Lahore. 18 March 1947. Dusk brings with it stray breezes from the north, dispelling some of the day's oppressive heat. Summer has begun early this year, as if to make up for the cold winter we just had. A wheeling flock of pigeons fills the amber sky. Kicking my motorcycle to life, I can smell wet earth, where a bhishti with his goatskin waterbag has laid the dust in the forecourt of the Masonic Lodge. My worthy companions tried to persuade me to stay for another drink before curfew, but their conversations were full of rumours about Radcliffe's Boundary Commission, cricket, and the cost of a passage home to England, none of which I cared to discuss.
The Norton's engine sounds ragged but after I adjust the timing lever, it settles into a steadier, throaty roar. Switching on the headlamp, I circumnavigate a crescent of flower beds bordering the driveway and head out the gate, turning left across Charing Cross and onto the Mall Road. There is no traffic, only an empty tonga going in the direction of the walled city. Those who heed the evening call to prayer are in their places of worship, while followers of other creeds know better than to wander about at this hour, because of the recent violence the city has seen. Studying me with regal omniscience is the late, lamented empress Victoria, beneath a domed pavilion, her statue cast in bronze.
Seconds later, a sharp clang of metal rings out and the Norton shudders as I feel a burning sensation crease my thigh. The crack of a .303 follows an instant later. It's true what they say: you'll never hear the gunshot that kills you. Instinctively, I shift gears and give the Norton full throttle, as a second shot is fired. This one passes over my right shoulder, drilling the air just south of my ear. Lowering my head, I swerve back and forth across the empty road. A third bullet comes after me, but by now I am well out of range and all I hear is the distant report of the rifle, fired in frustration. The shooter must have positioned himself behind a hedge to the left of the Victoria Memorial, somewhere in the shrubs and shadows.
Heading towards Regal Crossing, I race past a line of European shops. Their display windows are lit up for evening customers, though the road remains deserted. Ranken & Co., Civil and Military Tailors, where I got an ill-fitting suit made some years ago. Cutler Palmer & Co., Wine Merchants, whose prices I can't afford. Smith & Campbell Chemists, offering cures for everything from hangovers to syphilis. And JD Bevan, who sells grand pianos, of which I have no need. They all go by in a blur, as I accelerate away from my would-be assassin, dodging a pariah dog that foolishly tries to cross my path. Nobody is in pursuit and the gunman must have escaped in the opposite direction, though I'm not taking any chances. By now, I can feel blood on my trousers and, glancing down, see a dark wet patch, six inches above my knee. The bullet grazed my leg and struck the air filter mounted on the Norton's petrol tank. All of this, I will confirm later, but for now I am grateful to be alive and happy to be heading into the familiar labyrinths of Anarkali Bazaar.
Here the shops are busier, as people hurry to buy provisions before the 7 pm curfew. Unlike the larger, European shops with their bright windows and neatly painted signs, most of the stalls are open to the street and lit by kerosene lanterns. Selling dry goods out of gunny sacks and heaps of vegetables, the merchants haggle with their customers. A goat's carcass, flayed and partially dismembered, hangs from the rafters of a butcher's shop while the aroma of roasting kebabs wafts out of the shadows where a charcoal brazier glows and sends up clouds of fragrant smoke. Gearing down, I weave through the cyclists and pedestrians, as well as a few stray cows. Though some of the people glance in my direction with hostility in their eyes, I feel safer here than anywhere else in the world.
Up ahead, an arched gateway is plastered with Congress posters bearing pictures of Mr Gandhi, appealing for peace. An advertisement for a magician, The Great Mustafa, is also pasted there, and other notices offering the best prices for dried fruit and nuts from Kabul. A colourful hoarding announces a new film at Imperial Talkies – Abida, starring Noor Jehan. I drive through the gateway, manoeuvring between a handcart piled high with onions and a woman in a faded black burqa, who seems to be deaf to the insistent carping of my horn. A few electric bulbs glimmer inside open doorways and a subtle yet cloying perfume fills the air, the mingling odours of incense, opium, and tobacco. Turning into a narrow gulley, I circle around to the back of a decaying brick building and park the Norton beneath a canvas awning. As I swing my leg off the motorcycle, a stabbing pain makes me wince, though I know I'm not badly hurt. Blood trickles down the inside of my thigh, while I fumble with my cigarette case and find a match. Lighting a Cavender's Navy Cut, I can see that my hand is shaking, the flame wavering in the dusty gloom at the foot of the stairwell.
I've been shot at three times before and wounded twice but never like this, without any warning, an anonymous bullet at twilight. Lahore has always had its dangers but until recently, it was a peaceful city. Ever since last August, when Mr Jinnah put out a call for direct action, the troubles started and now it's hard to know whom you can trust. Of course, there's always been resentment towards the British, and anarchists of all stripes have targeted policemen, army officers, and other officials. As I make my way painfully up the stairs, favouring my injured leg, I wonder who the shooter could have been and whether his motives were personal or political.
Champa is in her chambers, curled up on a divan and painting her toenails a livid pink. When I enter through the curtained doorway, she smiles indulgently but her expression changes as soon as she sees the wound on my leg.
