Players chase birdies at Portrush as hawks target seagulls

Reuters17-07-2025
PORTRRUSH, July 17 (Reuters) - The world's best golfers began chasing eagles and birdies on Northern Ireland's Atlantic coast but hawks were only interested in seagulls as the 153rd British Open began on Thursday.
Tournament organisers have drafted in a team of Harris hawks to keep players and fans safe from swooping gulls on the lookout for snacks or even the odd golf ball.
The four birds of prey, named Aurora, Belle, Caine and Cheyenne, have been at the course since Sunday under the watchful eye of falconer David Trenier.
"They are very, very sociable, used to working with large crowds and are big enough to spook the gulls enough to move them off," Trenier told BBC News Northern Ireland.
The Royal Portrush course had been transformed into a golfing metropolis for the week with a huge range of eating options for the 278,000 fans expected throughout the event.
That also means there are rich pickings for scavenging seagulls which are known to snatch burgers, sandwiches and ice creams out of the grasp of unsuspecting punters.
"When they come in, the presence of the hawk on the course puts them off, they make sure the gulls don't come down," Trenier said. "It is so lovely to see the public reaction, they want to talk and they want to ask questions.
"The kids want to have a picture taken."
The squadron of Harris hawks will have some powerful back-up this weekend with the presence of a 24-year-old bald eagle known as Pilgrim flying in for duty.
"He will definitely disturb the gulls," Trenier said.

Rory McIlroy sparks concern among fellow players by skipping the first leg of PGA Tour playoffs

's latest absence from the PGA Tour isn't a surprise, but it is worrying to rivals fighting to legitimize the FedEx Cup playoffs. The five-time major winner is skipping this week's FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis at TPC Southwind, where he will be the only eligible player not participating in a tournament named for its top sponsor. Asked about the world's No. 2 opting out of one of the playoffs' three legs, rival golfer and PGA Tour Policy Board player director Peter Malnati told Golf Week he was 'very concerned.' Unfortunately for Malnati, there's not much the tour can do to stop McIlroy from skipping a third event this season. With 3,444 points in the FedEx Cup standings, second only to Scottie Scheffler, McIlroy has a comfortable 849-point cushion over third-place Sepp Straka. And since the current FedEx Cup format features a progressive cut, McIlroy can count on advancing to next week's BMW Championship in Owings Mills, Maryland. From there, provided he remains in the top 30 in the FedEx Cup standings, McIlroy would advance to the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. McIlroy actually played in the St. Jude Championship last year, finishing at the bottom of the filed without much of a penalty. 'I mean, I finished basically dead last there this year, and only moved down one spot in the playoff standings,' he told reporters in 2024. McIlroy has already earned $10 million this year thanks to a Masters win and other successes. But the loophole that allowed him to skate by to the second leg of the postseason could be up for review. 'I think there is stuff in the works and I'll leave it at that,' Malnati told Golfweek. Tour Policy Board member Webb Simpson didn't so quite so optimistic. 'I think it's too hard of a thing to make guys have to play,' Simpson told Golfweek. 'We're still a sport where you can play when you want to play.' The FedEx St. Jude Championship starts Thursday with $20 million in prize money at stake.

CBS enjoys highest-rated PGA Tour season since 2018

August 5 - The PGA Tour averaged 2.969 million viewers for broadcasts on CBS, an increase of 17 percent from last year, the network announced on Tuesday. The average is the network's best since 2018. Per CBS, 14 of the 19 final-round telecasts saw a year-over-year ratings jump. This past weekend drew in sizable numbers, as an average of 1.95 million fans tuned into to watch Cameron Young record his first PGA Tour victory at the Wyndham Championship on Sunday. Young strung together five consecutive early birdies and cruised to a six-stroke win at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C. The average fan viewership represents a 36-percent increase from the final of the 2024 event, which was won by Aaron Rai. The broadcast team is set to undergo change for next season after longtime commentator Ian Baker-Finch announced his retirement after 30 years. The Wyndham Championship was his final broadcast. Last weekend's tournament was the final one this season for CBS. The PGA now heads into the FedEx Cup Playoffs, with NBC and its affiliates set to run the show. The FedEx St. Jude Championship will tee off on Thursday. --Field Level Media

Golf betting tips: FedEx St Jude Championship 2025 preview

Ron Wood's tips: How best to side with Scottie There's no getting away from it, Scottie Scheffler is much the best player in this field. He's the world No.1 and the only golfer close to him on pure ability, Rory McIlroy, is sitting out the tournament. This will be the American's first appearance since winning The Open at Royal Portrush by four strokes last month. Still, rather than backing Scheffler at skinny odds to win the event, he can be backed for a first-round top-10 finish at odds against with bet365, which seems pretty fair. Scheffler finished 'only' fourth in this event in 2024, but he was tied for fifth, just two strokes off the lead, after day one and it's hard to think he will be too far off the action this time either. Finally for Fleetwood? Tommy Fleetwood is still seeking a maiden win on the PGA Tour, but he tied for third in this event in 2023, missing out on competing in a play-off by one stroke. The Englishman finished in a tie for 22nd last year, but that came soon after a tough one-shot loss to Scottie Scheffler at the Olympics. That was a tough defeat, but it was also a big, sudden return to form off a missed cut at The Open. There was another tough loss for Fleetwood at the Travelers in June, when he was three shots clear going into the final day but lost by one, finishing in a tie for second. That will have been another hard one for him to take, so middling performances at the Scottish Open and The Open again this time around shouldn't be held against him, and he ought to have regathered himself now for an assault on a course that suits his game down to the ground. Fleetwood is not a big hitter but he does everything else well. While he won't beat Scheffler if the American is on form, he is certainly tempting each-way – and he is a seven-time winner on the DP World Tour, so it's not like he can't get over the line, albeit the biggest tournaments have eluded him. Now, the regular season is over and it's play-off time. The FedEx St Jude Championship is for the top 70 players in the FedExCup standings, although World No.2 Rory McIlroy is absent. There is no halfway cut in this event. After that the top 50 in the standings will contest the BMW Championship before the 30 go on to the Tour Championship, where the FedExCup champion will be crowned. Course overview TPC Southwind has hosted the FedEx St Jude Championship since 2022 and it has been renovated in the past year. The greens are a bit bigger now – but new greens tend to mean firmer surfaces, albeit it has been a wet year. Regardless, you have to find the fairways at this course. The rough is up this year and Southwind favours driving accuracy and a good short game.
