Detroit Zoo's new baby penguin, Atticus, finally viewable to public: When you can see him

Yahoo29-04-2025
On the heels of last week's World Penguin Day, the Detroit Zoo is marking a milestone with the public debut of its newest king penguin chick, Atticus – who weighs a whopping 40 pounds at just eight months old!
Baby Atticus' egg was laid in June 2024. King penguin chicks develop for an average of 50 days; he hatched on Aug. 19, 2024.
'His parents had raised a chick before, so they had experience,' said Detroit Zoological Society (DZS) bird department supervisor Lindsay Ireland. 'Whenever our king penguins lay eggs in the habitat, we move them to an area not visible, an off-exhibit holding area, so they can incubate their eggs safely and quietly and not be disturbed by the other birds. King penguins co-parent, so they'll take turns incubating the egg and turns feeding the chick once it's hatched. Once the penguin is older, they spend less time sitting on their parents' feet being brooded, which is just them kind of hunching over and keeping the chick warm.'
Now, at eight months, Atticus has begun molting, losing his feathers to completely replace his feather coating.
'Atticus is very curious,' Ireland said of the chick's personality. 'Chunk is his father, and King 25 is his mother. They're both very calm birds, so he kind of inherited that from them. Kings, overall, are a little more standoffish with us. They don't really like to be handled or come up to interact with us a lot, but these parents and Atticus are a little more in tune with what we're doing and they want to know what's going on.
'He likes enrichment that the keepers give to him, so when the parents are out in the habitat and he's in the holding space by himself, the keepers give him mirrors to look at. They give him bubbles and little balls to play with, and he loves all that.'

While still spending most of his time behind the scenes, Atticus has, in fact, made his public debut, to the delight of many zoogoers. Ireland shared when guests might catch a glimpse of the chick, and speculated on what's to come in his next six months.
'He's starting his introductions three times a week, where the public can see him,' she said. 'Every time we have divers in our pool, we bring Atticus out so he can get a little more comfortable with all the other birds in the habitat, so if guests come first thing in the morning on Tuesday, Thursday or Friday, they have a chance of seeing him before he goes back in when our dive team is done.
'Eventually, once he is fully molted and has his waterproof features, he will start going out every day and will start increasing that time. He might just be out for a few hours in the morning and start increasing that to where he's out full-time during the day when our keepers are in the building. We see him, in this timeframe, getting in and out of the pool really well.'
Another notable thing about Atticus is his size: At just six months old in February, the chick weighed in at a large-and-in-charge 35.42 pounds – more than either of his parents, and equivalent to the weight of a three- or four-year-old.
'Yeah, he's a big boy,' said Ireland. 'At his heaviest, which was about a week and a half ago, he was over 43 pounds. He's just under 40 pounds right now, which is on the average or a little more than average for kings. But, as soon as he's done molting and starts moving around, he'll start losing weight and become a nice, trim male king penguin.'
Ireland also spoke about how Atticus' birth and study fit into DZS' larger goal of promoting and facilitating penguin conservation globally.
'Anytime that we can raise a penguin in captivity, it really helps us be able to spread that message of what it's like in the wild for penguins – specifically (as pertains to) breeding,' she said. 'A lot of wild penguins' food resource is starting to get depleted because of overfishing and climate change, so we can highlight the troubles that penguins in the wild are starting to have, which is starting to cause a decline in their numbers.
'Everybody's really excited about a king penguin chick, or any penguin chick, so we can really start to highlight the conservation side and what's needed to help protect the wild penguins.'
The Detroit Zoo is located at 8450 W. 10 Mile Rd., Royal Oak. General admission is $27, with a reduced youth and senior rate of $24. To learn more or plan your visit, go to detroitzoo.org.

Riverdance star Michael Flatley to make bid for Irish presidency, court hears

Riverdance star Michael Flatley is hoping to become Ireland's next president, a court has heard. The revelation came out in a legal case over work done on his mansion in County Cork, the Castlehyde. Barrister Ronnie Hudson said there had been a "material change in circumstances" for Flatley and he's set to move back to Ireland in the next two weeks in the hope of running in autumn's election. A legal statement signed by the star's solicitor, Maxwell Mooney, was also submitted to the High Court stating Flatley would "seek nominations to run for president of Ireland". Flatley rose to fame when Riverdance, which features traditional Irish music and dance, became a phenomenon in the 1990s and went on to tour the world. It continues to be performed today. The choreographer and dancer also created and starred in Lord Of The Dance. The 67-year-old - who currently lives in Monaco - strongly hinted at a presidential bid last week, but said he hadn't made a final decision. He told a radio interview he didn't think the Irish people had a "true proper deep voice that speaks their language". Flatley said the "average person on the street" is unhappy with the status quo and "somebody has to speak for the Irish people". Read more from Sky News: The role of president in is largely ceremonial and is currently held by Michael D Higgins, whose term ends on 11 November. The election is expected to take place at the end of October. A candidate needs nominations from at least 20 members of the Irish parliament or at least four local authorities. Those who've already met the criteria are former farming journalist and EU commissioner Mairead McGuinness, and former Galway mayor Catherine Connolly. Former MMA fighter Conor McGregor is among others who have also - although the prospect was universally rejected by other politicians in Ireland.

