Downtown population, employment up in 2024 as $1 billion in projects underway

Yahoo21-05-2025
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Downtown's population and workforce continued to rebound in 2024 as nearly 29 million visits fueled an increase in hotel occupancy and $174 million worth of projects wrapped construction.
A new report by the Capital Crossroads and Discovery Special Improvement Districts found that Downtown's population rose from 12,000 to about 12,500 last year. The annual report, gauging the vitality of Columbus, said Downtown's office vacancy rate decreased in the last quarter of 2024 to 22.3%, coinciding with an increase in workers from about 88,000 in 2023 to more than 92,000.

Downtown's post-pandemic recovery in hospitality also continued as hotel occupancy reached 58.1%, up from 54.3% in 2023 and 49.1% in 2022. The report said there were 5.2 million unique visitors to Downtown in 2024 who made a combined 28.6 million visits, a million more than in the previous year.
Columbus' bump came as 13 projects totaling $174 million completed construction in 2024, including the $56 million Astor Park office building near Lower.com Field, a $60 million apartment building named The Madison on North High Street, a $15 million renovation of the Scioto Mile Fountain, and a $4 million BalletMet expansion.
Downtown also saw 10 new businesses open their doors last year, including a French bistro at the corner of Gay and High streets and the neighboring first Ohio location for a South Carolina seafood restaurant. The city continued its small business initiative that saw several move into the area, like Black Kahawa Coffee and Three Bites Bakery on Broad Street.
The Capital Crossroads and Discovery Special Improvement Districts hope $1 billion worth of projects under construction will continue fueling Downtown growth. The report said an increase of about 1,000 housing units a year could yield a Downtown population of 14,100 by the end of 2025, 16,400 in 2026 and 17,100 in 2027.

Projects under construction include the $430 million Merchant Tower being built on the North Market's former parking lot, a $107 million conversion of Continental Centre into housing, and an Astor Park residential building with nearly 450 units.
The report noted there are $2.3 billion worth of projects that are being proposed, like the $573 million Capital Square Renaissance project revamping underutilized buildings and surface parking lots, the $290 million second phase of The Peninsula, a $122 million apartment building with a grocer, and the $100 million Capital Line project building a two-mile pathway through the heart of Downtown.

Veolia and AFD Sign Strategic Partnership to Accelerate Ecological Transformation in Developing Countries

PARIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Regulatory News: Veolia (Paris:VIE), a global leader in ecological transformation, and the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) have signed a partnership agreement on July 18, 2025, to strengthen their collaboration in support of environmental services and sustainable development. This three-year strategic partnership aims to combine Veolia's technical and operational expertise with AFD's implementation capacity and local presence to address environmental challenges in emerging and developing countries. The partnership will focus primarily on Latin America, Central Asia, the Balkans, Africa, and the Middle East. This strategic alliance, designed to bring private sector expertise to environmental services, targets three key sectors: water and sanitation, waste management, and energy. It includes concrete actions to: reduce inequalities in access to water and sanitation, a core priority of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), preserve water resources, improve governance and regulatory frameworks related to waste management, develop innovative circular economy solutions, advance bioenergy innovation, decarbonize district heating networks. This partnership reflects a shared commitment by AFD and Veolia to strengthen collective action for sustainable transitions. It aims to promote dialogue and collaboration between the two international stakeholders, notably through technical workshops, exchanges, and site visits. The partnership will also be brought to life through joint Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. 'We are proud to join forces with AFD to amplify our positive impact on sustainable development, especially in the fields of water access, waste management, and the energy transition,' said Estelle Brachlianoff, CEO of Veolia. 'Our operational excellence and on-the-ground expertise, combined with AFD's strong local presence, will help us accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the regions where we operate. This partnership is fully aligned with our GreenUp strategic plan and our ambition to be a catalyst for ecological transformation in all territories. It is a concrete demonstration of how French expertise can act as a powerful accelerator of global ecological transition.' Rémy Rioux, CEO of the AFD Group, added: 'We are very pleased to formalize and strengthen our partnership with Veolia, with whom we already have a rich history of concrete projects—particularly through its subsidiary Seureca in Chad, Guinea, and the Balkans. This agreement will enhance our synergies at the scale of both our organizations to ensure safe and sustainable access to drinking water for populations in our partner countries, and to support their ecological transitions in line with our SDG commitments. Ultimately, this partnership embodies our shared vision to contribute to France's policy of solidarity-based and sustainable international investment.' ▁▁▁ ABOUT AFD The AFD Group finances and accelerates transitions toward a fairer, safer, and more resilient world by working hand-in-hand with local partners around the globe. Through its complementary entities — AFD for public financing, Proparco for responsible private investment, and Expertise France for technical cooperation — the Group addresses all facets of sustainable development. Active in more than 160 countries, including French overseas territories, AFD tailors its actions to local realities and supports community-driven initiatives. With more than 4,000 projects aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), AFD acts on behalf of the French people to mobilize all stakeholders involved in promoting economic development and preserving our global commons — climate, biodiversity, peace, gender equality, and global health. With others, for a shared world. ABOUT VEOLIA Veolia group aims to become the benchmark company for ecological transformation. Present on five continents with 215,000 employees, the Group designs and deploys useful, practical solutions for the management of water, waste and energy that are contributing to a radical turnaround of the current situation. Krispy Kreme turns 88, you get a deal on a dozen doughnuts on July 18

For its 88th birthday, Krispy Kreme is giving customers a gift: a deal on a dozen doughnuts. When you order any dozen doughnuts at the regular price on Friday, July 18, you can get a second dozen of Original Glazed doughnuts for 88 cents. When you drive through or buy in-shop, you can double up and get two 88-cent dozens (when you buy two dozen at regular price); online purchasers for pickup or delivery orders are limited to one dozen. The deal is good at participating shops while supplies last. When you order online, use the code "BDAY" to get the offer. Coca-Cola: Trump says coke agrees to use cane sugar in US sodas, like Mexican Coke "Eighty-eight has never felt and tasted so great,' said Alison Holder, Krispy Kreme's chief brand and product officer, in a news release. 'It's a real joy every year celebrating Krispy Kreme's birthday with our fans and treating them to a special deal. We're so grateful for their love and loyalty." Headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, Krispy Kreme now has more than 357 shops in the U.S., plus its doughnuts are sold in thousands of supermarkets and convenience stores, can be ordered for delivery by app and online, and the company operates in more than 40 countries. The company was founded in 1937 in Winston-Salem, N.C., by Vernon Rudolph, who bought a secret recipe for yeast-raised doughnuts from a New Orleans French chef, according to the Krispy Kreme website. A1: Yes! Our founder was Vernon Rudolph! #KKBDay Rudolph began selling doughnuts to grocery stores, but their aroma began attracting attention. "Romanced by the irresistible scent of doughnut-making drifting into the streets, passersby asked if they could buy hot, fresh doughnuts," the chain said in its 88th birthday news release. "So, Rudolph cut a hole in an outside wall and began selling Original Glazed doughnuts directly to customers on the sidewalk." Timed to the arrival of the new "Superman" movie, the doughnut chain cooked up a "Hungry for Heroes" doughnut collection devoted to DC Comics superheroes: The doughnuts, added to the menu July 8, are available individually and in a custom-designed dozen's box for a limited time at participating U.S. shops (also available for pickup or delivery via Krispy Kreme's app and website). Next week, from July 24-27 (coinciding with the San Diego Comic-Con), you can get a free Hungry for Heroes doughnut if you flash some DC Comics superhero flair, while supplies last.
