DGA Reelects Negotiating Committee Chairs Jon Avnet and Karen Gaviola for 2026
Avnet has served on the DGA negotiating committee for the past five contract cycles and was chair for the 2020 and 2023 contracts. Gaviola has served on the committee for the last six cycles and was elected vice chair for the first time in 2023.
National executive director Russell Hollander will serve as chief negotiator. The rest of the negotiating committee, which consists of Directors, Assistant Directors, Unit Production Managers, Associate Directors and Stage Managers, will be elected later this year.
'In these challenging times, it's hard to believe that we are already gearing up for the next round of negotiations with the Studios,' said DGA President Lesli Linka Glatter. 'As we do in every round, the DGA spends an enormous amount of time and resources conducting thorough research to understand the issues facing our members and our industry, while preparing to best represent their economic and creative interests at the bargaining table.'
'Jon and Karen were instrumental to helping steer the Guild in our most recent round, which resulted in major economic gains and creative protections. Our entire membership will once again have the benefit of their experience and deep understanding of the industry,' Glatter continued.
Avnet's directorial credits include the 1991 Oscar-nominated film 'Fried Green Tomatoes' as well as 11 episodes of the FX neo-western series 'Justified.' He currently serves as a National Board member and on the Western Directors Council, and is Co-Chair of the DGA's AI Committee and a Trustee for the DGA Pension and Health Plans.
Gaviola is a veteran TV director whose credits include episodes of 'Lost,' 'NCIS: Los Angeles,' 'The Walking Dead,' and most recently, 'The Boys.' She currently serves as an Alternate on the DGA National Board and the Western Directors Council. She is Chair of the DGA Safety Committee and is a member of the TV Director Creative Rights Committee, Diversity Task Force, and serves as a Trustee for the DGA Pension and Health Plans.
Their return to the negotiating committee comes the same day as the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which negotiates with the DGA and other unions on behalf of studios, announced that former AFTRA national executive director Greg Hessinger will succeed the retiring Carol Lombardini as its next president.
In addition to his AFTRA work in the early 2000s, Hessinger served as director of labor relations for CBS and most recently as chair of the law firm Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp.

Barbara Eden leads tributes to Loni Anderson, ‘WKRP in Cincinnati' star
Tributes continued to pour in following the death of Loni Anderson, the Emmy-nominated actress best known for her role as Jennifer Marlowe on 'WKRP in Cincinnati.' Anderson died over the weekend at the age of 79, just days before what would have been her 80th birthday. Her death was confirmed Sunday, Aug. 3, by longtime publicist Cheryl J. Kagan, who said the actress died following 'a prolonged illness.' Barbara Eden, 93, led the remembrances with a personal message posted on Instagram. The 'I Dream of Jeannie' star and San Francisco Conservatory of Music alum described Anderson as a 'darling lady and a genuinely good person.' 'Like many, I am absolutely stunned and heartbroken,' Eden wrote in the caption of a photo featuring the two friends. 'She was a real talent, with razor smart wit and a glowing sense of humor… but, even more than that, she had an impeccable work ethic.' Eden added, 'Loni, you were one in a trillion, my friend, and even a trillion more.' Anderson starred on 'WKRP in Cincinnati' from 1978 to 1982, earning critical acclaim for her portrayal of a savvy, self-possessed radio receptionist who challenged the era's television stereotypes. The role earned her two Emmy nominations and three Golden Globe nods, cementing her as one of the most recognizable faces on television. Former co-stars and colleagues added their own tributes. Tim Reid, who played DJ Venus Flytrap on 'WKRP,' called her 'one of the dearest friends I've had in my life's journey. Such a wonderful woman.' Actress Morgan Fairchild remembered her as 'the sweetest, most gracious lady.' Tori Spelling, who portrayed her daughter on the series 'So Notorious,' credited Anderson with leaving a 'special imprint on my heart, soul, and very being.' 'When they say 'don't meet your heroes,' they weren't talking about Loni Anderson,' Spelling added. 'She was everything and more to everyone.'

American Eagle stock rises after Trump praises Sydney Sweeney ad amid backlash
Clothing brand American Eagle may be entrenched in controversy over its latest ad campaign, but company shares were only rising on Monday, Aug. 4. The retailer's stock rose more than 23% after President Donald Trump defended its ad starring Sydney Sweeney. Critics have argued that the campaign, which launched on July 23, as well as its slogan "Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans," was a double entendre endorsing eugenics, the pseudoscience that promotes the belief that some genetic features are better than others. After a reporter informed Trump that Sweeney was allegedly registered as a Republican in Florida, the president applauded the "Euphoria" star's campaign. BuzzFeed first reported Sweeney's party affiliation on Aug. 2, though USA TODAY was unable to verify whether a person in public voting records named Sydney B. Sweeney is the Emmy-nominated actor, whose middle name is Bernice. "Sydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the 'HOTTEST' ad out there. It's for American Eagle, and the jeans are 'flying off the shelves.' Go get 'em Sydney!" Trump wrote on an Aug. 4 Truth Social post. "Being WOKE is for losers, being Republican is what you want to be. Thank you for your attention to this matter!" Despite an initial 16% boost upon the ad's release, American Eagle shares were down over the past week as backlash escalated, according to reporting from Reuters and CNBC. However, following Trump's praise, the stock saw a 23.53% increase at the market's close on Aug. 4. What have JD Vance, Americans Eagle and Sweeney said? Vice President JD Vance addressed the ad during a Friday, Aug. 1 episode of the conservative "Ruthless" podcast, where he poked fun at outrage toward the ad, quipping, "I actually thought that one of the lessons (Democrats) might take is 'we're going to be less crazy.'" "And the lesson they have apparently taken is 'we're going to attack people as Nazis for thinking Sydney Sweeney is beautiful,'" he said on the podcast. "My political advice to the Democrats is continue to (call) everybody who thinks Sydney Sweeney is attractive is a Nazi." Some critics have argued that the ad promotes the idea of a conventionally attractive, blonde, white woman with blue eyes being the archetype of "good genes." While Sweeney has not publicly addressed the backlash against the ad, American Eagle issued a statement on Instagram on Aug. 1. "'Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans' is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story. We'll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way," the statement read. "Great jeans look good on everyone."
