Asian Athletics meet: Malaysia won't return home empty-handed
He said that this is based on the performances of the athletes bound for the championships and the presence of discus thrower Muhammad Irfan Shamsuddin, who won a medal in the previous edition two years ago.
'That is my opinion (that we won't return empty-handed). Based on the achievements of some of our athletes, they have won medals before, like Irfan has won a silver and a bronze.
'So, we hope all those competing there (in Gumi) will give their best,' he told reporters when met at the flag handing-over ceremony to the national team who will be competing in Gumi.
Malaysia will be sending 29 athletes to Gumi, comprising 18 men and 11 women.
In the 2023 Asian Athletics Championships in Bangkok, Malaysia won a bronze medal through Muhammad Irfan, who hurled the discus to a distance of 59.63 metres.

KUALA LUMPUR: Is track queen Shereen Samson Vallabouy set to represent Malaysia at the World Championships in Tokyo from Sept 13-23? Malaysia Athletics (MA) had earlier confirmed she would be granted a wild card by World Athletics. However, her mother and former national athlete, Josephine Mary, has claimed the matter is far from settled. "MA will decide one month before the world meet on the wild card, and it will depend on current form," said Josephine. She revealed Shereen has shifted her focus to the 100m event instead of the 400m since competing at the Asian Championships in South Korea in May. At that meet, Shereen, who won bronze in the 400m at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games with a time of 52.58s, was battling a fever and could only manage 54.80 in her heat, failing to make the final. Shereen holds the national record of 51.79 for the 400m. The qualifying mark for the World Championships is 50.72. Despite the setback, the Florida-based 27-year-old has bounced back in style. Trained by Derrick White, she clocked a season's best of 11.72 to win the 100m at the JAC Final Countdown meet in Florida, on July 26. Her personal best in the event is 11.61. "She was advised to tone down her endurance work and focus on speed to allow full recovery," said Josephine. "She's concentrating on the 100m first and will gradually return to the 400m. It was encouraging to see her win the 100m last week."

Azeem dashes into 100m semis but Thai ace sets pace at University Games
BOCHUM (Germany)" National sprint ace Mohd Azeem Fahmi breezed into the men's 100m semi-finals at the Rhine-Ruhr World University Games (WUG) at Lohrheidestadion on Monday (July 21). Competing in the seventh heat of the first round under rainy and windy conditions, Azeem stayed composed and crossed the line first in 10.57s, ahead of South Korea's Joeljin Nwamadi (10.61s) and Canada's Nikolaos Dowhos (10.72s). The Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games bronze medallist was the only Malaysian to advance after teammate Aliff Iman Mohd Fahmi finished fifth in heat five with a time of 11.09s. Azeem, who studies at Auburn University in the United States and holds the national record of 10.09s, is hoping for a strong finish. "Actually, I conserved energy because I know there are two rounds next (semi-final and the final). My goal was just to finish the race uninjured," said the 22-year-old. "Alhamdulillah, it went well. Now, I just need to stay focused and maintain the right mindset. The weather disrupted things a bit, but that's part of the game - no excuses," he added.