'Hai bhagwan! What happened?' she cries, swivelling around and getting to her feet.
'Someone tried to shoot me,' I reply, the cigarette still clamped between my lips, as Champa calls out for help and lowers me onto her divan. 'Bring another lantern,' she instructs the two young women who appear, 'and a chilamchi of water.'
After pulling off my shoes, unbuckling my belt, and opening the buttons on my fly, she removes my trousers.
'Slowly, slowly,' I try to reassure her. 'It's not that serious.'
Holding a lantern in one hand, Champa examines the wound, where the bullet has ploughed a neat furrow through meat and skin. Blood is seeping out and several drops fall on the patterned floor tiles.
Before I've finished my cigarette, however, Champa has cleaned me up. Taking a small glass vial, she breaks the neck and pours a yellowish liquid into the wound. The pain makes me curse and for a moment my head spins like a phonograph. Folding a wad of cotton wool inside layers of gauze, she presses it down on the wound and tightly wraps another roll of gauze around my thigh. Then straightening the injured leg, she places my foot on a silk cushion and makes me lie back.

(Image credit: RTTL X handle) An extremist ethnonationalist organisation has established an exclusively white settlement in a secluded area of northeastern Arkansas's Ozarks and is reportedly considering expansion into Missouri. Return to the Land (RTTL), a self-described private membership association for people with "traditional views and European ancestry," launched its initial community in Arkansas in October 2023 and is now planning to enter Missouri, likely near Springfield, according to NBC affiliate KSNT. The organisation rejects mass immigration, multiculturalism and "forced integration" and excludes non-white, non-Christian and LGBT+ individuals, stating its members aim to distance themselves from contemporary society in favour of rural living. "You want a white nation? Build a white town?" RTTL's co-founder Eric Orwoll asks in an X video promoting the initiative. "It can be done. We're doing it." The organisation's primary settlement spans roughly 150 acres, houses 40 residents, and includes cabins, roads, wells, a community centre, and a schoolhouse. A second location opened nearby in January 2024, with plans for another Ozarks site and potential expansion into the Appalachian mountains listed on their website. In conversation with Sky News journalist Tom Cheshire, who visited RTTL's first settlement and observed activities including goat milk production, flute performances, family sports and swimming, Orwoll expressed longing for 17th-century colonial America. "I would probably feel more comfortable there because I'm white and that's the way this country was when my ancestors came there," he remarked, disregarding the indigenous population displaced by colonisation," he said. "Even if an individual has all the same values that I have, if they have an ethnic identity that other people share and care about, their children will also have that identity, and their children might not necessarily have all the same beliefs that they have," Cheshire further added. Regarding RTTL's growth plans, he said, "I would like to have more communities so that people in all parts of the U.S. have this as an option if they want. I would also like us to network and branch out internationally." Their expansion efforts include online fundraising, including a campaign offering financial incentives to parents of newborns to encourage population growth, which had reached half of its $10,000 target. Despite promoting rural living, RTTL maintains an active social media presence, sharing construction updates, nature photography, and children's book illustrations to promote their pastoral vision. Orwoll, who presents his project as a matter of First Amendment rights and private property freedom, has invested significantly in legal research. "The attorneys we've consulted believe what we're doing is legal," he told KSNT. "Americans have the right to freely associate and form intentional communities on whatever basis they choose." He believes RTTL's private membership association status exempts it from anti-discrimination laws like the Civil Rights Act and Fair Housing Act, though legal experts dispute this interpretation. Arkansas Attorney General Tim Griffin responded, "Racial discrimination has no place in Arkansas or anywhere in a free society. These allegations raise all sorts of legal issues, including constitutional concerns. My office is reviewing the matter." Barry Jefferson, Arkansas NAACP chapter president, said: "I just truly believe that we don't need to get back to the Jim Crow era. We've been through that before. I think no one should be discriminated against because of their skin colour. "If you really look deep into the Civil Rights Act, it doesn't state that. I think they're misunderstanding what it states because there have been many organisations that tried to carve that out. That's not right," he added. The Anti-Defamation League has directly criticised RTTL, stating it attempts to resurrect "discredited and reprehensible forms of segregation." When questioned about racist elements within his organisation, including white supremacist content in its Telegram channel and his views on Adolf Hitler's "second coming," Orwoll maintained that conventional perspectives on the Nazi leader are "one-sided" and influenced by wartime propaganda. "I think all historical figures are complex, multi-dimensional," he said. "But when I say, 'you're gonna have to wait for that new Hitler to arise', I'm not saying you're going to have to wait for a new person to start a new Holocaust," Orwoll further said, adding to his statement that, "I am saying you are going to wait for a charismatic leader who is going to advocate for your interests because that's how a lot of people see Hitler."

