More firms from Tamil Nadu foray into warehousing space

The Hindu07-05-2025
Tamil Nadu's warehousing industry is witnessing rapid growth, drawing significant attention from leading real estate developers and corporate houses. Increasing demand for storage and logistics space is encouraging more businesses to venture into this sector.
Beyond Chennai, tier-2 and tier-3 towns are also experiencing rising interest in warehousing facilities. And recognising this burgeoning potential, the Tamil Nadu government has announced plans to introduce a dedicated Warehousing Policy, aimed at fostering infrastructure development and attracting investment in the sector.
Chennai-based DRA is entering the Grade A warehousing and industrial development space with a focused strategy anchored in Chennai. 'Our first project is coming up in Mappedu, a key logistics node near the upcoming dry port and well-connected to the Chennai–Bangalore Industrial Corridor and Chennai and Ennore Ports. Spread across 12 acres, this project will deliver 3 lakh sq.ft of high-quality warehousing infrastructure, with an investment of ₹100 crore,' said Ranjeeth Rathod, Managing Director of DRA. 'We aim to develop 1.5 million sq.ft of warehousing space in Chennai by 2028,' he added.
A well-established corporate firm from Chennai, with a presence spanning several decades, has announced plans to diversify into the warehousing sector. Armed with a valuable land parcel, the company is attracted by the growing demand, particularly from the electronics industry in the Sriperumbudur belt, which has generated numerous inquiries, a top head from the company said requesting not to reveal the name until the firm completes approval procedures.
'Many of the leading developer and funds are currently engaged in Tamil Nadu's warehousing market. We have been seeing an increasing trend of corporates venturing into the warehousing sector. The reason is that Tamil Nadu has been a manufacturing base and many corporates historically having expertise in manufacturing. Many of these groups are now exploring Logistics and Industrial Park Development,' Jerry Kingsley, Head, Value and Risk Advisory India and City Lead - Capital Markets, Chennai, said.
According to Vimal Nadar, National Director and Head, Research, Colliers India, the demand for Grade A industrial and warehousing spaces has been gaining traction in Tamil Nadu, especially in Chennai and other major cities such as Hosur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Thoothukudi and Coimbatore. 'Since 2021, Chennai has witnessed nearly 20 million sq.ft of leasing activity, primarily driven by third-party logistics players and engineering firms. Grade A space uptake in the city was particularly impressive during the first quarter of 2025 at 2 million sq.ft, almost thrice of the demand in the preceding quarter,' he added.
Trends in warehousing
Firms like TVS ILP, which has been into this space for a long time, say that Tamil Nadu's warehousing sector is evolving rapidly—from conventional godowns to Grade A, compliance-led infrastructure.
Arul Murugan, Head – Projects, TVS ILP, explained: 'What's interesting is the growing demand for plug-and-play facilities with built-in automation support, especially from sectors like EV manufacturing and electronics. Another major trend is the decentralization of supply chains.' With Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities becoming consumption engines, brands are looking for facilities closer to these markets, he added.
Tamil Nadu has been a core market for TVS ILP with eight industrial and logistics parks spanning up to 7 million sq. ft. across Chennai, Hosur, Coimbatore, and Madurai. Each of these locations have been chosen for their proximity to industrial hubs and connectivity to nearest ports, airports, highways, railways, and industrial corridors offering seamless logistics and reduced transit time.
'For instance, our three facilities in Hosur alone contribute to over 2.8 million sq.ft of warehousing space, supporting a strong base of automotive and electronics clients. In Chennai, our parks in Oragadam, Sriperumbudur, Kancheepuram and Red Hills serve both manufacturing and urban consumption zones. Coimbatore and Madurai are fast emerging as regional distribution centres, especially for FMCG and quick commerce,' Mr.Murugan said.

Satellite images show Iran begins excavation at Fordow site after US airstrikes

Iran has deployed construction equipment and started excavation activity at its Fordow uranium enrichment facility following recent US airstrikes, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing imagery collected by Maxar captured over the weekend by Maxar Technologies reveal a newly constructed access road leading up to the mountain housing the underground Fordow complex. The images also show several construction vehicles, including an excavator and a mobile crane, positioned near two ventilation shafts believed to have been struck by US bunker-buster bombs on June the Wall Street Journal, the Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS) assessed that the excavator is likely preparing staging areas for downhole inspections, possibly to lower personnel or equipment into bomb impact points to assess the structural damage. ISIS president David Albright noted that Maxar's imagery shows preparations for inspection at two specific impact zones, with one site already having a crane in place. He further explained in a social media post that terrain instability at the second site could require a larger crane to safely conduct activity at the MOP impact points of the underground Fordow Enrichment Plant observed in satellite imagery taken by @Maxar yesterday and today indicate preparations for downhole damage assessment and possible downhole entry of cameras and/or personnel. According to US officials, B-2 bombers dropped more than a dozen Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP) bombs, aimed specifically at the ventilation shafts at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi said that the US strikes have not rendered Iran's nuclear program inoperable. Contrary to US claims of having set Iran's ambitions back by decades, Grossi warned that Tehran could resume high-level uranium enrichment "within months" if it chose assessment aligns with early findings from the Pentagon's Defence Intelligence Agency, which concluded that the strikes likely delayed, but did not destroy, the core infrastructure of Iran's nuclear program.- EndsTune InMust Watch

