Burning Rangers updates as Cerny in bomb squad, Hagi rejects 'extraordinary offer' and Henderson goes unclaimed
Vaclav Cerny's future at Wolfsburg has been thrown further into doubt after the club's transfer chief confirmed they are looking to reduce their squad size ahead of the new season.
The Czech Republic international has returned to the Bundesliga side following his loan spell with Rangers where he netted 18 goals in all competitions, including six strikes in the run to the quarter-finals of the Europa League.
Cerny is reportedly the subject of interest from Turkish duo Trabzonspor and Besiktas, with the latter said to have submitted a £6million offer for the player.
Wolfsburg have just appointed Dutchman Paul Simonis as their new manager off the back of his shock KNVB Cup triumph with Go Ahead Eagles and their sporting director Sebastian Schindzielorz insists cutting down on their squad list is a priority.
He told Zevener-Zeitung: "Our focus is on reducing the squad. We want to slim down."
One other big name who has left Rangers this summer is Ianis Hagi. The Romanian playmaker is on the lookout for a new club after his contract at Ibrox ran out.
The 26-year-old is said to have knocked back an approach from Polish outfit Legia Warsaw, with the club's transfer chief recently going on record to state that the player was simply out of their price range.
And Hagi's boss at international level Mircea Lucescu, now claims that the ex Gers midfielder has snubbed an even more 'extraordinary' offer from a significant European team.
Speaking to Fotbal Club (via DigiSport), he said: "We'll see what happens, another day or two. I don't want to... I spoke to him recently, I don't want to discuss it right now.
"The team he could have joined was an extraordinary one, very good, in a very strong championship. He's a very good player, a talent, you just have to find his place. See where he could give the best performance.
"He should play, he knows very well, he's a professional. He was about to get a very good transfer. I can't discuss it, because it's none of my business.
"It wasn't about money, no. Sure, some people care about money, despite all my insistence on changing the team."
Meanwhile, Ajax have confirmed the departure of midfielder Jordan Henderson.
The former Liverpool captain - who has won 84 caps for England - joined the Amsterdam giants from Al-Ettifaq in January 2024 but is now a free agent after both parties mutually agreed to terminate his contract.
Henderson, 35, was linked to Rangers earlier this year as a number two to Steven Gerrard prior to Russell Martin getting the job.
While talk of a return to boyhood club Sunderland has never gone away, Sky Sports insist that the veteran is not a target for the Black Cats.
Speaking to Ajax's website, the Premier League and Champions League winner said: "I would like to express my immense gratitude to everyone associated with Ajax for giving me the opportunity to represent this incredible institution over the past few years. To play for this club was an honour in itself.
"To have the privilege of captaining it was even more so. My only regret is that we didn't deliver more success for the amazing supporters. They deserve to be celebrating major titles again, and I'm sure that time will come soon.
My family and I were made to feel so welcome, not just by the club but also in the wonderful city of Amsterdam. We will always be grateful for that.
"Due to the tragic events of last week, and the devastating loss of my former teammate Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, it doesn't feel right at this moment to say or do more than share this brief statement. However, I am fully aware that I owe this club, my teammates, and the supporters a fuller and more personal thank you.
"I will, of course, do that when the time feels more appropriate. For now, I want to express my appreciation to Ajax once again, as well as everyone I haven't had the chance to speak to in person yesterday, all of you who make this club so special."