'Four Letters Of Love' Review - Just Another Beautiful, Boring Love Story

It is a familiar tale of star-crossed lovers. Four Letters of Love attempts to add its two cents on the story trope. In a yawning yarn, the film boasts an impressive cast and beautiful Irish locales, but overindulges in emotional sap. It plays like a dime-store Nicholas Sparks romance, leaving us disinterested. Four Letters of Love reads like a long-winded letter, forever to the point and ultimately unsatisfactory. Even the hopeless romantic crowd may find this to be a dreary trip to boredom. The film starts with an older Nicholas (Fionn O'Shea) reflecting on his life and love. In a story that unfolds haphazardly through different eras, the timeline feels muddled. The story proper is about Nicholas and Isabel (Ann Skelly). Ideally suited, yet they find themselves at a crossroads. Between family feuds, differing passions, and matters of faith, Nicholas and Isabel's love grows further apart. Fionn O'Shea in 'Four Letters of Love'. Photo Credit: Quiver Distribution Family disruptions and tragedy befall both, with Nicholas's father, William (Pierce Brosnan), quitting his job as a mindless bureaucrat to become a painter. For Isabel, her life ruptures when an accident befalls her brother. This prompts her mother (Helena Bonham Carter) and father (Gabriel Byrne) to send her off the island they call home for a convent on the mainland. As Nicholas and Isabel find their lives in tatters and scattering in a thousand different directions, it seems their love is over. However, fate intervenes as we would expect. Miracles do happen, and these two star-crossed lovers are together again. Four Letters of Love aims to be something magical by blending a seed of realism with a story of faith and virtue. While these are compelling attributes, the film itself seesaws on this objective rather than giving us something worthwhile or even elements to chew on. The film is told across the decades, working in a nonlinear narrative that leaves the viewer feeling disoriented and unfulfilled. The film aims to play on the idea of love conquering all, and yes, in these stories, one expects this bit of fanfare. It's just the execution and ultimate ending that remind us of other films and novels that both deliver and elevate the concept. Pierce Brosnan in 'Four Letters of Love'. Photo Credit: Quiver Distribution. A bloated narrative structure leaves us in the Irish moors. However, the talents of the cast provide a glimmer of hope in an otherwise foggy brew. Brosnan, while far from the film's central characters, anchors this picture with a commanding screen presence and natural charm. The former 007 is right at home and provides us with much of the story's central action. His character's life as a workaday civil servant comes to an abrupt end when he interprets a message from God. This divine intervention prompts him to become a painter. His decision to abandon his wife and son and stake a claim off the coast of Ireland is arguably the film's strongest crux. The story of Nicholas and Isabel is the primary focus. Still, the musings of Brosnan or those of Helena Bonham Carter, who, as Isabel's mother, Margaret, is a firecracker of a personality, draw us like moths to the flame. It is never a good sign when the story's supporting characters are more interesting and developed than those of the main characters. Therein lies the challenge and folly of casting such dynamic personalities in a film that is otherwise flat-footed. Ann Skelly and Fionn O'Shea in 'Four Letters of Love'. Photo Credit: Quiver Distribution. Another notable aspect of the film is the sweeping portrait it creates of Ireland. A multitude of emotions arise from the breathtaking cinematography. Many frames are like a painting come to life; in fact, the film's ending holds a stunning landscape by William, capturing the story's final beats. Unfortunately, the tried-and-true elements fail to come together into something magical; however, the film's look and scope are truly magical. Ultimately, genre fans may find film to be equivalent to watching paint dry. The talents of the cast, particularly the veterans, are wasted on a worn-out love story we've seen plenty of times. Beautiful to look at, but falls short. It is like a picture book that, through majestic imagery, rushes to find some deeper meaning. Four Letters of Love will debut in select theaters on July 25, 2025, courtesy of Quiver Distribution.
