Soccer-Basel, Lucerne give 'green light' to Women's Euro at soccer-themed pedestrian crossings

The Star3 days ago
BASEL, Switzerland (Reuters) -Pedestrians in host cities Basel and Lucerne are being greeted with female soccer-themed pedestrian walk lights, in celebration of the Women's European Championship in Switzerland.
Pedestrian lights near the stadiums and fan zones of the cities, two of the eight tournament hosts, have replaced some of the green silhouettes of a walking person with a pony-tailed woman with a ball at her feet.
"It's a great idea, especially for the women," said Linda van Stokkum of the Netherlands, who was walking to Basel's Euro 2025 fan zone. "I think Switzerland make it well organised and yeah, it's a good sign."
German tourist Malte Wendt is a fan of the change.
"To turn the traffic lights to women for the Euros is a pretty cool idea," he said. "I love it, actually."
During the men's Euro last year in Germany, host city Frankfurt modified their pedestrian lights to feature a green player kicking a ball, and a red referee showing a red card.
Basel will host the Euro 2025 final on July 27.

Soccer-Grateful Bonmati relishing Spain's clash with Switzerland after health scare

Soccer Football - UEFA Women's Euro 2025 - Group B - Italy v Spain - Stadion Wankdorf, Bern, Switzerland - July 11, 2025 Spain's Aitana Bonmati in action REUTERS/Matthew Childs/File Photo ZURICH (Reuters) -Spain playmaker Aitana Bonmati is back to full fitness following a meningitis scare and aiming to continue writing history when Spain take on Switzerland in their Women's Euro quarter-final in Bern on Friday. The reigning world and Nations League champions had their plans disrupted a few days before the tournament as Bonmati was hospitalised with suspected viral meningitis, but the 27-year-old said she is back to her best ahead of the Swiss showdown. "I never thought I wouldn't be here -- I thought I may miss some games, but I never thought I couldn't be here. I'm willing to be in this tournament. What happened was an unexpected thing," she told reporters on Thursday. "I felt super well physically, I was perfect ... and all of a sudden, I was at the hospital. It was a new experience for me, obviously, I was negative because it was five days before starting the tournament and I was at the hospital. "I was frustrated, I suffered, I must admit. All players want to enjoy tournaments but luckily enough I'm ready to play the quarter-finals." A win against the Swiss would set Spain up for a meeting with either France or Germany in the semi-finals, but Bonmati said she wasn't looking that far ahead. "For tomorrow, it's a new challenge for us, we have the possibility to be in the semi-finals. My objective is to try to continue writing history," the two-time Ballon d'Or winner said. Soccer-Sundhage predicts Swiss upset of Spain in Women's Euro fairytale

Soccer Football - UEFA Women's Euro 2025 - Group A - Finland v Switzerland - Stade de Geneve, Geneva, Switzerland - July 10, 2025 Switzerland coach Pia Sundhage reacts REUTERS/Denis Balibouse ZURICH (Reuters) -Switzerland face perhaps the toughest challenge yet as they take on world champions Spain in the quarter-finals of the Women's Euros on Friday, but coach Pia Sundhage predicted a win for her side saying that anything is possible. Sundhage's side have already become the first Swiss team to get out of the group stage at the tournament, and though the Spaniards represent a formidable opponent, the wily Swedish coach highlighted that big upsets have happened before. "I would say this is the biggest ever. And the reason I'm saying that is because we're going to play against the world champions. And also, on home soil, a quarter-final, so I think this is the moment," Sundhage told reporters on Thursday. "We try to share stories, that's what life is all about," she said, revealing that the team had watched videos of the men's side causing a similar upset by beating Spain at the 2010 World Cup. "There are some stories you would like to happen again, so sharing stories brings us together, but they also bring a lot of energy as well, and just the mindset that it is possible." Faced with the might of the reigning world and Nations League champions, Sundhage was supremely confident ahead of the showdown in Bern on Friday evening. "I promise you this -- we're going to do it. It will be difficult, but I promise you," the 65-year-old said. "Not only one by one, we're going to do it together. "And if that togetherness works we have a chance. The most important thing is that we do our very best, we can't do more, we do our very best in the quarter-final in Bern. I think that is something special." The winner of the game will face either France or Germany in the semi-final. (Reporting by Philip O'ConnorEditing by Christian Radnedge)

Motorcycling-MotoGP champion Martin to remain with Aprilia for 2026 season

MotoGP - Qatar Grand Prix - Lusail International Circuit, Doha, Qatar - April 13, 2025 Aprilia Racing's Jorge Martin in action REUTERS/Ibraheem Al Omari/File Photo (Reuters) -MotoGP world champion Jorge Martin will remain with Aprilia for the 2026 season, the Spaniard said on Thursday, having previously announced his intention to leave the Italian team before next season. Martin won his first MotoGP title last season with Pramac Racing before moving to Aprilia on a two-year contract, but in May the 27-year-old said he had exercised his right to release himself for the 2026 season. Aprilia reacted to Martin's announcement by saying they were prepared to take the matter to court, but ahead of his long-awaited return to action in Saturday's Czech Grand Prix, the Spaniard put an end to the controversy. "I'm really happy to be here again. It was a really difficult sixor sevenmonths suffering a lot with a lot of injuries butI'm happy to be here and to be back in MotoGP," Martin told reporters. "Finally, I'm happy to say that I'll continue with Aprilia for 2026." Martin has raced just once this season after a pre-season crash ruled him out of the first three rounds and a crash in his first race in Qatar led to a collapsed lung and bruised ribs.