The US-China dispute over fentanyl drug & why Japan is caught in the crossfire

Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid, is a major driver of the US opioid crisis, contributing to tens of thousands of overdose deaths annually. The US-China fentanyl conflict stems from allegations that Beijing insufficiently regulates exports of precursor chemicals for fentanyl, with US officials claiming Chinese firms knowingly sell these precursors to drug cartels. He emphasised that the issue will not 'impact Japan-US relations or trade talks'. New Delhi: Japan's Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya has dismissed a report linking Japan to trafficking of fentanyl to the US amid ongoing tensions between Beijing and Washington over the fentanyl crisis. A Japan-based news platform, Nikkei Asia, in a June report, raised concerns about Firsky KK, a company registered in the Japanese city of Nagoya, allegedly linked to a Chinese trafficking network. The report suggests that fentanyl precursors were likely shipped through this base to the US. However, at a press conference on 27 June, 2025, Takeshi Iwaya dismissed the Nikkei report's implications, stating, 'Japan will never tolerate the manufacture, sale, possession, use, or unauthorised import and export of illegal drugs, including synthetic drugs.' He added, 'At this stage, I do not think this will have any impact on Japan-US relations or talks.' Japan's Finance Minister Katsunobu Kato similarly denied any significant connection to fentanyl trafficking, stating, 'No fentanyl has been seized at Japan's borders in the 6 years through 2024.' Kato clarified that this includes both finished fentanyl and precursor chemicals. According to the Nikkei report, Firsky KK, registered by Chinese national Xia Fengzhi, was linked to Hubei Amarvel Biotech, a Wuhan-based chemical producer flagged by US authorities in 2023 and January 2025 for the production of fentanyl precursors. A New York federal court convicted two of Hubei's executives in January 2025 for conspiring to smuggle fentanyl precursors into the US. The indictment revealed that Hubei advertised and sold precursor chemicals, disguising shipments as legal products, such as dog food, nuts, or motor oil. Inside US indictment of 2 Surat firms US response On 26 June, US Ambassador to Japan George Glass posted on X, accusing the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) of deliberately fueling the fentanyl crisis and emphasising the need for international cooperation to curb the trafficking of fentanyl and its precursor chemicals from China. The post suggested collaboration with Japan to halt the trans-shipment of these precursors to protect both nations. In response, Chinese Ambassador to Japan Wu Jianghao defended his country's stance Friday, stating that China maintains the world's 'strictest rules' and the 'largest number of controlled substances'. Wu questioned the US approach, asking, 'If the US cares about the fentanyl problem, why doesn't it formally regulate all fentanyl-like substances?' The Trump administration imposed a 20 percent tariff specifically to address the fentanyl crisis, alongside other tariffs, including a 125 percent reciprocal tariff and tariffs ranging from 7.5 percent to 100 percent on Chinese imports. The total tariff rate on China reached 145 percent in some cases due to retaliatory measures. On 2 April, Trump announced a 24 percent 'reciprocal' tariff on Japanese goods—paused for 90 days to allow negotiations—alongside a baseline 10 percent tariff and a 25 percent tariff on automobiles and other goods that have remained in place. Expressing his frustration at the difficulty of penetrating Japan's auto market, Trump said in a Fox Business interview aired Sunday, 'We give Japan no cars. They won't take our cars, and yet we take millions and millions of their cars into the United States. It's not fair. And I explained that to Japan, and they understood it. And we have a big deficit with Japan, and they understand that, too.' Japanese trade envoy Ryosei Akazawa has been making frequent trips to Washington, pushing for the removal of all tariffs, including on cars. After Trump's Friday interview, Akazawa posted on X early Monday (Tokyo time) that both sides had agreed to meet again, indicating it was time for more trade negotiations. Dismantle faulty AI traffic signal at Merces, PWD told

Panaji: The PWD has been directed to dismantle a wrongly positioned and defunct traffic signal near Merces junction by July 4, following sharp criticism at the North Goa District Road Safety Committee meeting held on Monday. The signal, part of a much-hyped AI-based traffic management system launched in March 2023 by Beltech AI Pvt Ltd, caused confusion among motorists due to its incorrect placement and months of non-functioning. Monday's action comes after the additional collector-I rejected the PWD's proposal to delay removal until fresh tender approvals were secured. Sources said the initial plan was to replace the signal under a new tender, but growing complaints forced the department's hand. 'Some motorists even threatened to file a complaint under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, for 'deficiency of service',' sources said. The district magistrate's office first flagged the issue this March, instructing the PWD to remove the non-functional signal that was out of order for over three months at the time, saying it 'will not serve any purpose'. Launched in March 2023, the AI traffic signal system was part of a pilot project to improve road safety through AI-enabled surveillance, automatic detection of traffic violations, challan generation, and traffic pattern analysis. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo The initiative showed early signs of success — speeding violations dropped sharply from 5,265 in June 2023 to 1,891 by May 2024. Between June 1 and Dec 31, 2023, the system helped the traffic cell and transport department collect around Rs 2.2 crore in fines. From Jan to May 31, 2024, an additional Rs 48.6 lakh was collected, taking the total revenue generated to about Rs 2.7 crore. Despite its promising start, the system faced operational hiccups. A technical glitch in Feb and March 2024 halted its functioning, while the defunct signal near Merces emerged as a prominent irritant for motorists navigating the busy junction.
