Even though most schools are on spring break this week, that didn't stop the JET24/FOX66 Loving Giving Local team from making a stop at a local charter school.
The R.B. Wiley Community Charter School was the recipient of this week's Loving Giving Local donation from Auto Express Resale Center.
The school has two locations, with most students attending class in the former Hammermill Paper Company research and development building.
The Wiley charter school has been a part of Erie's educational landscape 27 years, founded by the late R. Benjamin Wiley, long-time executive director of GECAC.
'We serve as a school choice here in the city of Erie. About 550 students grades K-8 come to our charter school every year. We look to produce the best students we can so they can be successful in their life,' said Joe Cintron, charter school director of operations and HR manager.
Good things happen at the Wiley Community Charter school. Several teachers have been honored with the JET 24 PennWest University Golden Apple award.
Since going to this school is a choice, what makes this place different?
According to Cintron, 'We love the children that come in but we also support families as well. So, we try to do a humanitarian kind of effort and the way we treat our children and families, so when they come here, they're not just part of a school but part of our family.'
While classrooms are empty this week due to spring break, when students in grades K-2 return, they're going to learn they'll benefit from this week's Loving Giving Local donation. 'We're looking to use it for incentives for our K-2nd students for literacy and math, Cintron said. 'So, we're going to give them some assessments, and if they do well, we're going to give them some incentives for that.'
After presenting a check for $250, Joe Askins of Auto Express Resale Center said, 'well this is a community charter school so for us to be able to bring loving giving local here today and to learn the donation we bring is going to go to an incentive program for K-2 grade, that's what Loving Giving Local is all about and we're proud to be here today.'

Loving Giving Local: Rhoxon Productions

Movie enthusiasts will benefit from this week's Loving Giving Local donation. A local movie production company that sponsors a film festival is this week's recipient. Rhoxon Productions got a financial gift from Auto Express Resale Center. Rhoxon is an Erie-based non-profit independent film company that creates organic stories that promote a positive change. Besides creating art, Rhoxon strives to create jobs and educational opportunities in the film industry. 'Our last few projects have been about healing and about coping, and our next two are about revamping the social justice system,' said Katie Nixon, RhoxonProductions co-founder. 'That's sort of our creative endeavors, and we also create educational opportunities for people to learn how to do this professionally.' Nixon says Rhoxon has a vision of creating 50 new jobs in the film industry here. And she insists you no longer have to be on the East or West Coast to have a film career. 'No, the landscape has changed so much. Even Netflix has created their new studio out in Jersey. It's not just that you have be in New York or LA,' she explained. 'Erie is kinda a really interesting place. You have beach, you have woods, you have city, you have country all within 15 minutes of each other.' That landscape diversity, Nixon said, makes Northwest Pennsylvania the perfect place for shooting movies. This week's Loving Giving Local donation will help support an upcoming film festival. Nixon said, 'We started the only multi-genre film festival here in Erie. It's the Lake Effect Film Festival, which will be in September. So that money will go to help make that event possible.' After making his check presentation, Joe Askins of Auto Express Resale Center said, 'We're pretty fortunate to have Rhoxon in our community and they're already doing great things. So for us to be able to deliver loving giving local and to learn the donation we bring is going toward their film festival, that's what Loving Giving Local is all about,' Askins said. Gov. Kim Reynolds signs bill aimed at growing rural hospital workforces

GUTHRIE CENTER, Iowa — Governor Kim Reynolds signed her top priority into law on Wednesday afternoon. The Governor signed her own proposed legislation at the Guthrie County Hospital, with state health care leaders, lawmakers and health care workers in attendance. The bill, HF 972, has a plethora of provisions aimed at incentivizing medical students in the state to practice here. 'Iowa ranks 40th in the number of residency slots available to medical students, which means many of our graduates from Iowa medical schools don't get a chance to continue their education and training here,' said Reynolds. The bill sets up a loan repayment program for medical students who commit to work in a rural health care system for at least five years — doubling the funding of the existing program to nearly $8 million. Families part ways with 1,800 Iowa soldiers at deployment sendoff ceremonies Iowa Health and Human Services is also directed to work on receiving $150 million in federal funding that will allow 115 new residency slots to be added annually to Iowa's medical schools. 'Just three to four years from now, the amount of time it takes for a typical residency rotation, we could have up to 450 more physicians being trained right here in Iowa, with some ready to enter the workforce, and we're going to be ready for them,' said Reynolds. The legislation also sets up a $3 million health care credential granting program that will allow hospitals to educate and train future health care workers. 'It's no secret there's a physician shortage and a nurse shortage,' said Chris Stipe, the CEO of the Guthrie County Hospital. 'But let's be honest, there's a shortage of all qualified health care workers in nearly every field. And workforce shortages are often more severe in smaller communities. If we are to continue to effectively care for our rural Iowa communities, critical strategies such as loan forgiveness programs and graduate medical education programs must be funded and expanded and run efficiently.' Governor Reynolds also signed another bill, HF 310, into law that expands the legal definition of 'health care provider' to protect more health care workers who are assaulted while at work by an individual. Outside of expanding the definition, the penalties were increased for anyone who commits the crime. Iowa News: Forecast: Thursday raindrops, then heat Gov.
