
‘I gambled my last £10k to set up my company, and sold it for £4.1bn'
Running rabbit kennels, selling conkers, becoming a magician: Richard Harpin's entrepreneurial prowess began in primary school, with each path yielding its own particular charm. 'I don't think I ever had a long-term plan other than: I do want to one day run my own proper business,' the 60-year-old reflects. 'I'm looking for that big idea.'
It's fair to say that he got there in the end (and then some), selling HomeServe, his home assistance service business, to a Canadian asset management firm for £4.1bn in 2023.
The sale has prompted the writing of his upcoming book, How to Make a Billion in Nine Steps. Part memoir, part business toolkit, it charts the wins and inevitable failures that made HomeServe a multi-billion pound British success story, and secured Harpin a spot on the Sunday Times Rich List with an estimated personal wealth of £700m.
Harpin never set out to make so much as £1m, he says. Born in Huddersfield and raised in Northumberland, business was just part of who he was. 'As a boy, I built businesses the way my school friends built Airfix kits,' he says. The most successful of these was a fly-tie fishing company he started in his teens, which had staff in Kenya and Newcastle, where Geordie housewives would package the goods. It gathered enough profit for a car and a 10pc deposit on his first house by the time he left university.
He later landed a graduate role at Procter & Gamble, working as a brand assistant for Fairy Liquid (the reason, he says, that his hands remain soft even now) – but doing a day job alone didn't cut it.
Harpin began shifting Christmas trees in pub car parks to make extra cash. Once other vendors who were paying rental rates realised he was selling his wares without such costs, however, they complained, and Harpin was left with a vast – and dying – inventory. 'I lost a couple of my selling sites and ended up with about 1,000 trees that I wasn't going to be able to sell, so I got up at 4am and sold them at the fruit and veg market every morning,' he says. 'I managed to get rid of every tree and worked so hard. [I] made no money that year, but [it was] a big learning point.'
Another would come a few years later. He had met Jeremy Middleton, who would become his business partner, at Procter & Gamble in the early 1980s, with the pair going on to start up a lettings agency, ironing service and decorating company along with a string of other ventures.
They egged each other on in search of the 'big idea' and undertaking the unusual strategy of attending prospective staff's homes to interview them, so they could eye up their kitchen table (with a view to choosing an employee based on one they wanted to work from).
Their first member of staff was hired on that basis; their weekly tête-à-têtes and meetings with prospective renters were held at that kitchen table, too.
Pivoting to property management gave Harpin his next step – a home repair and maintenance business, funded by his and Middleton's life savings. But trouble struck when FastFix (then renamed A1 FastFix, to get it to the top of the Yellow Pages) expanded.
They had secured investment from South Staffordshire Water. 'I thought that we'd get economies of scale and therefore the business would get to profit – it didn't,' Harpin says. 'The losses got bigger because it was the wrong model, so I became increasingly unconfident, and thinking: 'how am I going to find a way through this?''
The business lost half a million in its first year, leaving Harpin down to his last £10,000. Even Middleton told him: 'You've got to admit your life's dream of becoming a successful entrepreneur is over, you better go back and work for Procter & Gamble.'
He had other ideas. With that final chunk of cash, he devised a new company, inspired by the plumbing insurance cover he had seen offered by Sutton Waters, a water company in Surrey. He mailed an offer for an equivalent service to 1,000 of his customers, 38 of whom sent back a cheque for £50. 'That was the magic moment. I got on my desk in front of those 23 [staff] who thought they were going to lose their job,' he says. He told them: 'We made it.'
Harpin was convinced that if this take-up rate within 1,000 households could be replicated at scale across 100,000 households, the business could work millions of times over. By the end of the company's second year, it had more than 100,000 customers pumping turnover up to £3.67m, that first-year loss becoming a profit of £700,000. The following year, with an affinity partnership signed with Anglian Water, turnover had doubled, doubling again by the end of the 1997-98 financial year to £14m.
Harpin is loath to dwell on the negatives in his business past – which may well include the £30m fine HomeServe was issued by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in 2014 for mis-selling insurance policies and failing to properly investigate complaints. 'Mistakes are fuel,' he believes. 'I'm resilient and determined, and I knew that I'd find a way through because that was my life's dream, and nobody was going to stop me.' According to Harpin, 50pc of entrepreneurs are struck by their big idea later in life, while '50pc of entrepreneurs are born entrepreneurs, and that was definitely me'.