HYDERABAD: A new waste-to-energy plant being set up in Jawaharnagar is in the final stages of preparation and is expected to start operating in August, according to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). The facility is designed to process 300 tonnes of compostable waste per day using a method called dry bio-methanation. This is a fully enclosed system where organic waste is turned into biogas and compost. The biogas will be used to produce bio-CNG (compressed natural gas), while the leftover material will be turned into high-quality compost for agricultural use. Officials said this eco-friendly process is already in use in several European countries. It helps reduce the volume of waste and generates clean energy, which can replace fossil fuels and reduce carbon emissions. GHMC officials said the plant uses the 'Muller 3A' method — a three-stage process involving aerobic (with air), anaerobic (without air) and aerobic treatment again. Unlike traditional wet biogas systems, the dry method used here doesn't need a lot of water or complex treatments. Born on this day in 1938, Sudhir Kakar, the 'father of Indian psychoanalysis', is celebrated for bringing a distinct 'Indianness' to the field. Psychoanalysis is a theory of mind and a clinical practice developed by Sigmund Freud. It primarily focuses on the relationship between 'conscious' thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, and the 'unconscious' mind. Notably, Freud and others after him emphasised upon the discipline's universality. By interpreting the Indian psyche through myths and societal norms, Kakar infused psychoanalysis with an Indian cultural richness, and redefined how the discipline could engage with non-Western minds. His ideas continue to reshape how India thinks about the mind, culture, and identity today. Kakar passed away last year. Kakar believed that Freud's theories, while revolutionary, were embedded in European culture, meaning they often failed to resonate with Indian psychological realities. He argued that Indian culture views reality differently from the post-Enlightenment West. 'In the traditional Indian view, which still exerts a powerful influence on how even most modern Indians view marriage and family, parent-sons and filial bonds among the sons living in an extended family override the importance of the couple as the foundation of the family,' he said in an address to the Indian Psychoanalytic Society in 2022. But rather than rejecting psychoanalysis, Kakar expanded it by interpreting the unconscious through the lens of Indian myths, familial structures, and spiritual traditions. He introduced concepts such as the 'Ganesha Complex' as an Indian-alternative to Freud's influential Oedipus Complex, which borrowed from Greek mythology to explain a son's sexual attitude to his mother and hostility towards the father. 'My main argument is that the ''hegemonic narrative'' of Hindu culture as far as male development is concerned is neither that of Freud's Oedipus nor that of Christianity's Adam,' he wrote in 'Hindu Myth and Psychoanalytic Concepts: The Ganesha Complex' published in Asian Culture and Psychotherapy: Implications for East and West (2005). Kakar used the myth of Skanda (also known as Kartikeya) and Ganesha to explain India's culturally sanctioned dependence on the maternal figure. Unlike Skanda, Ganesha in the myth chooses maternal closeness over heroic independence. 'By remaining an infant… Ganesha will never know the pangs of separation from the mother… That Ganesha's lot is considered superior to Skanda's is perhaps an indication of the Indian man's cultural preference in the dilemma of separation-individuation,' Kakar wrote. Kakar drew heavily from Indian epics, folklore, and even popular cinema to reveal how collective fantasies shape the unconscious. 'The self,' he said 'is a system of reverberating representational worlds — representations of culture, primary family relationships and bodily life.' While Kakar's work itself was rooted in Hindu culture, he envisioned an Indian psychoanalysis that would engage critically with Western theories. 'The wish is that a future generation of Indian analysts realises that a critical stance is now needed after a long, much too long phase of idealisation of Western analytic gurus,' he said. Psychoanalysts in India today draw deeply from Kakar's reimagining of psychoanalysis, integrating his culturally rooted insights into clinical practice, specifically acknowledging the imprint of collective histories, myths, and identities on the unconscious. As Amrita Narayanan, a clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst, wrote in 'An Elastic Indianness: In Memory of Sudhir Kakar' (2024), Kakar believed that the Indian 'ego', formed through the blurring of self and other, was fundamentally different than the Western, autonomous conception. 'The 'I am' and 'we are' are birthed simultaneously for Indians,' she wrote, suggesting that for many, social expectations are internalised as personal desires. This deep enmeshment of self and community has major implications for how therapists understand emotional conflict, sexuality, and even violence. 'Much like Freud, Kakar's quest for clues in folk tales, fables, and epics holds the reimagination of Indianness, in which the self yearns for spirituality,' said Pulkit Sharma, a clinical psychologist and psychotherapist. For many clinicians, Kakar's recognition of India's spiritual imagination, through epics, rituals, and mythology, reshaped what counts as healing. Myths of Ganesha and Ram, used by Kakar to illustrate the nurturing and sacrificial Indian son, challenged Western tropes like Oedipus and offered a new vocabulary for male development. Similarly, fantasies of femininity, coded as nurturing, maternal, and emotionally sensitive, are central rather than deviant. 'In the clinical room, sensitivity is given to caste, religion, gender, family, generational myths, and traditions that shape the subjectivity of the client. All of it informs the therapist about indigenous narratives and themes that help in learning the unconscious script. This accessibility serves as a guide to meaningful therapeutic growth,' Sharma said. 'The psychotherapist must know that it's not merely a defence, but a well-meaning psychological structure that fosters healing. The psychopathology is not intrapsychic but extrapsychic in Kakar's works. It further carries the ruptures of colonialism, modernity, and globalisation,' he added.
