Here's why there's a five-story-tall inflatable pigeon floating down the Hudson River today

Time Outa day ago
Keep your eyes on the Hudson. Today, on Tuesday, July 8, New York City FC is launching a five-story-tall, 700-pound inflatable pigeon in one of the city's most unexpected guerrilla marketing stunts to date. Dubbed the 'Five Borough Flight,' the massive avian will float down the Hudson River and around New York Harbor in a cheeky tribute to NYC's most resilient resident and the MLS club's unofficial mascot.
Created by Brooklyn-based creative studio Tavern, the campaign is timed to perfection. The FIFA Club World Cup is underway just across the river in New Jersey and the world's soccer fans are watching. NYCFC's message is clear: New York has a club to be proud of—and it's flying high.
The float kicked off its flight from Staten Island's North Shore Waterfront at 8:30 a.m., before cruising past iconic points like Battery Park, Brooklyn Bridge Park, Riverbank State Park and finally Willets Point in Queens—the future site of NYCFC's new stadium, Etihad Park, opening in 2027. A full viewing map and estimated schedule have been released for eagle-eyed (or pigeon-eyed) spectators wanting to catch a glimpse of the bird.
'The pigeon is a tribute to the city that shaped us and a signal that the future of soccer is here in New York City,' said Lauren Scrima, the vice-president of marketing at NYCFC. 'We wanted to tap into the immense pride New Yorkers have in their city and their home club.'
The installation isn't just a publicity stunt; it's also a love letter and a cultural wink, according to Mike Perry, the founder and chief creative officer of Tavern. 'Our goal was to create something impossible to ignore,' Perry added.

Nicola Peltz wears replica of David Beckham's football kit in bizarre rift updat

Considering there's a rumoured feud between her husband Brooklyn Beckham and the rest of the Beckham family, Nicola Peltz Beckham just made a pretty bold clothing choice. The 30-year-old billionaire posed on her family's super-yacht this week wearing vintage Umbro England strip shorts; a replica of the pair worn by her father-in-law David, 50, when he reached the quarter-finals of Euro 96′ with the national team. Nicola, who married eldest Beckham child Brooklyn, 26, in 2022, also looked a little like her mother-in-law with slick, dark hair and statement sunglasses on top of a simple black strap top and the memorable shorts. The US actress posed in the mirror wearing the garms and took a picture of the moment, adding it to her Instagram Story. This comes amid a seemingly serious feud between the couple and the rest of the Beckham clan; none of whom have shut down the chatter. After previous rumours of a feud came and went, they rose fast when Brooklyn and his wife were no-shows at dad Sir David Beckham's 50th birthday bash earlier this year. Having snubbed his dad's big moment, Brooklyn then went on to wish Nicola's billionaire tycoon father, Nelson Peltz, a happy birthday on social media. Nicola has faced the full wrath of Beckham fans, with many accusing her of keeping Brooklyn under the thumb. While Nicola has stayed silent on the feud, she liked a comment by a fan defending her, who said: 'The fact people are in this comment section talking bs about someone controlling a GROWN man is absurd. The guy is an adult and can make his own decisions, leave them be and stop blaming women for everything.' Meanwhile, Brooklyn – who was reported to have been 'disappointed in himself' for missing his dad's big bash – previously vowed to 'always choose' Nicola via his own Instagram video, making it clear where his priorities lie. While neither have directly addressed the feud publicly, they did give a rather cryptic response in a recent interview when asked about how they 'protect [their] privacy'. Brooklyn told Glamour Germany: 'Don't listen to all the nonsense. 'Keep your head down, work hard, stay friendly. 'There will always be people who talk. The important thing is that we're happy together.' Meanwhile Sir David has continued making declarations of love for all his kids online, Brooklyn included, such as in his affectionate Father's Day post. However Brooklyn's younger brothers Romeo and Cruz went down a different route, making what some have interpreted as 'digs' at Brooklyn via TikTok comments and Instagram Stories. When rumours of the feud were blowing up, Cruz shared an old picture of his family and said: 'I love my family, I love you guys more than anything, mum & dad you gave us life and cared for us no matter what, I cannot tell you how blessed we all are to have you in our lives x.' After Brooklyn shared a video saying he'd always 'choose' Nicola, Cruz also took to social media and said: 'It takes 43 muscles in your face to frown, and 17 to smile. Be kind and tell the truth.' Christian Horner tearful as he announced his Red Bull sacking to staff

