Welcome To The Village With Four Names And Zero Clarity
A single village in Thar has four different names on signboards and official documents. This naming confusion is disrupting services like Aadhar, ration cards and education A curious conundrum has taken root in the sandy heart of the Thar, where an otherwise unassuming village near Barmer in Rajasthan is facing an identity crisis, not of its people, but of its name. Despite the village, its streets, and its residents remaining unchanged, the name displayed across official boards and documents varies wildly, creating confusion for locals and visitors alike. Dialects And Definitions Government documents refer to the village as 'Para', a term rooted in the local dialect meaning a specific direction or settlement. This version is also emblazoned on the signage of the village's sub-health centre. However, the welcome board at the entrance to the village boldly declares its name as 'Pada', which in the regional language implies the settlement of a particular community or neighbour. To further complicate matters, the local government-run school is registered as 'Paro', specifically Rajkiya Prathmik Vidyalaya Vindaniyon Ki Dhani, Paro. In local usage, 'Paro' typically denotes something that lies 'within' or 'beyond' a particular area. This trifecta of identities, that is, Para, Pada, and Paro, has left even villagers scratching their heads, unsure which name to use in official matters. A fourth variation, also 'Parah', appears on roadside signage, only adding to the chaos. Impact On Documents And Public Schemes The naming discrepancy isn't merely a linguistic quirk; it's having serious repercussions. Located approximately 30 kilometres from Barmer district headquarters, the village's residents report inconsistencies across crucial documents such as Aadhaar cards, ration cards, land records, and leases, with names alternating between 'Paro' and 'Para'. This mismatch has hindered access to banking services, school enrolments, and government welfare schemes, with many residents being denied benefits due to name mismatches. A Call For Consistency Locals say they often struggle to convince officials and service providers that the differing names refer to the same place. 'If the school says 'Paro' and the health centre says 'Para', even we don't know which one is right anymore", one resident remarked. Until a unified naming standard is adopted across all government departments and services, the village will continue to wrestle with the strange burden of having too many names, but no clear identity. view comments First Published: July 18, 2025, 15:30 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. UIDAI advisory: Your child's AADHAAR may be deactivated if …
Aadhar card The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has issued a new advisory for the parents of children who have turned seven years old. UIDAI is urging the parents to complete the Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU) for children who have turned 7 years old. UIDAI has also warned that if the parents don't complete the mandatory process then the Aadhaar card of their children will be deactivated. The warning comes as the UIDAI observes a significant number of children whose biometric data remains un-updated, despite existing regulations. UIDAI warns parents: Children's Aadhaar may be deactivated without biometric update As per the present rules under the Aadhaar Act 2016, children have to undergo a Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU) after five years of age. The process of MBU requires updating their fingerprints, iris scans, and facial images, as these attributes are considered mature enough for accurate capture at this age. However, UIDAI noticed that many parents have not complied with this requirement. So, UIDAI has now warned the parents that Aadhaar card of their children will get deactivated if they don't get the biometrics updated. 'Timely completion of MBU is an essential requirement for maintaining the accuracy and reliability of biometric data of children. If the MBU is not completed even after 7 years of age, the Aadhaar number may be deactivated, as per the existing rules,' said UIDAI. In the SMS UIDAI is urging the parents to complete the necessary MBU exercise. 'As per existing rules, therefore, fingerprints, iris and photo are mandatorily required to be updated in his/her Aadhaar when the child reaches the age of five years. This is called first Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU). If the child performs the MBU between the age of five and seven years, it is free of cost. But after seven years of age, there is a prescribed fee of Rs. 100 only,' said UIDAI. 'Timely completion of MBU is an essential requirement for maintaining the accuracy and reliability of biometric data of children. If the MBU is not completed even after 7 years of age, the Aadhaar number may be deactivated, as per the existing rules,' added UIDAI. AI Masterclass for Students. Upskill Young Ones Today!– Join Now
