Delhi: Year after woman reports husband as missing, she & partner held for murder

Indian Express3 days ago
On July 5, last year, Pritam Prakash from Outer North Delhi's Alipur, was murdered and his body dumped in a drain near Agwanpur village at Ganaur district in Haryana's Sonipat. Fifteen days later, his wife Soniya (34) filed a missing complaint at Alipur police station, claiming that Pritam had gone missing during the night of July 5.
What began as a probe into a missing person's complaint unraveled into a calculated plot involving deception, betrayal, and a staged disappearance, eventually leading to Soniya and her partner Rohit's (28) arrests on Friday for Pritam's murder, police said on Saturday.
The motive behind the murder – a toxic marriage, years of domestic abuse, and the desire to start a new life together.
The case took a turn when Delhi Police, conducting routine checks on absconding criminals, noticed that Pritam had been off the grid for too long. In fact, he had been missing for so long that he had been declared a Proclaimed Offender in one of the cases lodged against him. It was then, police said, that they discovered the missing person complaint filed by Soniya.
When they attempted to trace Pritam's phone, the police realised that it was active in Jaji village of Sonipat. A raid was conducted but in place of Pritam, the police found Rohit, in possession of the phone.
Police said Rohit first attempted to obfuscate the truth by saying that he had bought the phone from a stranger. When questioned further, he cracked.
He allegedly admitted to being in a relationship with Soniya and claimed that she had given him the phone to dispose of after Pritam's murder.
Subsequently, police said, Soniya was arrested.
She allegedly admitted that she hired her sister's brother-in-law, Vijay, as a contract killer to murder Pritam for a price of Rs 1 lakh.
DCP (Crime) Harsh Indora said, 'Soniya married Pritam Prakash when she was 16 years old… It was a love marriage. But Pritam was a drug addict and often used to beat her up. They frequently fought over it. Pritam had been to jail many times for illegal possession of weapons, robbery, theft, and kidnapping, among others… because of this, the atmosphere at home was not pleasant.' He added that in 2023-24, Soniya became friends with Rohit, who used to drive a taxi in Delhi, over social media.
The police said that on July 2, last year, after a fight with Pritam, Soniya left for her sister's house in Ganaur in Rohit's cab. During the car ride, she allegedly asked Rohit to kill Pritam. But when Rohit asked for Rs 6 lakh, she dropped the idea, said police.
Three days later, Pritam came to Ganaur to pick up Soniya. There, the couple fought again and Pritam insulted her, said police. Incensed, Soniya allegedly decided to murder Pritam.
Police said she then approached Vijay. 'At Soniya and Vijay's request, Pritam agreed to stay back in Ganaur… She went to sleep on the terrace… After some time, she heard Pritam's screams. When she woke up in the morning, she saw that Pritam was not at home,' said the DCP.
The following day, Soniya left for home with Pritam's autorickshaw, which she later sold to pay Vijay Rs 1 lakh and repay
some loans.
Police said that Pritam's body, then unidentified, was discovered by the Sonipat police on July 10. Ten days later, Soniya filed a missing person complaint.
This June, before Soniya and Rohit's arrest, Vijay was arrested in a theft case.

Man injured as iron rod from metro bridge under construction falls on autorickshaw

A 20-year-old man sustained critical head injuries on Tuesday when a long iron rod from an under-construction Metro Line 5 bridge fell on an autorickshaw he was travelling in Bhiwandi. The accident happened at around 2 pm at Vitthal Nagar, where the civil work for the Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan Metro line is being carried out. As per the police and onlookers, a tie rod of about 7 to 8 feet long and 20 mm in diameter came crashing down straight from the raised structure onto the passing autorickshaw. The rod came through the autorickshaw's roof and struck passenger Sonu Ali on the head. The local residents rushed Ali, who became unconscious, to a hospital where he is being treated. Bhiwandi's Bhoiwada Police are investigating the incident to determine whether negligence led to the mishap. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the developing authority of Metro Line 5, imposed a fine Rs 50 lakh on civil contractor Afcons and Rs 5 lakh penalty on general consultant Systra-CEG-Systra India for supervisory deficiencies. Expressing regret over the incident, the MMRDA said in a statement, 'A tie rod, installed as part of the temporary support system to deck slab structure two months ago, unexpectedly fell onto an autorickshaw. A passenger suffered a head injury as a result.' 'MMRDA has ordered Afcons to cover all the medical costs and extend due support to the affected person,' an official said. The development authority has also set up an independent panel headed by the Chief Safety Manager of AICA, the overall consultant for Metro Line 2B, to probe the cause of the accident. A similar accident had happened in 2021 when five people were injured after an iron structure collapsed at Anjurphata during pillar construction for Metro Line 5.

SC cancels bail granted to DHFL promoter in loan scam case, directs him to surrender in two weeks

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday cancelled bail granted to former DHFL promoter Dheeraj Wadhawan in the multi-crore bank loan scam case. A bench of Justices Sanjay Kumar and Satish Chandra Sharma passed the order after perusing the report filed by a medical board and directed Wadhawan to surrender within two weeks. The Delhi High Court on September 9, 2024 granted him bail on medical grounds saying Wadhawan fell within the parameters of a "sick person". The order came on an appeal filed by the CBI appeal against the high court order. Additional Solicitor General S V Raju, representing the agency, had earlier said said Wadhawan suffered from no serious medical ailments and huge amounts of money were siphoned off in the case. The Wadhawan brothers -- Kapil and Dheeraj-- were arrested in this case in July 2022. The agency filed a chargesheet in October 2022 following which a court took its cognisance. The FIR was registered on a complaint made by the Union Bank of India , which alleged DHFL, the housing finance company's then chairman-cum-managing director Kapil Wadhawan , then director Dheeraj Wadhawan and other accused entered into a criminal conspiracy to cheat the consortium of 17 banks led by the Union Bank of India, and in pursuance of the criminal conspiracy, the accused and others induced the consortium to sanction huge loans aggregating Rs 42,871.42 crore. Much of the amount was allegedly siphoned off and misappropriated by alleged falsification of the books of the DHFL and dishonest default in repayment of legitimate dues of the consortium banks, the CBI claimed.
