Tennessee State pushes back inaugural season of its men's hockey program to 2026-27
The Tigers will now start playing in the 2026-27 season rather than in 2025-26.
Tennessee State announced in June 2023 that it was planning to become the first historically Black college and university to sponsor Division I men's hockey. Duanté Abercrombie was hired as the program's first head coach in April 2024.
School officials said Thursday the decision to delay the start of competition was made in collaboration with the NHL, Nashville Predators and College Hockey Inc., and that it reflected their 'shared commitment to building a sustainable and competitive program from day one.'
'Working closely with the NHL and the Predators, we agree that an additional year will provide the program with the time and resources it needs to launch at full strength and with long-term financial success in mind,' Tennessee State Interim President Dwayne Tucker said in a statement. 'The extra preparation period will focus on recruiting, facility planning, staff development, and fundraising efforts. It also aligns with a broader vision to grow the sport of hockey in diverse communities.'
The release announcing the move noted that the school had received a $250,000 grant from the NHL/National Hockey League Players Association and continued support from the Predators.
'Deferring the inaugural season of TSU Tigers hockey to 2026-27 is the right step to build a foundation worthy of the university,' said Kevin Westgarth, the NHL's vice president of hockey development and strategic collaboration. 'TSU has faced challenges before and always met them and come back stronger, and we expect hockey to be the latest chapter of that story.'

Four-time Olympic gold-medal winner Léon Marchand is back and chasing more world records
SINGAPORE (AP) — Léon Marchand's life changed drastically after he won four gold medals a year ago in the Paris Olympics. He was a national hero and had to adjust — particularly when he was at home in France. 'I have to plan things,' Marchand explained Saturday. 'I can't just go on my own in the city and just go get bread.' 'I know how to say 'no' better,' he added. 'It gets a lot more peaceful when I travel out of France.' After swimming under the tutelage of Bob Bowman at the University of Texas at Austin, Marchand is back and will head the field at the swimming world championships — the biggest meet since the Olympics. It's also the stepping stone for many toward the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics with races in the pool starting Sunday and running through Aug. 3. Marchand, Canada's Summer McIntosh, and Katie Ledecky of the United States were the stars in Paris. They'll be the swimmers to watch in Singapore, joined by a host of Olympians and younger swimmers who hope to be in Los Angeles in three years. The youngest in the field is 12-year-old Yu Zidi of China, who could be a medal contender in her three races with times — and youth — that are shocking global swimming. Marchand will swim only the 200-meter and 400-meter individual medleys and some team relays, opting out of his other gold-medal events in Paris — the 200 butterfly and 200 breaststroke. 'This is a transition year for me, so I wanted to have a lighter schedule than usual,' Marchand said. 'I'm really excited to do just less than usual, you know, just to see how far I can go, how fast I can go.' Marchand will be after the 200 IM record set in 2011 by American Ryan Lochte — 1 minute, 54.00 seconds. He'll also try to break his own 400 IM record (4:02.50) set at the 2023 worlds in Fukuoka, Japan. He credits Bowman — famous for coaching Michael Phelps to 23 Olympic gold medals — for pushing him at Texas. Bowman tutors an international cast of swimmers that this fall will also include McIntosh. 'He knows how to be calm in every situation,' Marchand said of Bowman. 'I think he taught us throughout the years. He also had a lot of experience on the biggest stage, so I trust him fully.' Without the stress of two extra races, Marchand is ready to make more history. 'Of course I want to break all the records,' he said. Cristhian Paredes scores a goal, Timbers beat LAFC 1-0, snap 3-game winless streak
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Cristhian Paredes scored just before halftime, Maxime Crépeau had his third shutout of the season and the Portland Timbers beat Los Angeles FC 1-0 on Friday night to snap a three-game winless streak. Ian Smith played an arcing corner kick into the center of the area and Paredes went up high for a header that deflected of the back post into the net to give Portland (10-7-7) a 1-0 lead in the 45th minute. Crépeau has three saves this season. Los Angeles (10-6-6) played to a 3-3 tie with the LA Galaxy, the defending MLS Cup champions, on Saturday to snap a three-game win streak. Hugo Lloris stopped three shots for LAFC. LAFC's Eddie Segura (red card) served a one-game suspension. Kenny Nielsen, a 23-year-old who made his MLS debut, started in Segura's place. Lozano scores a goal, Sisniega has 1st shutout since 2022, San Diego beats Nashville 1-0
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Hirving Lozano scored a goal, Pablo Sisniega had his first shutout since 2022 and San Diego FC beat Nashville SC 1-0 on Friday night. Sisniega finished with two saves. San Diego (14-7-4) leads the Western Conference with 46 points. Lozano scored on the counter-attack to give San Diego a 1-0 lead in the 53rd minute. Jeppe Tverskov played a ball-ahead from beyond midfield to Anders Dreyer near the right corner of the area before Dreyed tapped a pass with the outside of his foot to Lozano for a first-touch finish from near the penalty spot. Dreyer has 14 of his 27 goal contributions this season in the last 10 games and his 16 assists are four more than any other player in MLS. Nashville (14-5-5) — which lost for just the second time in its last 16 games — went into the game with 47 points, tied with Philadelphia for second in the Eastern Conference and a point behind Cincinnati.