That hardwired drive explains why Harpin isn't sitting back and enjoying the spoils of his sale. He stayed on for two years as non-executive chairman of HomeServe (he says sacking himself as CEO was 'the best business decision I ever made'); has invested £150m of his own cash into different ventures – including a Yorkshire pub, and Checkatrade. He's also acquired a business magazine and podcast, written a 25-year business outline (HomeServe's chairman told him: 'I don't know of anybody else in the whole world that, after they've just sold the business, would have then written a career plan for the next 25 years'), and written the book.
He is also on a mission to double the number of large companies in the UK, which he believes is a vital step in stimulating the economy.
Taking his foot off the pedal is clearly not on the cards for Harpin, who was a major Conservative party donor until earlier this year (he'd given the party more than £3.5m since 2010; Rishi Sunak used Harpin's helicopter for campaign stops ahead of last year's election).
He will not be spending his days troubling local golf courses or seeking out 'sun-drenched tax exile,' but instead splits his time between homes in Marylebone and a property close to York, spending non-work hours on pursuits like half marathons and triathlons with his children, skiing, and going on a selection of bucket list holidays.
I ask Harpin what the word 'retirement' means to him. 'Death,' comes the response. 'The day that I die will be the day that I've retired.'

Ministers trying to drum up interest in Alexander Dennis orders, says Robison
Scottish ministers are working with bus operators to drum up interest for much-needed orders from Alexander Dennis Limited (ADL), the Finance Secretary has said. The bus manufacturer is currently consulting on proposals to close operations in Scotland and move to a single site in Yorkshire due to financial concerns, with 400 jobs potentially at risk. Appearing before MSPs last month, Alexander Dennis managing director Paul Davies said the decision was not a 'done deal', but the company would need to see a significant rise in bus orders – between 70 and 100 by the end of the year and 300-400 next year – to remain open. In a letter to Colin Smyth, the convener of Holyrood's Economy and Fair Work Committee, Finance Secretary Shona Robison said the Government is committed to looking at 'all viable options' and ministers are working with private bus companies. 'I agree about the importance of securing a short-term pipeline of orders,' she said. 'Please be assured that we are therefore liaising with commercial bus operators and local transport authorities to establish the current demand for double-deck buses in Scotland and are working alongside UK Government to identify demand in other parts of the UK. 'I am in full agreement with you about the importance of Alexander Dennis to Scotland and of retaining the jobs of the highly-skilled workers. 'That is why we are continuing to work at pace with Scottish Enterprise and UK Government, and alongside the company and trade unions, to explore all viable options to support ADL to retain bus manufacturing in Scotland.' Ms Robison also suggested ADL could be forced to pay back money it has been given by the Government's commercial arm Scottish Enterprise for skills and technological development, though it would be for the agency to decide how to proceed. The Finance Secretary also stressed the issues the Government faces due to UK-wide state aid regulations, which govern the level to which ministers can intervene in private businesses. She said the Subsidy Control Act does not allow for subsidies which enforce the use of domestically-made goods and services, which would hamper the Scottish Government's efforts to force bus firms to use Alexander Dennis. 'Scottish ministers and officials consistently make representation on the development of the subsidy control regime for the benefit of Scottish businesses,' she said. 'However, as this is a reserved matter, it is ultimately for UK Government to make the final decision on any changes to the regime.'

