New Delhi: Nuclear power contributed about 3 per cent to the total electricity generated in India in 2024-25, with
nuclear power plants
producing 56,681 million units (MUs) of electricity during the period, the government informed the
Lok Sabha
on Wednesday.
Presenting the data, Union Minister of State for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, Dr. Jitendra Singh stated that the government has set a target of achieving 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047 under its Nuclear Energy Mission. This would involve expanding both domestic and imported nuclear fuel sources and enabling participation from public and private sector entities in
nuclear energy development
.
As of now, India's installed nuclear capacity stands at 8,780 MW spread across 24 reactors. This excludes the 100 MW Rajasthan Atomic Power Station (RAPS-1), which is under extended shutdown. An additional capacity of 13,600 MW—including the 500 MW Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) being implemented by BHAVINI—is currently under various stages of implementation.
On completion of the ongoing projects, the installed nuclear power capacity is expected to increase to 22,380 MW by 2031-32.
The Minister also noted that the government is promoting research and development in Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and advanced nuclear technologies to meet the 2047 target. The upcoming capacity addition will include both existing reactor designs and new technologies under development.

NCERT to create school module on Operation Sindoor for classes 3-12: Report

The NCERT is developing a special classroom module on Operation Sindoor to help students learn about India's defence strategy and diplomatic response, according to sources. The module will have two partsfirst for students from class 3 to 8 and another one for students from class 9 to 12. A source said that the special module prepared by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) will have 8 to 10 pages focussing on India's strategic military response to the Pahalgam terror attack. The aim is to make students understand how nations respond to terror threats and how defence, diplomacy, and coordination between ministries play a role in national security, the source said. Twenty-six men were gunned down in front of their family members in a deadly terror attack in in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam on April 22. India retaliated by targeting terror sites in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and Pakistan under Operation Sindoor, leading to a four-day conflict between the two countries. A special discussion on Operation Sindoor would also be taken up in the Lok Sabha from Monday after a weeklong virtual washout of Parliament proceedings. The opposition made a strong demand for a discussion on Operation Sindoor on the first day of the Monsoon session. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah and External Affairs S Jaishankar are likely to participate in the 16-hour debate that is expected to stretch over three days.

‘Malaise' has plagued PMs apprenticeship scheme: Congress

New Delhi, Jul 26 (PTI) The Congress on Saturday alleged that 'malaise" has plagued the PM's apprenticeship scheme, claiming that the hallmark of the Modi government has been to make grand announcements with 'zero" follow through. Congress general secretary in-charge of communications, Jairam Ramesh, cited a media report that claimed a decline in offers and acceptance rate in the PM Internship Scheme. 'We had previously flagged that the Prime Minister Internship Scheme (PMIS) – inspired by Congress' 2024 Lok Sabha campaign guarantee of 'Pehli Naukri Pakki', a year-long apprenticeship for all graduates and diploma-bearers – is being botched by a government with no administrative talent," Ramesh alleged in a post on X. In May, Ramesh claimed that Modi government's flagship PMIS launched in October 2024 was off to a 'stuttering start" with a low turnout and high attrition. 'It now emerges that the same malaise continues to plague this scheme many months on – 1.18 lakh internship opportunities were opened through PMIS in round two, but only 71,458 offers were made. This is a drop of 13 per cent compared to round one when 82,077 roles were on offer," Ramesh claimed. Till July 17, he further claimed, just 22,584 of the 71,458 offers were accepted by the candidates – less than the 28,000 students who accepted the internship in round one. 'In round one, only 8,725 (7 per cent) of the 28,000 students who accepted the internship offers actually joined the company they were placed at. We are yet to find out how many joined the internship in this round," Ramesh said. 'The funds allocated under this scheme remain constantly under-utilised and the internships actually completed under this programme are minimal – a far cry from the government's stated goal of 1 crore internships in the next five years," the Congress leader added. Ramesh also claimed that the UPA government launched and successfully implemented some of the most complex and elaborate government programmes in the world – the MGNREGA, the Food Security Bill, and Right to Education. 'This government's hallmark has been to make grand announcements with zero follow through – simply because it runs on the whims and fancies of one man," he alleged.
