Germany vs Sweden: Women's Euro preview, team news & predicted lineups

Yahoo2 days ago
Germany face Sweden in a match that will decide the winner of Group C in the Women's Euros. Christian Wück's side will have to win the game to finish as a group winner since Sweden have a superior goal difference.
The eight-time champions beat Poland and Denmark with five second-half goals. Meanwhile, the inaugural winners narrowly beat their neighbours before scoring three past the tournament debutants.

While both coaches might fancy making changes to their starting lineups, the prospect of finishing the group stage on a high note would give confidence to the knockout stage. Accordingly, we might not see a repeat of the U21 Euros where Antonio Di Salvo made eleven changes to the XI that secured Germany a quarter-final spot.
Germany won all the group stage games in the 2022 Euros, and no opponent player scored against them until the defeat in the final to hosts England. Like Germany, Sweden maintained their record of getting past this stage in all their Women's Euros participations.
There are already two teams that have finished with a maximum of nine points. Spain tied England's record of scoring 14 goals in a group stage, while Norway won all three games by a single goal margin.
Switzerland and Italy are also qualified for the quarter-finals, having finished with four points in their respective groups. Norway face Italy in the first quarter-final next Wednesday before Spain play against hosts Switzerland in Bern the next day.

On Sunday, the last two qualified teams will be known from 'the Group of Death'. Defending champions England can decide their fate by themselves after a big win against the Netherlands, who now need to beat France by a three-goal margin.

Ex-NFL QB Bridgewater says he is suspended from high school coaching for giving benefits to players

(AP Photo/Seth Wenig, File) MIAMI (AP) — Former NFL quarterback Teddy Bridgewater said he has been suspended from coaching his former high school team in Miami because he provided players with financial benefits that he says he'd reported to the school. The 32-year-old Bridgewater publicized action taken against him by Miami Northwestern High School in a social media post in which he also reaffirmed his desire to continuing coaching the team for which he once played. Advertisement 'I'm not going anywhere,' Bridgewater's social media post said. 'And if it comes down to it, I will volunteer from the bleachers like I used to in 2018 and 2019 when no one had a problem.' A message left for school administrators on Monday was not returned. Last fall was Bridgewater's first season coaching his former school, which he led to a Class 3A state championship before signing with Detroit in late December to serve as a backup for the playoff-bound Lions. He wound up seeing his only action in the postseason, completing his only pass for 3 yards in a divisional-round loss to Washington. Advertisement Bridgewater had written in an earlier social media post that he paid for rides, meals and treatment for players last season. This year, he solicited donations to help cover those costs. He said in his more recent post that he reported those payments to the school. Drafted 32nd overall out of Louisville by Minnesota in 2014, Bridgewater appeared in 79 regular-season NFL games during 10 seasons split among the Vikings, New Orleans, Carolina, Miami, Denver and Detroit. ___ AP NFL:

NRL champion calls for Knights to release Kalyn Ponga early after $1.4m star's shock move

NRL champion Scott Sattler has suggested the Knights might be better off releasing Kalyn Ponga immediately amid reports he's been shopped to rugby union. Ponga has reportedly signed with a New Zealand-based rugby union agent, and there's genuine concerns he might have played his last game for Newcastle in the NRL. On a day of drama at the NRL club, it was revealed on Monday that the Knights are preparing to part ways with coach Adam O'Brien at season's end, and are willing to pay him out $1.2 million. The then revealed that superstar fullback Ponga has enlisted the services of a rugby union agent based in New Zealand, and it might trigger an immediate exit from the embattled club. Ponga is under contract with the Knights until the end of 2027 on $1.4 million per season. But he's previously expressed a desire to play rugby union for the All Blacks due to his Maori heritage. According to reports, Ponga and his management haven't gauged the Knights about a potential early release, but there's believed to be some openness at the club about him leaving early if he doesn't want to be there. journalist Brent Read also revealed on Monday night that Ponga's management have 'shopped' him to European rugby clubs to see if there's any interest. Read reported that Ponga's name "has been mentioned" in meetings with officials of a new breakaway rugby competition in Europe. "A New Zealand-based rugby union agent has been shopping Kalyn around Europe," Read said on NRL 360. 'Now, I've been in contact with the Ponga camp today and I didn't really get a straight answer out of them. 'But what I've gleaned from their text messages is if he's being shopped around Europe, it's being done without them giving the agent the green light. That's what's happening at the moment with Kalyn Ponga, he's being shopped, his name's been mentioned by this rebel rugby competition that's going on at the moment, so he is on the radar of rugby union clubs.' It's believed that Ponga doesn't have any clauses in his contract that would allow him to leave early, and the exit of coach O'Brien doesn't tie into the situation. Phil Gould said on Channel 9 program '100% Footy' on Monday night: "I think it's a huge loss for the game to have a superstar walk out on the game and go to rugby like that. "And a huge loss for the Newcastle Knights. I don't know what that says about the Knights at the moment. Kalyn's obviously thinking about his future if he's unhappy where he is at the moment and worrying that the best of his prime years are wasting away with a team struggling. But from a game's perspective I think it would be really disappointing if we lost one of our game's superstars who was only a Dally M medallist a couple of years ago." Speaking on SEN radio, Sattler said it might be in Newcastle's best interests to allow Ponga to walk if he doesn't want to be there. 'When you weigh up injury wise and, and games on field, and from a salary cap perspective, it would also make sense to entertain the idea,' Sattler said. 'If that's the way they need to go and leave a lot of money left in their salary cap to try and go and explore other options. It makes sense.' RELATED: Laurie Daley's worrying admission after glaring mistake called out Cooper Cronk calls out Reece Walsh moment that majority missed Sattler said he's heard rumblings of player disharmony at the Knights. 'I've heard that he's very frustrated (and) a number of players are very frustrated,' he added. 'There's not pure alignment when it comes to all the coaches and are they all on the same page. 'Some players will… go and get advice from other coaches, and that's not ideal. I hope this doesn't happen, but you've gotta probably realise that if Kalyn doesn't want to be there anymore at Newcastle, the only club that could really afford him will be Perth at the end of next year. And whether he's willing to stay in Newcastle for another year, I'm not quite sure.'
