All the Details Behind Alexander Skarsgård's BDSM-Inspired Cannes Looks

Yahoo23-05-2025
This year's Cannes Film Festival organizers may have banned the infamous naked dress, but they didn't say anything about BDSM-themed dressing—for men, at least. Ironically, while the dress code has devoted its attention to restricting women's attire on the red carpet, Alexander Skarsgård's kinky thigh-high boots and mismatched sequin suit have bent the rules of propriety in a way that feels humorous, yet irreverent.
The Swedish actor is currently at the festival promoting his upcoming movie, Pillion, where he plays Ray, the handsome leader of a queer biker club who takes on Colin (played by Harry Melling) as his sexual submissive. The film is already a festival favorite, receiving a warm seven-minute standing ovation. So why not lean into the character and promote it even more?
If anything, themed dressing and red carpet Easter eggs have become the norm thanks to stylist-celeb power duos like Zendaya and Law Roach. From dressing Zendaya in archival cyborg-like Givenchy by Alexander McQueen for the Dune: Part 2 press tour to a custom tennis-printed Loewe dress for a Challengers premiere, every photo call has become an opportunity for subliminal messaging. Others have pushed the boundaries even further, going full method, like Timothée Chalamet who attended the New York premiere of A Complete Unknown dressed in a perfect recreation of a Bob Dylan outfit from 2003, blonde swooping hair and all. Skarsgård isn't a stranger to pushing the style envelope or channeling his roles through gimmicky fashion either. When promoting his film Infinity Pool, the actor wore a leather leash around his neck to walk the carpet. Albeit, it was a jarring sight for the context, but it directly referenced a scene from the movie and felt appropriately authentic to the celebrity's eccentric demeanor.
At the Cannes photo call for Pillion's screening, the actor sported Loewe leather trousers paired with a thrifted BDSM graphic T-shirt depicting a faceless leather boot stepping on a man's open mouth—he is playing Colin's 'dom' after all. Later, on the red carpet, Skårsgard donned a full look from Saint Laurent's spring 2025 menswear collection, including the uniquely sensual over-the-knee leather boots (which have also been seen on Pedro Pascal).
The sartorial madness didn't stop there. For the premiere of Eagles of the Republic, the actor stepped out in what could only be described as a Frankenstein-like suit. All styled by Harry Lambert, Skarsgård wore a gray striped Magliano jacket, oversized pink bow tie, and contrasting cobalt sequin trousers from Bianca Saunders. Daring? Yes. More so than a leather leash at a movie premiere? Not quite. Sometimes an ensemble simply comes along that is so perfectly sacrilegious that you can't help but smile and accept the look as nothing less than a balanced work of art.
Skarsgård might not directly be disobeying the Cannes dress code—he's adhered to wearing evening dress or a bow tie (as per the official guidelines) for the red carpet—but he's definitely toeing the line, not unlike his character Ray, and perhaps is setting the standard for others to do so too.

Jake Larson, WWII veteran turned TikTok's 'Papa Jake,' dies at 102, granddaughter announces

