1 dead, more than 14 injured in Hazyview crash
One person died and more than 14 others sustained serious injuries in a collision involving a minibus taxi and a Jeep on the R40 near the Sabie Road (R536) turn-off in Mpumalanga last night.
Marius van Staden from PRU Paramedical Response says they were called to the accident scene at about 20:00.
Lowvelder reports that the driver of the Jeep was declared dead on the scene, while the driver of the taxi was trapped inside the vehicle. Some passengers were reportedly ejected through the windows.
'The Jaws of Life was used to free the taxi driver, who was stabilised at the scene before being transported to a nearby hospital. More than 10 injured passengers were also transported to various hospitals by private ambulances. The cause of the accident is currently unknown,' he says.
An investigation to determine the cause of the crash is underway.
Moeti Mmusi, spokesperson for the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, extended wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured and sent condolences to the family of the deceased.

Fort Hare bodyguard's murder: 2 arrested, third suspect on the run
Police have arrested two alleged hitmen in connection with the murder of Mboneli Vesele, who was the bodyguard of Fort Hare vice chancellor and principal, Prof Sakhele Buhlungu. The Witness reports that the other suspects were handcuffed in Zakariyya Park, south of Johannesburg, earlier in June. This brings the number of suspects arrested in connection with the Fort Hare murder to 12. Ten others have been arrested since 2023, with some still in police custody. Vesele was shot and killed inside a vehicle while waiting for the vice chancellor outside the principal's home in Alice, in the Eastern Cape, on January 6, 2023. Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe says SAPS put out a call to the public for information linked to the murder. On November 15, 2024, the SAPS published the alleged hitmen's photographs and a request to the public for assistance in tracking down the three wanted suspects after obtaining a J50 warrant of arrest for Bafana Chiliza, Nkosiyazi 'Dipopoz' Maphumulo and Siphiwo 'Spijojo' Jejane. 'On June 21, the team proceeded to Zakkariya Park in Johannesburg following intelligence and information from members of the public. Two of the three [alleged] hitmen were arrested. The SAPS confirms Bafana Chiliza and Nkosiyazi Maphumulo are in custody and will be charged accordingly,' Mathe says. She adds that the suspects are expected to appear in the Alice Magistrate's Court today, and police are still searching for the third alleged hitman, Siphiwo Jejane. ‘Waterfront wars' erupt in Cape Town, police bolstered
Table Bay harbour police are appealing to the public for witnesses to come forward following violent incidents involving teenagers at the V&A Waterfront and Canal Walk. Social media has been flooded with videos showing clashes that took place over the weekend, drawing widespread attention and concern. The incident allegedly occurred when two teenage girls began physically fighting at the Canal Walk's restrooms. R19m in fake luxury goods seized in Bloemfontein crackdown
SAPS confiscated counterfeit goods worth over R19m and apprehended six foreign nationals in a series of targeted operations in Bloemfontein. The raids were spearheaded by the National Counterfeit Goods Unit, with assistance from the Public Order Policing team in Bloemfontein, officers from SARS Customs Division, brand protection representatives and private security personnel. Bloemfontein Courant reports that search and seizure warrants, issued under the Customs and Excise Act 91 of 1964, were executed at selected retail premises in Bloemfontein's city centre last week. 'Over the course of two days, more than 13 000 counterfeit items were confiscated that included clothing, shoes, bags and jewellery,' says police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk. '[The] majority of the seized items are imitations of high-end luxury brands.' Six foreign nationals were arrested for contravening the Immigration Act 13 of 2002, with one suspect also facing an additional charge of resisting arrest. 'SAPS remains committed to disrupting and dismantling the illegal trade in counterfeit and illicit goods to protect consumers, safeguard legitimate businesses and support the South African economy,' adds Van Wyk.
