GENERAL
PETALING JAYA, June 26 (Bernama) -- The TVET Admission Unit (UP_TVET) received 189,304 applications to attend Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) courses nationwide for the July intake.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the number showed a significant increase compared to the previous intake of 146,000, thus showing the increasing interest in the TVET field among students.
In fact, UP_TVET is also coordinating the placement of students who failed to secure a place in public higher education institutions after completing the Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM).
"For STPM students who could not get into any university, we would like to offer the Malaysian Technical University Network (MTUN), where six universities, especially those under the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW), namely Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) and Universiti Poly-Tech Malaysia (UPTM), for them to choose courses that interest them," he said.
He said this after chairing the Coordination Meeting between the Minister of Rural and Regional Development and the Rural Exco Members (MEXCLUB) on June 26, 2025 here today.
According to Ahmad Zahid, the opportunity is open to all races to ensure that no students drop out of higher education, especially in the technical and professional fields which are currently in high demand in the job market.
"UniKL will offer technical courses while UPTM focuses on professional courses," he said.
At the meeting, Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Minister of Rural and Regional Development, launched the Desa Kirana programme which focuses on efforts to strengthen the ecosystem and promote rural tourism products, as early preparations for Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
He said two locations had been selected for the implementation of the programme this year, namely Kampung Lonek in Negeri Sembilan and Kampung Tanjung Surat in Johor, while 18 more locations were being identified.

Malaysia reviews electricity tariff and tax adjustments for 2025-2027

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian government has clarified its stance on recent tax and electricity tariff adjustments, emphasising efforts to minimise public burden while ensuring sustainable economic policies. Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi stated, 'If possible, we don't want to burden the people with taxes. But if there are one or two cases where people are affected, we can make improvements. 'However, to outright oppose the electricity (tariff) adjustment — I think that's not right.' The government announced a targeted review of the Sales Tax rate and an expansion of the Service Tax scope on June 9, effective from July 1 this year. Additionally, the Energy Commission confirmed on June 13 that over 23.6 million domestic users in Peninsular Malaysia will benefit from a revised electricity tariff structure. The new rates, approved by the government, will be implemented from July 1, 2025, to December 31, 2027. The adjustments aim to create a fairer and more progressive system, ensuring long-term energy affordability while supporting infrastructure development. Authorities have assured that measures will be taken to address any unintended financial strain on households.

Zahid: No formal appeals received from any individual to rejoin Umno

BENTONG: Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the party has not received any formal applications or appeal letters from individuals seeking to return to Umno, except for two former members of parliament whose reinstatements have been approved. The two are Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman and Datuk Seri Mohd Salim Mohd Sharif, Zahid confirmed. Zahid, who is also Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman, said that he nevertheless respected the motion passed by the Sembrong Umno division calling on the party's top leadership to lift Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein's suspension without any condition. "However, the matter has already been brought to the political bureau for discussion by the Johor Menteri Besar (Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi) in his capacity as the Johor Umno liaison committee chairman. "For the record, the standard procedure requires individuals wishing to rejoin Umno to submit an official letter to the party's headquarters. "I would also like to stress that I do not have absolute power to suspend membership, block individuals, or issue any warnings," he told reporters after attending the Bentong Umno division delegates' meeting here today. Zahid added that all decisions related to such matters would be referred to and decided by the Umno Supreme Council. "Umno has always upheld the values of goodwill and openness, as outlined since the leadership era of the late Datuk Onn Jaafar. "If any individual has made mistakes in the past, it is up to the Supreme Council to make the appropriate assessments and decisions. "We must avoid making judgments based on slander or narrow political sentiments," he said. Commenting on discussions with the Sabah Chief Minister on the upcoming Sabah polls, Zahid said that during a meeting last week with Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, both parties agreed to proceed with negotiations to finalise cooperation between the involved parties. "A special meeting is being arranged to discuss the allocation of seats suitable for contesting by Barisan Nasional (BN), Pakatan Harapan (PH), or other parties ahead of the 16th General Election. "We must learn from previous state elections, where up to eight-cornered fights occurred, ultimately confusing voters and reducing chances of victory," he said. He added that political cooperation must be based on strategy, current realities, and public sentiment - not merely party logos. "Umno is also moving forward with a new approach, including content sharing through online media, strategic use of social media, and communication efforts that are closer to the people. "We must progress further in our political thinking and not remain trapped in old narratives often played up by the opposition," he said.

Explore pre-diploma options if course entry is denied

PETALING JAYA: Students who are not offered a place to further their studies at a higher level or who do not secure a spot in their desired field are advised not to be disheartened and instead explore alternative pathways to continue their education. This advice applies not only to SPM school leavers, but also to those who have completed the Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia or matriculation college. Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Perlis Faculty of Business and Management senior lecturer Dr Muhammad Aiman Arifin said students who do not achieve strong academic results may face limitations in gaining entry into their preferred courses based on merit. One step they can take is to enrol in a pre-diploma programme, which only takes six months to complete, he explained. 'Sometimes, students apply for courses they want without considering their actual qualifications, even when they are not eligible. 'One option is to go through programmes such as UiTM's pre-diploma. After six months, they are already in the system, which makes it easier for them to continue to diploma-level studies. 'This helps them eventually pursue their preferred field at a higher level. We don't want their passion for learning to fade,' he told theSun when contacted. Muhammad Aiman is also the undergraduate coordinator for UiTM Perlis campus. Courses offered under UiTM's pre-diploma programme include Science, Commerce, Plantation, Islamic Studies and another Science course tailored for STEM C and arts stream students. Those interested may visit UiTM's pre-diploma website to register. Muhammad Aiman added that other local universities also offer similar programmes. He noted that many students apply for courses based on interest, but are not eligible based on merit or face other limitations, including financial constraints, which must also be taken into account. 'The main reason many students choose pre-diploma is because they are not qualified to enter diploma-level programmes based on merit. 'This means they simply won't get into the course they want. Sometimes, their results fall just slightly short of the requirement for the course they are aiming for.