Jake Larson, a World War II veteran who amassed more than 1.2 million followers on TikTok, has died at the age of 102, his granddaughter announced on social media. Known affectionately online as "Papa Jake," Larson helped plan the D-Day invasion and stormed Omaha Beach in Normandy, France. He became an unlikely social media star when his granddaughter started a TikTok account for him, which was followed by his autobiography. "Our beloved Papa Jake has passed away on July 17th at 102 years young. Please know, he went peacefully and was even cracking jokes til the very end," his granddaughter, McKaela Larson, wrote on Instagram. "At this time, the family and I ask for some privacy as we process this loss." "I am so thankful to have shared my Papa Jake with you all. You meant the world to him. When the time is right, I will continue to share Papa Jake's stories and keep his memory alive," she added. "We appreciate all the kind words and posts. As Papa would say, love you all the mostest." Born on Dec. 20, 1922, in Owatonna, Minnesota, Larson grew up on a farm without electricity or running water during the Great Depression. He enlisted in the National Guard in 1938 at age 15, lying about his age, according to the Best Defense Foundation. His unit was transferred to federal service in 1941 following Japan's surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. In January 1942, he was sent overseas and was stationed in Northern Ireland. He became operations sergeant and assembled the planning books for Operation Overlord, the invasion of Normandy. Larson was among the Allied troops who stormed the Normandy shore on D-Day, June 6, 1944, surviving machine-gun fire when he landed on Omaha Beach. He made it unhurt to the bluffs that overlook the beach, then studded with German gun emplacements that mowed down American soldiers. After D-Day, he fought on through the Battle of the Bulge. He and his sweetheart, Lola, later settled in California, where they raised a family after the war. In 2020, his granddaughter started a TikTok account, "storytimewithpapajake," through which he has amassed online fame. He authored an autobiography in 2021 titled "The Luckiest Man in the World: Stories from the life of Papa Jake." Larson returned to Normandy for several D-Day anniversary and memorial celebrations in recent years. "We are the lucky ones," Larson told The Associated Press at the 81st anniversary of D-Day in June, speaking amid the immaculate rows of graves at the American cemetery overlooking Omaha Beach. "They had no family. We are their family. We have the responsibility to honor these guys who gave us a chance to be alive." Larson earlier this month shared a message with Fox News Digital on Independence Day about the importance of freedom. "God bless all those guys that served, and they served the ultimate," Larson told Fox News Digital from his home in Lafayette, Calif., on the Fourth of July. "Their souls are looking down at me now." "Every time I talk, I like to remind people those guys upstairs looking down at us, they're the heroes… None of us every thought we'd be heroes." Tributes from the Zac Brown Brand, Unsubscribe Podcast and podcaster and retired Navy officer, Jacko Willink, have been shared to Larson's Instagram account's stories.

Performer unfurls Palestinian flag on Royal Opera House stage

A cast member at the Royal Opera House has unfurled a Palestinian flag on stage during the curtain call of Saturday's performance. Video shows a brief scuffle as an official at the London venue tries unsuccessfully to stop the protest, with the performer refusing to let go of the large flag. It came on the closing night of Il trovatore, a four-act opera by Giuseppe Verdi. The Royal Opera House said the protest was "completely inappropriate for a curtain call". A spokesperson said: "The display of the flag was spontaneous and unauthorised action by the artist. "It was not approved by the Royal Ballet and Opera and is not in line with our commitment to political impartiality." One cast member standing at the top of the stage is seen in videos of the incident silently displaying a large Palestinian flag, at one point shaking it gently. While the audience continues to applaud the performance, a man from the stage wings is seen attempting to wrestle the flag away from the cast member but they resist and hold on to it for the remainder of the curtain call. Other officials stood in the wings can then be seen shouting messages to the cast member. One member of the audience posted on X: "Extraordinary scenes at the Royal Opera House tonight. "During the curtain call for Il trovatore one of the background artists came on stage waving a Palestine flag. "Just stood there, no bowing or shouting. Someone off stage kept trying to take it off him. Incredible." The identity of the cast member is unclear, but Il trovatore has now finished its 11-night run at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. The protest comes as the war between Israel and Gaza continues, with a ceasefire yet to be struck.

Margot Robbie and Tom Ackerley Look Loved-Up on Balcony in Italy

Margot Robbie and her man Tom Ackerley are living it up in one of the most romantic countries in the world ... saying "ciao" to a lovely new day while cuddling up on their Italian balcony. The actor and her producer husband were spotted in Naples Friday ... with Margot sipping on what looks like water -- and Tom drinking in Margot's beauty, wrapping his arms around her midriff and giving her a peck on her head. Margot's looking elegant in a flower ensemble that shows off her long legs ... while Ackerley's keeping it casual in a loose-fitting button-down and a very nice watch. The two are enjoying a European vacation ... 'cause they were just in London a couple of days ago -- where MR was spotted walking through a restaurant. It's another break for the star -- who welcomed her first child into the world last year -- and who has kept busy with a couple new projects recently, including "Wuthering Heights" and "A Big Bold Beautiful Journey." Both movies -- the former based on the famed 19th-century novel of the same name and the latter featuring Colin Farrell and Phoebe Waller-Bridge -- are in post-production, according to MR's IMDb. Margot's back to saying a quick "arrivederci" to the film industry, it seems ... keeping busy with her better half instead! Solve the daily Crossword
