LIVE: Luxembourg v Ireland, international friendly

The 4210-06-2025
Hello, and welcome to tonight's liveblog.
Ireland may be 31 places above Luxembourg in the Fifa world rankings, however, it's not expected to be an easy game.
The so-called minnows infamously beat Stephen Kenny's Ireland in Dublin, and Sweden are among their more recent notable scalps.
Heimir Hallgrímsson's side will be confident, however.
They are three matches unbeaten following back-to-back wins over Bulgaria and last week's draw with Senegal in Dublin.
The Boys in Green were even a little unlucky not to beat the 19th-ranked team, as had VAR been in place, the visitors' late equaliser would likely have been ruled out for offside.

Referee body-cameras could feature at 2026 World Cup after green light from IFAB

Referee body-cameras could be used at next summer's World Cup after the game's lawmakers formally gave the green light to extend their use on Wednesday. The cameras were used at the Club World Cup in the United States, which finished earlier this month, and the directors of the International Football Association Board, which sets football's laws, have given their approval for other competitions around the world to follow suit. The aim of the cameras trial was to see whether it would enrich the viewing experience by providing footage from the referee's perspective. Pierluigi Collina, the chairman of FIFA's referees committee, hailed the success of the cameras and said the trial had gone "beyond expectations". It therefore seems extremely likely world football's governing body will want to use the cameras in its showpiece national-team tournament next summer. "We thought it would have been an interesting experience for TV viewers and we've received great comments," Collina told earlier this month. "We were asked, 'Why not in all the matches?' and even more, 'Why not in all sports?' "We had the possibility to see what the referee sees on the field of play. And this was not only for entertainment purposes, but also for coaching the referees (and) to explain why something was not seen on the field of play." The cameras highlighted how a handball by an Atletico Madrid defender in their match against Paris St Germain could not be given onfield by the referee because his line of vision was blocked, with the VAR able to alert the on-field official. In the meantime, other competitions around the world can now adopt this innovation, including domestic leagues. Competitions wishing to participate in the extended trial will need to seek permission from the IFAB and from FIFA, who will provide detailed recommendations and technical information to help them use the technology effectively.

Northern Ireland midfielder's arrival from Derby ‘opportune', says St Pat's boss

Stephen Kenny has moved to fill the gap left by injuries to key midfielders by recruiting Northern Ireland Under-21 star Darren Robinson on-loan until the end of the season. Robinson has come in from Derby County, where he has spent the past four years. A former Portadown and Dungannon Swifts prospect, he has played most of his football since his move across the water in Derby's Under-23 side, while he spent the first-half of last season on-loan at National League side Hartlepool United. Robinson said: 'I'm happy to be here. Things moved quite quickly and it was great to get everything done and get over to Dublin and straight into training. "I've had really good conversations with Ger O'Brien and The Gaffer (Stephen Kenny), which was a big pull in coming here too. 'I left home at 16 from Dungannon Swifts to join Derby so I'm in my 5th season now, I need to get some senior games now and feel this is a great opportunity for me in the League of Ireland with St Pat's. It's brilliant here, we have unbelievable facilities and have everything we need. "I enjoyed training this morning and can't wait to hit the ground running now. We've got lots of big games to come and I'm excited to get going.' Robinson has one Championship appearance to his name - in a 3-1 defeat to Bristol City in April 2022. He is a two-time Derby County 'Scholar of the Year' (2022 and 2023). Pat's boss Kenny said: 'Darren is a holding midfield player who is highly regarded at Derby County. He is very professional and has an excellent attitude and has captained Northern Ireland U21s. 'With the injuries to Romal Palmer and Zach Elbouzedi, the timing of Darren's arrival is opportune. We feel he has the overall quality that can help us for the remainder of the season on loan from Derby.' St Pat's are in Europa Conference League action on Thursday in Estonia, where they lead 1-0 against Nomme Kalju 1-0 from last week's first-leg. Football set to copy completely different sport's approach to VAR with managers to be given massive new responsibility

FOOTBALL looks set to introduce a cricket and tennis-style challenge system that will completely transform VAR. This new version of VAR allows managers to request reviews on key decisions such as goals, penalties, direct red cards, and cases of mistaken identity. 3 Football Video Support (FVS) will see referees be asked to review decisions by managers Credit: Shutterstock Editorial The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) is reportedly introducing an exciting new 'low cost' review system called Football Video Support (FVS) to Spain's third tier this season. Under FVS each team gets two reviews per game, and if a challenge is successful, they keep it for later use — if not, they lose that chance. Managers could order a review by twirling their finger in the air and giving the fourth official a review card showing the type of decision being challenged. The referee then consults a pitch-side monitor to reassess the incident, speeding up the process and reducing the costs and chaos associated with traditional VAR. READ MORE FOOTBALL NEWS Several major football leagues now utilise semi-automated offside technology (SAOT), including the Premier League, Champions League, Serie A, and LaLiga. Meanwhile, Spain's top women's league, Liga F, could approve the FVS system as soon as this week, potentially becoming the first major league to fully adopt it. This would mark a significant step toward modernising officiating in women's football, with the Women's Super League currently operating without VAR. If FVS proves effective, LaLiga might consider implementing it too, which could see calls for it to be brought to the Prem.
