The second Test of the ongoing five-match series between India and England will be played from July 2 to 6 at Edgbaston in Birmingham. After losing the series opener in Leeds by five wickets, India would like to come up with a big show in the second match and level the series. According to reports in Indian media, star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah will miss the second Test as part of his workload management. Bumrah, who is the world's No. 1 Test bowler, was India's best bowler in the series opener. He picked up five wickets in the first innings.
In addition to Bumrah, Shardul Thakur is also likely to lose his place in the playing XI. Shardul bowled only six overs for India in the first innings and failed to impress with his batting as well.
One out of Arshdeep Singh and Akash Deep is likely to replace Bumrah for the second Test. Akash Deep has played seven Tests for India so far, whereas Arshdeep is yet to make his red-ball debut. The left-arm pacer from Punjab is a regular member of India's white-ball teams and also has played county cricket in England.
As Shardul's replacement, the team management will have a choice to make between Nitish Kumar Reddy and Kuldeep Yadav. Nitish played all five Tests against Australia in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and in addition to his batting, he can contribute with the ball as well, whereas Kuldeep is India's specialist spinner.
Many former greats and experts of the game have batted for Kuldeep's selection in India's playing XI for the second red-ball match in Edgbaston.
As far as batting is concerned, Indian team management is unlikely to make any change. As many as four batters—Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant—scored five centuries for India in the first Test, and there will be expectations of a similar performance from them in the second match as well. Sai Sudharsan and Karun Nair failed to do much with the bat in Leeds, but they are unlikely to lose their place after just one match.
As far as the England team is concerned, Jofra Archer was added to the squad for the second Test on Thursday, and he could make his much-awaited Test return in Edgbaston.

Fact Check: Virat Kohli Caught Smoking? Viral Image Sparks Debate on Social Media - Here's The Truth Behind The Picture

Amidst a quiet phase following his retirement from Test cricket and India's T20 World Cup 2024 win, Virat Kohli has unexpectedly found himself trending again — this time for all the wrong reasons. A photo has gone viral on social media platforms, especially X (formerly Twitter), claiming that the legendary Indian cricketer was seen smoking a cigarette. The image quickly spread across the internet, triggering debate and confusion among fans. With Kohli not making any public appearances since Royal Challengers Bengaluru's historic IPL 2025 triumph, the viral photo added fuel to fan speculation. Do u think he is really smoking ? @grok Hiding in X (@DHarsHaDr) June 29, 2025 blud started smoking, looks like he wasn't able to cope with the loses of 11 lives lost in chinnaswamy stampede ex. capt (@thephukdi) June 28, 2025 Is this Virat Kohli? Is he smoking??? — Sai (@TheDiaryofSai) June 28, 2025 Fact Check Is It Virat Or Not? Contrary to online claims, the man in the image is not Virat Kohli. The viral picture is not even new. It originally surfaced in 2023 and again in March 2024, causing similar confusion back then. Upon investigation, it was confirmed that the individual in the image is Pawan Kumar, a known lookalike of Virat Kohli. The photo was taken at the One8 Commune restaurant in Bengaluru, which is owned by Kohli himself. Pawan Kumar was seen smoking hookah, leading to the mistaken identity. This is not the first time Kumar's resemblance to Kohli has misled fans, but the confusion was cleared by fact-checkers and fan pages shortly after the image first went viral over a year ago. Virat Kohli: A Disciplined Athelete Virat Kohli is well-known for his disciplined lifestyle. He has consistently maintained a strict fitness regime and publicly spoken against smoking and drinking. Kohli transformed his physique over the years and credited his clean lifestyle for helping him extend his playing career at the highest level. His commitment to fitness and wellness has also inspired many young athletes to follow suit. In interviews, he has emphasized how dietary discipline and workout consistency were pivotal in his success. Post-IPL Silence and Fan Curiosity After leading RCB to their first-ever IPL title in 2025, Kohli has kept a low profile. His silence became even more prominent after the tragic Bengaluru victory parade stampede, which claimed 11 lives. Since then, Kohli hasn't made any public statements or appearances. This low visibility, coupled with his Test and T20I retirements, has left fans eagerly awaiting his next move particularly in the ODI format, which is now his sole focus in international cricket.

'Heart in my mouth': Rohit Sharma on Suryakumar Yadav's jaw-dropping catch in Barbados

India's T20 World Cup-winning captain Rohit Sharma reflected on the crucial moments of their victory against South Africa in Barbados a year ago, highlighting Suryakumar Yadav 's game-changing catch at long-off to dismiss David Miller as the defining moment of the final match. Speaking to JioHotstar, Rohit detailed the tension surrounding Surya kumar's crucial catch. "Surya was at long-off and that catch—honestly, it was the moment of the match. Even after he took it, the umpires were checking if he touched the rope. Everyone's heart was in their mouth. I was at long-on, watching it unfold. It looked like a six—until Surya flew in and took that blinder. With the wind blowing in, I think it helped pull the ball back slightly." Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel . SUBSCRIBE NOW! "I was standing next to him during the check. I asked him and he said, 'I think I've caught it.' The zoom camera showed the rope didn't move—which usually happens if it's touched. That gave us some relief. But until it flashed on the big screen, you don't know what the third umpire's going to decide," Rohit shared. The victory marked a fitting end to coach Rahul Dravid 's tenure, who had initially considered stepping down after the 2023 ODI World Cup disappointment. India's Day 2 at the Nets in Edgbaston | IND vs ENG Test Series "Rahul bhai wanted to step down after the 2023 World Cup. But we said, 'There's another World Cup in six months. We've come this far. Let's give it one more shot.' He agreed and I'm so glad he did. I'm sure even now he feels that he made the right decision," Rohit revealed. The captain also expressed personal sentiments about the victory. "For me personally, it was also emotional. My identity as a cricketer began with this format in the 2007 T20 World Cup. To come full circle and lift the trophy again in 2024, it was just fantastic." Rohit discussed the team's strategic approach in their semi-final victory against England in Guyana. "Heading into this semi-final, I was quietly confident. We'd played really good cricket leading up to this match and everyone was in form, and we were doing exactly what we had set out to do as a team. Of course, the 2022 loss to England was in the back of our minds—it should be." "It was a heavy defeat. But we learned from that. From 2022 to 2024, we changed a lot of things: our mindset, our preparation, and the way we approached key moments. This time, we were fully prepared. There was belief, and there was clarity in what we wanted to achieve." Quiz: Who's that IPL player? The captain emphasized the importance of early wickets in the powerplay. "Taking wickets in the powerplay was crucial as half the job gets done there. And against England, it was especially important. Both, Buttler and Salt are dangerous, but Buttler is their key player. He's experienced, plays around the world, and knows our bowlers well and how to play Axar, Kuldeep, and Bumrah. So, getting him early was critical. " "We got his wicket in the third over, and Salt in the next. Once that happened, we knew we were halfway there. After that, the game slowed down. We brought on the spinners—Kuldeep, Axar, and Jaddu and they bowled beautifully. The pitch was helping spin, and the idea was to get the slower bowlers on as early as possible," Rohit concluded.