Christian Horner was reduced to tears when he announced to his Red Bull staff that his two-decade spell as team principal had been terminated. The 51-year-old was effectively sacked from his role by the British-based Formula One team's parent company, Red Bull GmbH, on Tuesday. Horner travelled to the team's Milton Keynes factory on Wednesday to deliver the bombshell news to a stunned 1,500-strong workforce at 10am. The PA news agency understands that Horner broke down as he informed the hundreds inside a room which showcases the Red Bull cars which have won 14 world championships, as well as many more on a Microsoft Teams call, that he would be leaving with immediate effect. In a clip of Horner's speech obtained by Sky Sports News, he said: 'The decision came as a shock to myself. I have had a chance to reflect over the last 12 hours and I wanted to stand in front of all of you to break this news and just express my gratitude to each and every single member of the team that has given so much during the 20 and a half years that I have been here. PA Media Horner gave an emotional address to Red Bull staff. 'When I arrived 20 years ago, with a few less grey hairs, I walked into a team and I didn't know what to expect but I was immediately welcomed. 'We then started to build what became a powerhouse in Formula One. Watching and being part of this team has been the biggest privilege in my life.' An unplanned pause followed as Horner's voice broke before a round of applause followed. Within minutes of his emotional address, Red Bull GmbH released the news to the world that Horner's time, which began with the team's inception in 2005, was up. Their statement read: 'Red Bull has released Christian Horner from his operational duties with effect from today (Wednesday 9 July 2025) and has appointed Laurent Mekies as CEO of Red Bull Racing.' Red Bull Group CEO Oliver Mintzlaff said: 'We would like to thank Christian Horner for his exceptional work over the last 20 years. 'With his tireless commitment, experience, expertise and innovative thinking, he has been instrumental in establishing Red Bull Racing as one of the most successful and attractive teams in Formula One. 'Thank you for everything, Christian, and you will forever remain an important part of our team history.' Horner drove away from Red Bull's Milton Keynes campus shortly before 1130am. His dramatic departure comes 17 months after he was accused of 'inappropriate behaviour' by a female colleague. PA Media Max Verstappen (right) celebrates alongside Horner after winning his first world title in December 2021 At last year's season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix, Horner was cleared of wrongdoing following an internal investigation, only for hundreds of WhatsApp messages – appearing to be exchanged between Horner and the complainant – to then be leaked to the F1 world. Horner, who is married to former Spice Girls singer Geri Halliwell, managed to keep the Red Bull hierarchy onside and fought on. He always denied the claims and was exonerated for a second time of controlling behaviour by an independent KC last August. But he lost a number of key allies along the way, with design guru Adrian Newey, chief designer Rob Marshall and sporting director Jonathan Wheatley all departing. Max Verstappen won a fourth consecutive world championship last year but he has been hesitant to confirm whether he will see out the remainder of his deal which runs until 2028. His father, Jos, is a fierce critic of Horner's and claimed in Bahrain last year that Red Bull would 'explode' if Horner remained in his post. Horner was subjected to boos at F1's season launch in London in February and McLaren CEO Zak Brown said in an interview with the PA news agency the following month that he would feel 'vulnerable' if he were in Horner's shoes. It is believed that a culmination of Horner's reputation, Red Bull's slump in form – Verstappen has won only four of the last 26 races staged – and continued questions about the Dutchman's future, have all led to the belief that a clean slate was required. Although Verstappen's team-mate Yuki Tsunoda was at Red Bull HQ on Wednesday, Verstappen was not. PA Media Christian Horner and his wife Geri at last year's Bahrain Grand Prix. Verstappen later posted a picture of himself embracing Horner in the wake of winning his fourth title in Las Vegas last November. Verstappen wrote: 'From my first race win, to four world championships, we have shared incredible successes. Winning memorable races and breaking countless record. Thank you for everything, Christian.' Horner had been the longest-serving boss in F, and will be remembered as one of its most decorated team principals. Red Bull won their first world championship in 2010, with Sebastian Vettel taking four consecutive titles. Following a period of dominance by Mercedes, Horner oversaw Red Bull's rise to the top again. In 2023, Red Bull won 21 of the 22 races staged, with Verstappen setting a new record for 10 consecutive victories. However, Verstappen has already ruled himself out of this season's race. He secured pole position at the recent British Grand Prix – Horner's final race in charge – but finished only fifth. He is 69 points behind championship leader Oscar Piastri at the midway stage of the 24-round season, with Red Bull a distant fourth in the constructors' standings. Christian Horner sacked as Red Bull team principal

Formula One's longest-serving team principal, Christian Horner has been sacked by Red Bull, as ITV News' Amy Lewis reports Horner was twice exonerated of the claims by the Milton Keynes-based Formula One team's parent company, Red Bull GmBH. On Wednesday a statement from Red Bull GmbH, read: 'Red Bull has released Christian Horner from his operational duties with effect from today (Wednesday 9 July 2025) and has appointed Laurent Mekies as CEO of Red Bull Racing.' Horner was first cleared of wrong-doing at Red Bull following an independent investigation in late February 2024. But just 24 hours later, his future at F1 was thrust back into uncertainty after hundreds of messages and a number of images apparently between Horner and the complainant were sent from an anonymous email account to members of the Formula One paddock. Red Bull suspended the woman at the centre of the allegations in March last year, and confirmed in August that it had dismissed an appeal by the complainant. During this period Horner lost a number of key figures at Red Bull, with design guru Adrian Newey, chief designer Rob Marshall and sporting director Jonathan Wheatley all departing. Horner was subjected to boos at F1's launch in London in February this year, and McLaren CEO Zak Brown said in an interview with the PA news agency the following month he would feel 'vulnerable' if he were in Horner's shoes. 'When I go and meet my board, I would not be feeling great because they would be going, 'Well, why did he leave? Why did he leave? And why did he leave? Oh, and by the way, you didn't seem to get a very warm welcome at the launch',' Brown said. 'I don't know how they feel. But I would feel vulnerable.' Horner, 51, had been team principal at Red Bull since 2005, overseeing eight drivers' world championships and six constructors' titles. However, Red Bull's form has slumped with four-time world champion Max Verstappen having won only two of the 12 races staged this season. Verstappen finished fifth in Sunday's British Grand Prix at Silverstone – a race which would turn out to be Horner's last in charge.
