Coast Guard gets pollution control vessel to counter oil spills
The Ministry of Defence said that with 72% indigenous components, the project boosts national capability, jobs, and skills through local industry and MSME involvement. Fitted with advanced response gear, the vessels enhance ICG's response to oil spills in the Exclusive Economic Zone.
The ship is equipped with two side-sweeping arms capable of collecting oil spills, as well as a modern radar system for detecting oil slicks. The vessel is engineered to recover oil across the full viscosity spectrum, pump in contaminated water, analyse and separate pollutants, and store recovered oil in dedicated onboard tanks.
Director General of ICG Paramesh Sivamani highlighted the importance of PCVs in the maritime domain. He appreciated the efforts of GSL and the industry in ensuring that major shipbuilding requirements of the ICG are fulfilled indigenously.
Chairman and managing director of GSL, Brajesh Kumar Upadhyay, underscored the critical importance of this platform in advancing India's maritime environmental preparedness.
The ceremony was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Defence, ICG and GSL.
The first PCV was launched on August 29 last year.

The Girder Laying and Commencement of Erection ceremony took place on Wednesday (30 July) at Chowgule and Company Pvt. Ltd. in Goa. The ACVs, based on proven Griffon Hoverwork designs, are being developed using Indian expertise to support a range of coastal security operations. Once inducted, these hovercrafts will enhance speed, tactical flexibility, and shallow-water operability—allowing quick response for patrolling, interdiction, and search and rescue missions along India's vast coastline. The project follows a contract signed with the Ministry of Defence on 24 October 2024 for six ACVs, underlining ICG's commitment to operational self-reliance as part of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

Indian Coast Guard and UAE National Guard Command Sign Landmark MoU on Maritime Security and Safety Cooperation
New Delhi, 30 Jul 25: In a significant stride towards strengthening maritime cooperation between India and the United Arab Emirates, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and the United Arab Emirates National Guard Command (UAE NGC) entered into a collaborative framework through the signing of a Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS)-approved Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Maritime Security and Safety Cooperation. This milestone reflects a growing convergence in maritime interests and marks a major step forward in ICG's maritime diplomacy and operational outreach. The MoU was signed during the 13th Joint Defence Cooperation Committee (JDCC) meeting between India and the UAE by Director General Paramesh Sivamani, AVSM, PTM, TM, Director General Indian Coast Guard, and Brigadier Staff Khalid Obaid Thani Al Shamsi, Commander of the Coast Guard Group, UAE on 30 July 2025 at New Delhi. It is significant to note that, the MoU —10th such agreement with Coast Guard agencies of Friendly Foreign Countries (FFCs) has been prepared so as to enhance the professional linkage between the two Coast Guards across core Coast Guard functions, including Maritime Search & Rescue (M-SAR), combating transnational maritime crimes, Maritime Law Enforcement (MLE), Marine Pollution Response (MPR) and Joint capacity building. These efforts are reflective of the shared commitment of both nations to strengthen institutional linkages and promote collaborative engagements for maritime safety and security. Anchored in the Government of India's vision of SAGAR – Security and Growth for All in the Region – the implementation of this MoU is expected to significantly enhance bilateral maritime cooperation and contribute to a safe, secure, and sustainable maritime environment in the region. 4.