Alexander Isak transfer saga drags on amid Eddie Howe 'clueless' claim
Alexander Isak is looking to force his way out of Newcastle and towards Liverpool. (Image: PA) Liverpool are back home and gearing up to face Athletic Bilbao twice at Anfield tomorrow, with Arne Slot's entire squad set to be handed some minutes with a week to go until the FA Community Shield against Crystal Palace at Wembley. But all the focus for now remains on whether they can bring in Alexander Isak from Newcastle. A deal of £110m has been rejected by the Toon, who want significantly more for their star striker because he has three years to run on his contract. He was also set to return to the North East from Spain this weekend. And while Liverpool have already spent close to £300m on new signings they are under no PSR pressure having already sold several fringe members of the squad while commercial and matchday revenues have grown substantially. Here are the transfer stories worth keeping an eye on as the new season rapidly approaches READ MORE: Transfer news LIVE: Man Utd learn Sesko price, Chelsea agree Hato deal, Liverpool to make Isak move Eddie Howe admits he is clueless over where Alexander Isak 's future lies after Liverpool 's rejected bid. Isak remains away from the rest of his Magpies teammates, who are in the middle of their pre-season tour of Asia, after requesting to leave St James' Park. Liverpool made their first effort to sign him earlier this week having lodged a £110m bid. That was immediately rebuffed by Newcastle, who want closer to £150m, with Liverpool now prepared to walk away from any potential deal if they feel it can't be done. Amid the drama, Howe has given an update and said that he has had no contact with his star striker, while he cannot predict his immediate future. Eddie Howe has offered an update on Alexander Isak's future (Image: Getty Images) If Liverpool are to get their hands on Newcastle United talisman Alexander Isak this summer, they'll need him to "throw his toys out the pram." That's according to former Magpies forward Les Ferdinand, who affirmed his old club are "under no pressure" to cash in. "They signed him on a big contract and he's still got a few years left with them, so they're under no pressure to sell unless he throws his toys out the pram," Ferdinand said. The Reds are set to see their transfer pot replenished even further after agreeing a £15million deal to sell Tyler Morton to Lyon. The midfielder looks to be on the way to the east of France after a package including a 20 per cent sell-on clause was deemed worthy of the player's exit. Morton, 22, helped England win the European under-21 Championships this summer and had been linked to Ipswich Town but nobody has matched Lyon's offer. The academy graduate has been present in Arne Slot's pre-season plans but failed to make a Premier League appearance under the Dutchman last term. The departure will continue a summer that has seen a number of exits from Anfield as Liverpool haul in fees to supplment their significant spending. The Reds have already raked in £65m for Luis Diaz from Bayern Munich, £35m from Bayer Leverkusen for Jarell Quansah, £18m for Caoimhin Kelleher, £10m for Trent Alexander-Arnold and £3m for Nat Phillips. Max Verstappen 'killed' career of F1 star but now top teams are considering him again
Five years ago, one driver's Formula 1 career looked over after just two years in the sport, but Alex Albon has not only worked his way back onto the grid but is thriving with Williams On the Formula 1 grid right now, there are two stellar examples of drivers who have made it back after being cast out into the wilderness. One of them is Nico Hulkenberg, who spent three years without a race seat before getting another chance and is leading the Audi project on track, aged 37, now as a podium winner at Silverstone. The other is almost a decade his junior and managed to cling onto his F1 career despite having had far less experience when he was given the boot. Alex Albon had a whirlwind start to life in the sport, spending just half-a-season driving for Toro Rosso in 2019 before being hastily elevated into a Red Bull Racing seat. That accelerated timeline came about because his predecessor, Pierre Gasly, had floundered. And it was similarly tough for Albon alongside Max Verstappen, who is and has for a long time been the undisputed number one driver at Red Bull. Several drivers who have tried to survive alongside the Dutchman have been chewed up and spat out. Albon was in that position for 18 months but was axed at the end of the Covid-hit 2020 campaign and had no place on the grid for the following season. As Guenther Steiner recently put it, his career was one of several "killed" by Verstappen. After a year out, he was given a chance by Williams – his return to the F1 grid assisted by Red Bull with whom he remained affiliated. Despite the team's lack of competitiveness, he impressed enough in 2022 which earned him a new multi-year deal which completely ended Albon's formal relationship with his previous employer. He penned a further new deal last year and the general consensus over those three season was that he did a good job. It was hard to measure, though seeing as his team-mates during that period were a trio of racers who struggles to make an impression – first Nicholas Latifi, then Logan Sargeant and, for