This Artificial Intelligence (AI) Powerhouse Could Be Just Getting Started

Globe and Mail20 hours ago
Artificial intelligence (AI) has long drawn the interest of investors. AI has been used in various forms going back to the turn of the century for companies like Google parent Alphabet, and others. The generative AI boom is a much more recent breakthrough, and it is driving considerable investment returns for companies like Nvidia and Palantir Technologies.
The AI-based breakthroughs continue, and that is inspiring gains in other AI-driven tech stocks. Such gains may have just begun for one particular tech stock.
A stock positioned to benefit from AI
The stock that is well-positioned to start benefiting from the latest AI changes is Qualcomm (NASDAQ: QCOM).
Admittedly, Qualcomm does not look much like a winner in AI. It released the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in the fall of 2023, empowering users to incorporate AI into their smartphones. Although revenue growth in handset sales eventually returned to double-digit levels, AI has failed to inspire the level of increased sales that Qualcomm experienced when users wanted to upgrade to 5G.
Moreover, after years of failed attempts, Apple appears finally ready to replace Qualcomm's chips in the iPhone with chips of its own design. Assuming Apple does not reverse course, Qualcomm is set to lose one of its largest customers.
However, it may hearten investors to know that Qualcomm has long prepared for the day when it will depend less on smartphones.
Its Internet-of-Things (IoT) segment has applied its communications abilities to develop end-to-end IoT solutions for applications such as smart homes and industrial automation. Additionally, its communications and AI advances could make it a leader in self-driving through its automotive segment. In the first six months of fiscal 2025 (ended March 30), revenue for the IoT and automotive segments increased at annual rates of 31% and 60%, respectively, significantly outpacing the 12% growth in the handset segment over the same period.
Furthermore, Qualcomm has developed PC chips, making it a competitor to AMD and Intel. In the data center market, it has also partnered with Nvidia to develop custom chips that can support AI workloads within data centers.
Effects on financials
These recent advancements appear to be helping Qualcomm's top and bottom lines more than its stock. In the first two quarters of fiscal 2025, revenue of nearly $23 billion increased by 17% compared with the same period in fiscal 2024. During the same period last year, revenue had risen by only 3% annually.
In the first six months of the year, Qualcomm kept a lid on operating expense growth. Still, with lower investment income and rising income tax expenses, its $6 billion in net income grew by 18% yearly.
Nonetheless, such improvements have not swayed investors. Over the last 12 months, Qualcomm stock dropped by almost 20%, though it is up 27% from the lows it reached in April.
Additionally, the stock sells at a 16 P/E ratio. Although that is not much lower than the average P/E ratio of 20 over the last five years, the earnings multiple suggests a lack of investor optimism about Qualcomm stock. And yet, this reasonable valuation could inspire a bull market in Qualcomm stock. Assuming its non-handset segments continue to grow at a rapid rate, it could start Qualcomm stock on a long-term growth trend.
The growth prospects of Qualcomm stock
Considering the state of Qualcomm's business and stock, it has real potential to begin a long-term growth trend. Admittedly, a lackluster AI growth cycle and the likelihood of losing Apple as a customer have soured some investors on Qualcomm. However, the company has returned to revenue and earnings growth, and its burgeoning IoT and automotive segments deserve significant credit for this surge.
Ultimately, such improvements should not lead to a falling stock price and a rock-bottom valuation. Once Qualcomm's role in AI becomes clearer, such conditions could inspire the beginning of a long-term uptrend in Qualcomm stock.

Former Toronto Maple Leaf Mitch Marner looks forward to fitting into family culture of Vegas Golden Knights

