KL police seek Meta's help in actor defamation case

KUALA LUMPUR: City police will work with Meta Platforms Inc. to identify the individual behind a defamatory and provocative post targeting a popular male actor and singer. Acting Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad said the identity of the social media account owner remains unknown. "I have instructed our investigating officers to contact Meta Platforms Inc. in Singapore to help trace the individual behind the Threads account. "We will also seek assistance from the Cyber Division of the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) to trace the IP address of the account owner," he said when met at the City police headquarters today. He said investigations were still ongoing, and statements have been recorded from four witnesses. It was reported on July 21 that police received a report from a local actor and singer over an alleged defamatory and provocative social media post made on the 'Threads' platform. The post is claimed to have damaged the complainant's reputation. The report was lodged at 4.12pm on July 18, involving a post by a social media account that allegedly contained slanderous, provocative, and seditious elements. Usuf was quoted as saying the post was made publicly and is believed to have the potential to tarnish the complainant's image and reputation. The case is being investigated under Section 500 of the Penal Code for defamation and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which covers the misuse of network facilities. Those convicted under Section 500 could be liable for a maximum of two years' jail, a fine, or both. Section 233 stipulates a maximum fine of RM500,000 or two years' jail or both if found guilty, as well as a further fine of RM5,000 for each day the offence continues after conviction. Usuf also confirmed that the case was not related to the ongoing investigation involving local artiste Shila Amzah.

[UPDATED] MACC duo, ex-colleague acquitted of robbing Chinese businessman

KUALA LUMPUR: Two Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers and a former colleague were acquitted and discharged of robbing a Chinese businessman in 2021. Sessions Court judge Izralizam Sanusi made the ruling after finding that the prosecution had failed to establish a prima facie case against MACC officers Muhamad Haffiz Mohd Radzi, 35, and Mohd Fahmee Mohamad Nor, 43, along with former officer Azwan Asli, 40, at the close of the prosecution's case. The accused had allegedly robbed Kun Gao of his belongings, which were RM952,690 in cash, 1,225 Chinese Yuan, a silver baggage and a black LV bag at Ritz Carlton Residence, Jalan Ampang at about noon on Dec 10, 2021. The trio exhaled deeply, their faces breaking into relieved smiles as the judge delivered the ruling. However, not a single family member was seen in court throughout the proceedings today. In his brief decision, Izralizam said the prosecution failed to prove and establish the elements of robbery in the transaction. He said the police report lodged by the victim, who was the prosecution's first witness (PW1), stated that the presence of the three men at his residence was to initiate an investigation into alleged money laundering offences. "PW1 said he felt threatened because all three accused informed him that he could be arrested if he failed to cooperate with the investigation. "However, the court finds that this does not amount to wrongful restraint if it was done in their capacity as MACC officers. "The victim's own testimony showed he did not appear to be fearful of the trio during the incident, as he maintained he had committed no offence. "There is no evidence that the victim was threatened with a firearm by the three men, although he claimed that one of them had a gun in his backpack," he said. He said the alleged presence of a firearm was never proven during the trial. On Dec 13, 2023, the accused pleaded not guilty to the offence which was allegedly committed at a condominium in Jalan Ampang at around noon on Dec 10, 2021. They were charged under Section 395 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of 20 years and whipping upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Nor Aisyah Mohd Zanyuin prosecuted, while the three accused were represented by lawyers Tan Sri Dzulkifli Ahmad and Azzizul Shariman Mat Yusoff. A total of 17 prosecution witnesses were called during the trial, which began in December 2024. In a related case, Gao, on May 21, this year, filed a lawsuit against politician A.M.A. Tinagaran, his wife J. Latha, MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, the trio and the government, accusing them of theft and extortion involving RM10 million. Tinagaran was appointed as PKR state deputy chairman in the Perak central leadership council for 2018-2021 and contested the Hulu Kinta state seat in the 2013 general election but lost to the Barisan Nasional candidate at that time. The plaintiff claimed Latha informed him that she could return all the plaintiff's belongings which were seized by the raiding team and requested to meet the former later for further discussion. The plaintiff claimed MACC failed to ensure that a proper, strict and binding standing order be issued to all MACC officers to prevent any form of abuse of power. He also claimed the government was vicariously liable for all actions of the said defendants. The plaintiff is seeking general, aggravated, punitive and exemplary damages.

Man arrested, RM17.8 million drugs seized in Kuala Lumpur raid

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have arrested a man and seized 439.7 kilogrammes of syabu and ketamine worth over RM17 million in a raid on a house in Sri Hartamas. The operation, conducted at 2.10 pm last Thursday, followed a month-long intelligence effort by Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department. Director Datuk Hussein Omar Khan confirmed the seizure as one of the largest this year. A search of the terrace house uncovered 224 packets of syabu weighing 234kg and 200 plastic packets of ketamine weighing 205.7kg. The total drug value was estimated at RM17.78 million. 'The 30-year-old suspect acted as a coordinator and transporter for the syndicate, earning RM6,500 to RM7,000 monthly,' Hussein said during a press conference at Kuala Lumpur police headquarters. Preliminary investigations revealed the rented house served as a storage facility before local distribution. 'All drugs were smuggled via land routes from a neighbouring country. The suspect received instructions to deliver them on demand,' he added. The man, with a prior weapons-related offence, tested negative for drug use. He has been remanded for six days under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. Police also seized two cars, three wristwatches, and jewellery worth RM93,350, bringing total confiscations to RM17.9 million. In a separate case, four individuals, including three Vietnamese nationals, were arrested in Taman Kuchai Entrepreneurs for distributing cannabis. Authorities found 42.3kg of cannabis flower in 91 plastic packets during the raid. 'The syndicate used the apartment as a storage site before local and international distribution,' Hussein said. The suspects, aged 26 to 30, were remanded for seven days under the same act. - Bernama