£66m returned to APP scam victims in first six months of rules going live
Some £66 million was returned to victims of authorised push payment (APP) scams in the first six months of a new reimbursement scheme going live, according to a regulator's figures. Rules requiring banks to reimburse people who have been tricked into transferring money to a fraudster were launched in October last year. Under the shake-up, banks must reimburse APP fraud victims, unless the customer has been grossly negligent. Figures released by the Payment Systems Regulator (PSR) showed that in the first six months of the new rules, 87% of money lost to APP scams in scope of the policy was returned to victims, equating to £66 million. Consumers reported around 109,000 claims, with 77,000 in scope for reimbursement. Nearly nine in 10 (86%) claims were closed within five business days. In the update on its website, the PSR said: 'The data shows positive outcomes for consumers in the first six months of our policy. 'Reimbursement rates were high, firms responded to claims promptly, and there was no indication of people being significantly less cautious.' Some £27.6 million was reimbursed in the first three months of the new rules, rising to £38.4 million in the following three-month period. A reimbursement limit of £85,000 applies under the rules, although banks can choose to go further than this and repay higher amounts. The new protections apply when a transfer is made to and from a UK bank account. They cover transactions made from October 7 2024 onwards and do not apply retrospectively. Previously, many bank customers relied on a voluntary code to get their money back. Concerns were raised that consumers faced a refund 'lottery'. Criminals will often pose as trusted institutions such as banks, companies or Government departments to persuade people to part with their cash, with scams becoming increasingly sophisticated. They may also use artificial intelligence (AI) and deepfake videos to make scams seem even more plausible. There are various reasons why an APP scam claim is not reimbursable under the policy, for example if it is a civil dispute, the PSR said. Around 3% of claims in the first six months of the new rules were rejected due to the consumer being deemed not to have taken enough caution. This equated to around 1,100 rejections in the first three months of the new rules being launched and 1,700 claims turned down in the following three months.

Trump's Turnberry faces logistical hurdles for British Open return
President Donald Trump is not getting a British Open to the Turnberry course he owns in the near future, an issue the R&A's new chief executive said Wednesday was more about transportation than politics. Turnberry is regarded as the most beautiful of the links on the Open rotation, set along the Ayrshire coast in Scotland across from the Ailsa Craig. It last hosted the Open in 2009, before Trump bought the resort. Mark Darbon, who took over at the R&A this year from Martin Slumbers, said Turnberry had not been taken off the list of potential British Open sites, but transportation and other issues had to be addressed. 'I think we've been extremely clear on our position in respect of Turnberry. We love the golf course but we've got some big logistical challenges there,' he said. 'You see the scale of their setup here and we've got some work to do on the road, rail and accommodation infrastructure around Turnberry.' Darbon said the R&A met with Eric Trump and other leaders of Trump Golf a few months ago and the talks had been constructive. 'I think they understand clearly where we're coming from. We talked through some of the challenges that we have so we've got a good dialogue with them,' he said. Slumbers had previously said the R&A would not be going to Turnberry until it was comfortable the topic would be about golf and not the owner. Turnberry has only hosted the British Open four times, first in 1977 with the famous 'Duel in the Sun' when Tom Watson beat Jack Nicklaus. But the Open is getting bigger, and the roads are limited getting to Turnberry. There has been speculation Trump, whose golf courses have never hosted a men's major, might ask the British government to intercede in getting the Open back to Turnberry. 'We have an ongoing dialogue with the UK government given that we're a major event that creates significant value into the UK economy,' Darbon said. "We've spoken to them specifically about Turnberry and I think they've made it clear that the decision around where we take our championship rests with us. 'I would find it difficult to predict whether there will be any discussion on The Open if the President is making a visit here.' Turnberry is not the only Scottish links being ignored by the R&A. Muirfield, located along the Firth of Forth east of Edinburgh, is reputed to be the purest of links courses. Its first Open was in 1892, and there have been 15 others, most recently in 2013 won by Phil Mickelson. Only St. Andrews has hosted more Opens than Muirfield. But it has not been back there since 2013 as the R&A has been geared toward taking golf's oldest championship to courses that can hold big crowds. It is expected 278,000 spectators will be at Royal Portrush this week, the second-largest behind St. Andrews. The last Open at Muirfield had 142,000 spectators. The Open will be at Royal Birkdale next year, and then St. Andrews in 2027. The site for 2028 has not been announced. Muirfield has never gone more than 11 years — except for interruptions from World War I and World War II — between Opens. 'We love the golf course at Muirfield. We're in a discussion with the venue right now,' Darbon said. "There's some things that we need to evolve at Muirfield — the practice ground in particular is a challenge for us with a modern Open and there's some work we need to do with the venue to facilitate some of the infrastructure that we require. 'But it's a good dialogue and we'd love to be back there in the future.' ___ AP golf:
