More than 30 illegal e-bike riders fined following four-week-long police crackdown on Sydney's Northern Beaches
E-bikes are bicycles with an electric motor that assist pedalling for the rider and make cycling easier.
Two types of e-bikes are permitted in NSW - power-assisted pedal cycles and electrically power-assisted cycles.
The crackdown, led as part of Operation Kilowatt, uncovered illegally modified bikes in which the motor has become the main source of propelling the bike rather than the pedals.
'Parents need to understand e-bike riders are subject to the same rules as bicycle riders. They need to make sure the e-bike is not unlawfully modified and complies with the law,' Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander, Assistant Commissioner David Driver said in a NSW Police statement.
'Police commonly see illegal and modified e-bikes where the motor becomes the primary source of propelling the bike – essentially making it a motorbike. The use of unlawfully modified e-bikes create a significant risk when used in pedestrian or heavy traffic areas.
'Young people and adults need to understand these risks when riding an e-bike, so they do not become a danger to themselves and others.'
Police conducted 305 e-bike compliance checks, identifying 28 illegal e-bikes which did not comply with current legislation due to adjustments or modification.
Officers issued 32 fines for a number of offences including not wearing a secured helmet or using a mobile phone while riding.
NSW Police said there were "29 warnings given to young people under 14 and 29 young people aged over 14 were issued with official warnings under the Young Offenders Act".
"More than 30 people aged over 18 were given cautions," it said.
Community members have voiced their concerns over the vehicles, which have been involved in several serious injury incidents and even a couple of fatalities in recent years.
According to a St Vincent's Hospital report, more than 500 e-bike riders were taken to emergency rooms due to road incidents between 2022 and 2024.
In 2024, 48 injuries related to e-bikes and e-scooters were recorded at Westmead Children's Hospital and Sydney Children's Hospital in Randwick.
A 32-year-old woman in central NSW was killed in March after she was involved in a crash with a ute while riding her e-scooter on the Great Western Highway in Lithgow.
In Queensland, data released in June revealed four people had died in e-scooter accidents on Queensland roads so far this year.

Domestic violence-accused driver fighting for life after police chase crash
A driver wanted over alleged domestic violence crimes has been flung from his car. He had been attempting to evade police during a pursuit through the Western Sydney region, before a four-vehicle crash that left him fighting for life on Friday, NSW Police said. The 33-year-old man was first spotted by police on Great Western Hwy at Bowenfels, driving a red hatchback on what 7NEWS understands was allegedly a disqualified learner's licence, about 5am. There were no reports of injuries after the ramming, but a police chase ensued shortly after on Bells Line of Rd but was later called off due to 'due to the dangerous manner of driving'. A second police chase began in Faulconbridge, but was again called off for safety reasons. A police chopper tracked the car to Penrith, where the hatchback hit road spikes that had been deployed on Castlereagh Rd and Cranebrook Rd. The red hatchback continued on Castlereagh Rd and smashed into a Toyota SUV, a Sprinter van, and a Hyundai. The 33-year-old man was flung from the hatchback, and suffered serious head injuries. He was treated at the scene by paramedics and then taken to Westmead Hospital in a critical condition. The driver of the SUV — a 35-year-old man — was the only other person who was injured, and was treated for minor hand injuries. A crime scene was established, and an investigation is ongoing. Children and elderly among those caught in terrifying gunfire incidents across Sydney as police confirm no injuries
A quiet Friday evening in Sydney descended into chaos after two homes in separate suburbs were peppered with gunfire within hours of each other, prompting urgent investigations by NSW Police. The first incident unfolded just after 8pm on Queen Street, Croydon Park, when shots rang out in a residential neighbourhood. Authorities say a number of adults and children were inside the home when a lone individual approached the front of the property and opened fire. Witnesses at the scene told police that the suspect stood outside the house and discharged two rounds from a pistol before fleeing. The shooter was seen getting into the driver's seat of a hatchback, which was later observed heading north along Travistock Street. Inside the home at the time were a 44-year-old man, three women aged 40, 51, and 71, along with two young children, aged five and six. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Investigators say early indications suggest the Croydon Park shooting was 'targeted'. A few hours later, at approximately 11.25pm, a separate shooting incident was reported on Calabria Lane in Prairiewood, nearly 20 kilometres away. This time, a unit was struck by bullets while an 80-year-old woman was inside. She too was unharmed. However, police believe the unit was mistakenly targeted, with a white Ford Ranger spotted in the area around the time of the shooting. At this stage, authorities have found 'no evidence' linking the two cases. Anyone who may have information or surveillance footage related to either incident is being urged to contact Crime Stoppers immediately.

Young worker killed in Sydney forklift accident had only started job weeks ago
A young worker killed in a forklift accident in southwest Sydney had only started the job a few weeks ago. The Vietnamese man, believed to be in his 20s, became trapped beneath the forklift while working at a business on Powdrill Rd in Prestons about 5.40am on Friday. WATCH THE VIDEO ABOVE: Man killed after being trapped under forklift. Emergency services arrived to find him pinned under the heavy machinery with critical injuries. Despite the efforts of paramedics, he died at the scene from his injuries. He has not yet been formally identified. NSW Police said. SafeWork NSW has been notified and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