Newly acquired Golden Knights forward Mitch Marner, left, poses for a photo with his jersey alongside Golden Knights general manager Kelly McCrimmon at City National Arena on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, in Las Vegas. (Chase Stevens/Las Vegas Review-Journal via AP) LAS VEGAS (AP) — Family. Winning. Culture. All three have become synonymous with the Vegas Golden Knights through their first eight years in the NHL. They matched the attributes on Mitch Marner's list and why he agreed to a sign-and-trade from Toronto to Vegas, ultimately leaving the organization that drafted him fourth overall in 2015, two years before the Knights entered the league. 'Obviously, the winning regimen they've put up through the last five years, really since they've been in the league,' Marner said during his introductory news conference Tuesday. 'The living arrangements from talking to (Max) Pacioretty and Reavo (Ryan Reaves) just through the last couple weeks, it seemed like everything was a pretty good fit for my wife and I and our new son. 'And you know, the great players they have here. It's where we wanted to be.' Of course, a $96 million contract for a maximum of eight years didn't hurt, either. Both Marner and Vegas general manager Kelly McCrimmon said it was important to get the deal done before July 1, when Marner would have been eligible to go anywhere else and would have been the most sought-after player beginning at noon EDT. 'This was a spot that was very high on my list,' said Marner, with his wife Stephanie and 3-month-old son Miles in the front row, along with his parents, Paul and Bonnie. 'We wanted to come here and went back to my agent and said I'm open to doing this if we can find a way to do it. A couple hours later Kelly called me and said we got a deal going on. 'We thought about going to free agency, but this is the place we want to be. We didn't want to lose that opportunity. And we want to join this hockey team.' Marner joins Vegas' talented and successful core of Mark Stone, Jack Eichel, William Karlsson, Shea Theodore and Adin Hill, which has made the playoffs three years in a row under coach Bruce Cassidy, including winning the Stanley Cup in 2023. 'You want to be in a place where you want to win,' Marner said. 'That's the whole goal of why we do this, you want to hoist that Stanley Cup. This team has shown that they can do it. I'm lucky enough now to hopefully bring another piece in to help bring it back here.' The deal for Marner opened up after Vegas announced veteran defenseman Alex Pietrangelo was stepping away from hockey because his hip injury would require bilateral femur reconstruction that McCrimmon said had 'no guarantee of success.' Pietrangelo going on long-term injured reserve in part paves the way for the Golden Knights to fit Marner in under the salary cap. McCrimmon said Tuesday he doesn't believe Pietrangelo will ever play hockey again. Marner, however, has plenty to offer the Knights, as the two-time All-Star winger leaves the Maple Leafs as their fifth-highest scorer in franchise history at 741 points in the regular season on 221 goals (14th) and 520 assists (fourth). The 28-year-old's 521 assists since his rookie season (2016-17) ranks fifth in the NHL, while he ranks eighth with 741 points. 'We're getting one of the best forwards in the National Hockey League,' said McCrimmon, who also said that conversations about acquiring Marner went back to the trade deadline. 'Elite playmaker, tremendous passer. ... Our fans will love this player. He really adds to our team. He adds to our offense. It gives us another F1 star at the forward position, which we really feel is important. I think that it improves our team tremendously. 'When it appeared that Mitch would be going to free agency, he was our target. He was the player that we wanted.' AP Hockey Writers Stephen Whyno and John Wawrow contributed to this report. W.g. Why Dollar General Stock Jumped 18% in June

Shares of Dollar General (NYSE: DG) were among the winners last month as the discount retailer soared on better-than-expected results in its first-quarter earnings report and benefited from an upward trend in the stock market over the rest of the month. In the end, it was enough to push the retail stock up 18% for June, according to data from S&P Global Market Intelligence. As you can see from the chart below, nearly all of the stock's gains came on the earnings report early in the month. DG data by YCharts Dollar General has some good news Dollar General had historically been a strong performer on the stock market, but it plunged in 2023 as its growth and profits fell. However, the stock now seems to be regaining its footing after starting to implement its "Back to Basics" plan and benefiting from changing consumer shopping patterns. The company showed off these trends in its first-quarter earnings report as same-store sales ticked up 2.4%, driving net sales up 5.3% to $10.4 billion, which beat estimates at $10.29 billion. Dollar General benefited from initiatives it took as part of its Back to Basics plan, including reducing out-of-stocks and ensuring that the point-of-sale area was adequately staffed, but management also said that it was benefiting from consumers' trading down in an apparent response to concerns about tariffs and a weakening economy. After several quarters of declining profits, Dollar General reversed course, posting a 5.5% increase in operating profit to $576.1 million, and earnings per share was up 7.9% to $1.78, which topped the consensus at $1.49. It also raised its guidance for the year as it now sees revenue growth of 3.7% to 4.7%, up from 3.4% to 4.4%, and earnings per share of $5.20 to $5.80, up from an earlier range of $5.10 to $5.80. The rest of the month was mostly uneventful for the retailer, though Goldman Sachs downgraded the stock from buy to neutral on June 24, and the stock shrugged off that downgrade. What's next for Dollar General The retailer appears to be benefiting from the current macro environment and is getting back on track after the latest report. While the company still has work to do to execute on the turnaround, Dollar General has a lot of upside potential over the long term, as the stock would double just by getting back to its previous peak.
