has sparked conversation around recruiting ethics and the treatment of HBCU programs in the modern college football landscape. The NCAA transfer portal has created new opportunities, but also new risks-especially for smaller programs trying to retain their top talent. As Virginia Tech begins its internal review, the coaching world is paying close attention. Oliver's story raises important questions about access, tampering, and respect across all levels of college football. Atlanta Dream star Allisha Gray has an interesting HBCU connection

The post Atlanta Dream star Allisha Gray has an interesting HBCU connection appeared first on ClutchPoints. Atlanta Dream star Allisha Gray has enjoyed an incredible season, earning her a spot in last week's All-Star Game, a special moment she shared with her sister. Gray's sister Ashley was among several other members of Allisha's family to travel to Indianapolis to see her partake in the All-Star festivities. Via her father and sister, Gray shares a very deep HBCU connection. Ashley Gray is a basketball player at Alabama State University. She's entering her senior season with the Hornets, a team that she committed to in November 2021. Allisha was in attendance when Ashley made her commitment and posted about it on her Instagram page. 'Congrats to my Lil sis for signing with Alabama State today for basketball!! I'm so proud of you! Love you,' she said on her Instagram account. Ashley was a standout in high school. She earned several honors, including being named First-Team All-State and scoring 1,000 career points. Fittingly, she won the Allisha Gray MVP Award. She's been a contributor to the Lady Hornets team throughout her time with the team, logging nine starts last season. But Ashley isn't the only HBCU alumnus in the Gray family. Her dad, Allen Gray, is an alumnus of West Virginia State University. While at the institution, he ran track and played basketball while working toward his degree. In an interview with The Next Hoops, Gray spoke about how her family has been supportive of her WNBA journey. 'They're going to get on that road for every home game,' she said. 'That's been one of my favorite things about playing in Atlanta. Knowing I can also drive home to see them on off days is everything, especially the home-cooked meals.' Being able to play for your home state team and get the support from your family is certainly a blessing that has helped Gray become one of the best players in the league. She's currently averaging a career high 18.6 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 3.9 assists for a Dream team that added massive talent to it's roster and looks to enter themselves amongst the contenders in the WNBA. Rivals India and Pakistan in same group at Asia Cup T20 cricket tournament

Associated Press ISLAMABAD (AP) — Rivals India and Pakistan have been drawn in the same group at the upcoming men's Asia Cup T20 cricket tournament in the United Arab Emirates. India is the official Asia Cup host but the tournament is being held at a neutral venue for India and Pakistan. The marquee group game between the two countries is on Sept. 14. The tournament will take place from Sept. 9-28, a top official of the Asian Cricket Council said Saturday. 'I am delighted to confirm the dates,' ACC president Mohsin Naqvi wrote on X. 'We look forward to a spectacular display of cricket!' India and Pakistan are in Group A with Oman and UAE. Group B comprises Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Hong Kong. The top two from each group will qualify for the Super 4 stage where all four teams compete against each other before the top two go through to the final. Pakistan and defending champion India are favorites to qualify from Group A, and that could potentially see three matches between the two if they qualify for the final. Naqvi, who is also chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board, led an ACC annual general meeting in Dhaka, Bangladesh, on Thursday. ___ AP cricket: in this topic