the final nine races of 2024, Franco Colapinto. It is this year, now that he is alongside a bona fide star and multiple F1 race winner in the form of Carlos Sainz, that Albon, now 29, has been truly tested. Not only that, but Williams have made tangible progress in their quest to return to the front of the grid after almost 30 years without title success and, so far this year, have been the best of all the teams on the grid outside the 'big four'. Albon, of course, had the advantage over Sainz of having been settled in the team for a few years, while the Spaniard is new and has had to adapt to life after Ferrari. But the British-Thai racer has risen to the challenge admirably and, heading into the Hungarian Grand Prix, has managed 54 points so far this year. No-one driving for any team that isn't McLaren, Ferrari, Mercedes or Red Bull has done better. His performances have not gone unnoticed, especially back at his former team Red Bull. Before he was shown the door last month, Christian Horner was watching Albon's progress with interest, while adviser Helmut Marko, who is still there and has a significant say in their driver decisions, also admires what he has achieved at Williams. Red Bull continue to struggle with their second seat, with Yuki Tsunoda currently occupying it after Liam Lawson was dropped just two races into the season, but the Japanese looks unlikely to retain it beyond this year unless he can find a significant upturn in his performances and results. Plus, the team will also worry that Verstappen will quit next season if they cannot compete at the front with their new engines, built in-house for the first time. Sky Sports launches discounted Formula 1 package This article contains affiliate links, we will receive a commission on any sales we generate from it. Learn more £43 £35 Sky Get Sky Sports here Product Description The 2026 driver market is likely to be a more active one than this year with several drivers out of contract at the end of next season. Albon's performances have made him an attractive target for even the top teams on the grid and team principal James Vowles is fully aware that both his drivers are likely to be the subject of interest from elsewhere. He said in Budapest this weekend that he wants to "make sure we have conversations early enough in 2026" and "commit early, instead of letting things linger until the August break". That would be wise, given Red Bull are not the only ones likely to be sniffing around Albon if they get even the faintest whiff of the possibility of snatching him away from Williams.

Sunday's briefing: Eddie Howe frustrated by Isak saga as Wilson joins Hammers
In Scotland, the William Hill Premiership is under way. Howe frustrated by Isak saga Howe has described the affair as 'complex' (Adam Davy/PA) Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has admitted the situation surrounding unsettled striker Alexander Isak is 'far from ideal'. The Magpies rejected a £110million bid for the Sweden international on Friday from Liverpool, who recently beat them to the signing of Eintracht Frankfurt frontman Hugo Ekitike. The 25-year-old did not travel to Asia for Newcastle's pre-season tour due to what the club called a 'minor thigh injury', only for talk of his unhappiness to emerge. Howe said: 'I don't really know what is going to happen next. The situation is far from ideal and it is quite complex.' Newcastle, meanwhile, have signed Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale on a season-long loan with an option to buy and reportedly made a £65.4m bid for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko. Wilson joins Hammers Wilson's career will continue in London (Bradley Collyer/PA) West Ham have signed Callum Wilson on a one-year contract following his release by Newcastle. The 33-year-old former Bournemouth striker scored 49 goals in 130 appearances in five years for the Magpies. Wilson said: 'I'm excited to be joining a massive football club like West Ham.' Holloway angered by fan behaviour Ian Holloway was appalled by the behaviour of a Swindon supporter (Nigel French/PA) Swindon boss Ian Holloway said he was 'absolutely disgusted' after a fan allegedly threw part of a seat at rival goalkeeper Myles Roberts in a tense 2-1 defeat at 10-man Walsall. The flashpoint occurred in stoppage time, shortly after Connor Barrett scored what proved the winner for the 10-man Saddlers in the Sky Bet League Two opener. Holloway added: 'Whoever you are, you should be ashamed of yourself. I am going to hunt you down and find you.' Opening day frustration for Rangers Rangers were pegged back by Motherwell (Andrew Milligan/PA) Rangers slipped at the starting line of their William Hill Premiership campaign as Motherwell hit back for a 1-1 draw at Fir Park. Gers skipper James Tavernier headed in from a corner in the 14th minute but Russell Martin's side never found any rhythm and Emmanuel Longelo drove in an equaliser three minutes from time. Newly-promoted Livingston came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at Kilmarnock, who paid a heavy price for the sending-off of George Stanger. What's on today? Scottish champions Celtic begin their bid for a 14th title in 15 seasons as they host St Mirren. There are two other games in the SPL with promoted Falkirk taking on Dundee United and Dundee facing Hibernian.
