Ministry of Tourism Raises Tour Guide Fees This October

Starting in October, the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities will increase the official fees paid to licensed tour guides, setting new minimum rates for their services.Tour guides working a full eight-hour day will earn EGP 1,800, while half-day shifts covering four consecutive hours will bring in EGP 1,100. These adjustments come after a previous rate update in 2023, when the full-day fee stood at EGP 1,000 and the half-day at EGP 600.
The government's directive is intended to be enforced through official channels, with penalties possible for tour operators or agencies that fail to comply. The decision was coordinated with key industry groups representing tour guides and travel companies.
Tourism remains central to Egypt's economy, contributing an estimated USD 32.2 billion in 2024, or about 8.1% of the country's GDP. Egypt also welcomed a record 15.7 million international visitors in 2024, a notable increase from the previous year.

Barberton Mines, the owner of Sheba Gold Mine, has welcomed the action, stating that illegal mining severely undermines safety and economic stability. Sheba, one of South Africa's oldest and most lucrative gold mines, dates back to the 1880s and played a pivotal role in the country's gold rush. Despite remaining operational, the site has been plagued by theft and soaring operational costs, prompting efforts to restructure and secure its assets. Illegal miners, often referred to locally as zama-zamas, operate in both abandoned and active mines using rudimentary methods. Many are migrants from neighboring countries, while others are South African nationals who turned to illegal mining amid economic hardship. South Africa is home to about 6,000 abandoned mines, many of which have become hubs for unlawful mining operations. Alexandria Hosts Photography Competition on Sunken Treasures

Aug 03, 2025 The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has launched a photography competition centred on underwater discoveries raised from Egypt's Mediterranean seabed. The contest invites photographers to capture artefacts recovered from ancient shipwrecks and now exhibited at either the Graeco-Roman Museum or the Alexandria National Museum. The competition is open to photographers from Egypt and abroad, with entries accepted any time during the museums' opening hours until August 10th. To participate, applicants must submit their selected photograph along with a brief CV to training@ by Thursday, August 14th. Entries will be judged by a panel comprising university professors and specialists in photography and archaeology, under the guidance of the competition's technical committee. Judging criteria will include artistic merit, attention to visual detail, and the ability to convey the unique character of the artefacts. Winners will be announced on Monday, August 18th, with prizes awarded at an official ceremony on August 21st. UAE Becomes Zimbabwe's Leading Export Market in June 2025
Rana Atef The United Arab Emirates (UAE) became Zimbabwe's leading export market in June 2025. It had more than half of the country's total export value, according to figures released by the Zimbabwe Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT). New Ziana and TV BRICS reported this. The UAE snapped up a dominant 54.8 percent, followed by South Africa with 23.5 percent and China with 8.3 percent. Together, the three countries made up approximately 87 per cent of Zimbabwe's total exports for the month. Among the top export commodities were semi-processed gold (53.6 per cent) and nickel mattes (12.7 per cent). Zimbabwe's exports also reached markets in regional blocs such as Southern African Development Community (SADC), The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), and African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Within SADC, nickel mattes dominated exports at 42 per cent, followed by coal products (8.8 per cent), semi-processed gold (7.9 per cent), and chromium ores (5.8 per cent). Exports to COMESA were led by iron and steel products (18.6 per cent) and coal-based coke and semi-coke (10.5 per cent).
