George Russell ‘ringing around' rival F1 teams looking for a job
With tensions already high between the two drivers, Russell would have hoped Verstappen's name was the last he'd have to worry about when it comes to his seat.
But with huge speculation over Verstappen's future at Red Bull, The Sun reports Mercedes have emerged as the front runner to sign up the four-time world champion.
Fox Sports, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every practice, qualifying session and race in the 2025 FIA Formula One World Championship™ LIVE in 4K. New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited time offer.
And with Kimi Antonelli only replacing Lewis Hamilton last year, Russell is seen as the more likely to lose his place at the Silver Arrows.
Brundle told Sky F1 that he believes the British driver will be calling around other teams to make sure he has a place on the grid next season.
'I think George Russell is nervous and ringing around a little bit,' he said.
'2026 is massive, biggest change ever in F1 for the chassis and power unit and you guess Mercedes will be there or thereabouts.
'Would you put Red Bull [there] and can Max actually get out of his contract? Something's up.'
The rumours began with Verstappen and Mercedes last year, and they have resurfaced again after his performance-based release clause was revealed.
It's understood that if the 27-year-old isn't in the top three of the Drivers' Championship at the summer break, the clause can be triggered.
Verstappen currently is third in the standings, but ironically, just nine points ahead of Russell who could leap ahead of him if he enjoys a successful British Grand Prix this weekend.
More speculation about Verstappen's future arose during last weekend's race in Austria.
The Dutchman crashed out of the Grand Prix on the first lap after being shunted by the Mercedes of Antonelli.
But the normally hot-headed driver was remarkably calm.
'Every driver has made a mistake like that,' Verstappen said.
'No one does that on purpose, so for me, that is not a big deal.'
Many fans were left shocked by his cool reaction, with ex-Williams and McLaren cult hero Juan Pablo Montoya even suggesting they were 'already teammates'.
'If you wanted to read into things, why was Max so nice to Kimi after their collision? Are they already teammates?' Montoya said.
Were Russell to leave Mercedes, Aston Martin has been tipped as a possible destination.
Verstappen has also been linked with Aston Martin to rejoin former Red Bull racing engineer Adrian Newey.

Ben Shelton beats Rinky Hijikata in 69 seconds at Wimbledon after final game was delayed overnight
Australian Rinky Hijikata has not managed a single shot as American 10th seed Ben Shelton wrapped up their paused second-round Wimbledon match with four unreturnable serves. Two-time grand slam semifinalist Shelton needed all of about a minute and exactly four points — three of which were aces — to wrap up a 6-2, 7-5, 6-4 victory over Hijikata after their match was suspended the night before because of darkness at 5-4 in the third set. "Very different playing over two days and coming out for whatever that was — 55 seconds? — today," the 10th-seeded Shelton said. "I was hoping to maybe hit a few groundstrokes today. I might have to go to the practice courts." The American, who reached the final four at the 2023 US Open and this year's Australian Open, was about to try to serve out the match on Thursday at 9:30pm local time when action was halted on court two, which does not have a roof or artificial lights. They came back out to the same stadium a little less than 16 hours later and, after a warm-up period that was quite a bit longer than the actual play on Friday, Shelton began with a 227 kph ace. The 22-year-old left-hander then hit a second serve that resulted in a framed return by Hijikata, followed by an ace at 225 kph and one more at 190 kph to end things quickly. "You come out here, serving for the match, the nerves are there a little bit. To hit three aces and take the pressure off of myself, I couldn't have been happier with what I came out here and did," said Shelton, who will face 105th-ranked Márton Fucsovics of Hungary for a chance to reach the fourth round at the All England Club for the second consecutive year. Gold-medal-winning footballer and Shelton's girlfriend Trinity Rodman joked on social media: "Nothing like a 2-minute-long match. Congrats Benny." Shelton told the crowd: "I'm sorry that you guys didn't really get to see much tennis." Right before things were halted Thursday, Shelton held three match points while leading 5-3 and at 0-40 on Hijikata's serve, but the 87th-ranked Hijikata grabbed the next five points to extend the contest into what turned out to be a second day. "It was difficult. At that point we kind of knew we were playing in conditions that weren't ideal for tennis so for me it was like 'what's one more game?'," Shelton told ESPN. "I understand the tournament's got to make whatever decisions they make and players have got to live with it. For me, I lived with it, I came out today and did what I do." Shelton said he had had matches split over two days on three or four previous occasions at Wimbledon, which does not prize night-time sessions like the Australian and US Opens do. "This seems to be the tournament I usually split over two days," he said. "Whether it's rain or it gets dark out here, it's one of those tournaments that you've got to be able to adjust on the fly, get used to stopping, starting, re-warming up. It's part of what makes tennis fun." Shelton faced only three break points against Hijikata, saving all of them. "A great match," he said. "A clean match." AP/ABC

Hamilton homes in as Piastri is third in first practice
Lewis Hamilton has topped the first practice for his home Formula One British Grand Prix ahead of fellow British driver Lando Norris. The Ferrari man clocked 1 minute 26.892 seconds, beating the McLaren of Norris by a mere 0.023s. Australia's championship leader Oscar Piastri, in the other McLaren, was third, while Hamilton's team-mate Charles Leclerc was fourth. Seven-time world champion Hamilton is yet to be on the podium since his blockbuster move from Mercedes to Ferrari this season. His best result this year was fourth place at the Emilia-Romagna GP and at the Austrian GP. Norris, meanwhile, bounced back from a catastrophic weekend in Canada - in which he crashed into team-mate Piastri - to win the Austrian Grand Prix last week and cut the gap to Piastri in the drivers' standings to 15 points. At Silverstone, it will be Red Bull who will try to overcome their terrible weekend in Austria as defending champion Max Verstappen was knocked out of the race in the first lap after an incident with Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes, and Yuki Tsunoda finished 16th. Verstappen was 10th in first practice, while Tsunoda made way for Red Bull junior Arvid Lindblad, who was 14th. Second practice is later on Saturday (AEST), followed by qualifying on Sunday and the showdown race the following day.
