Nicky Henderson stuns ‘disastrous' Il Est Francais with £33,000 midweek smash-and-grab

Where next for the Grade 1 winner?
NICKY HENDERSON stunned the 'disastrous' Il Est Francais with a £33,000 midweek smash-and-grab.
Hendo's brilliant mare Aston Martini - whose previously biggest claim to fame was being a work horse alongside Constitution Hill - saw off the King George runner-up in a Listed Compiegne contest in France.

Aston Martini, who is rated 132 over hurdles, was getting 2lbs from Il Est Francais but could have given weight all round as she ran out a decisive ten-length winner.
It was yet another flop for 3-5 chance Il Est Francais, who looked a world-beater when winning the Kauto Star Novices' Chase at Kempton in 2023.
The Noel George and Amanda Zetterholm-trained chaser put in one of the greatest jumping performances the Surrey track has ever seen that day.
And he looked like the King George winner last Boxing Day only to be nutted late on by Banbridge in a Christmas cracker.

But a weak finish in the Ryanair saw questions over his future once more - after he bled when flopping at Auteuil last November.
Now doubts have surfaced all over again after he could only finish third in a race that should have been his for the taking.
Henderson - who is set to wave goodbye to 21 horses at the Doncaster sales later this month - couldn't care less, though.
His Aston Martini, who is closely related to former Grand National winner Rule The World, stamped her class all over this 2m3f race.

Sent off around 7-1, jockey Felix De Giles never had to get serious, merely easing out the mare to win comfortably.
Sun Racing's Matt Chapman was one of those commenting on Il Est Francais' latest nightmare.
And he suggested the horse could benefit from being sent to Henderson, with a change of scenery perhaps enough to reignite his career.
Chapman said on Sky: "You know what, if I was the owner I'd try a change of scenery.

"That's not to do with the way current connections train the horse, but I'd maybe send him to Nicky Henderson.
"Perhaps different surroundings, a different feed, whatever might make a difference to the medical condition - or whatever it is he has.
"Maybe it won't make a difference where he was, but I would just try something different and see if anyone else can sort out his issues.
"Because they have been going on some time now and, for me, it might time to try something different… or give up!

"But I wouldn't personally give up on him."
George didn't sound too disappointed afterwards, saying Il Est Francais would now enjoy a summer break before coming back in the autumn.
Another crack at the King George looks logical but he is out to 20-1 for that now.
Speaking after the win, Henderson said: "That was fantastic, a great performance, and we only came here to achieve one thing and that was to get some black type, as there were no more Listed races in Britain and we've had it in mind for some time.

"It nearly scuppered our plan to see Il Est Francais in the race, but she was amazing.
"It's a beautiful track and it was beautiful ground with so much grass on it, it's a great place.
"I was talking to Noel George and he said it wasn't just Il Est Francais in there and there was also some other very good horses in there.
"It's actually the second time we've won that race and we won it with Fixe Le Kap in 2017 and I rode here 50 years ago in a cross-country, which is a bit scary!"

Ruben Amorim says Manchester United will not let players go cheaply

United's transfer dealings have been widely criticised in recent seasons and Amorim said chief executive Omar Berrada and sporting director Jason Wilcox would not be taken advantage of just to get rid of those surplus to requirements. Alejandro Garnacho is one of four unwanted players left at home by Manchester United (Peter Byrne/PA) 'Some players have to find a new place to have more space in the team and others clearly show they want a new challenge and want new teams,' Amorim told a press conference ahead of the the Premier League Summer Series game against West Ham on Saturday. 'We are just allowing these players to have time to think and to decide. If we reach a point where they have to join the team, they will join the team because they are our players. 'I know for a fact that these people, Omar and Jason, and the club have a number (price) for these players. If they don't reach that, they will be Manchester United players, no doubt about that. 'I understand clubs are maybe waiting for the last minute, but they can have a surprise and I'm ready. I'm ready to receive the players. 'They have more competition – if you want to play in the World Cup you need to play, so I'm really happy with that because I have more options. If they have to fight each other to play, for me it is perfect.' United have spent about £130million on Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Diego Leon but are still in the market for a defensive midfielder and a striker. However, previous mis-steps on transfers mean United are being more circumspect this summer. 'At the moment, our club needs to be really careful when we sign a player,' added Amorim. 'So if we have to start the season with this squad, I'm happy because all the players that are here want to be here – and that for me is the most important thing.'

Hugo Ekitike versatility at Liverpool could provide escape route for Luis Diaz

The PA news agency understands Bayern Munich have returned to discussions with the Premier League champions having had an initial offer of 67.5million euro (£59million) dismissed 10 days ago. Liverpool have maintained they do not want to sell the forward, who has also attracted interest from Barcelona, and Bayern's bid was way below their own valuation of 100m euros (£87m) for an elite forward in the global market. Hugo straight to work 🤩🇫🇷 — Liverpool FC (@LFC) July 25, 2025 Diaz turns 29 in January and has two years left on his current deal but has not yet had an offer of a new contract. However, Ekitike's arrival in a £79m deal – and Liverpool's continued interest in Alexander Isak, who has reportedly told Newcastle he wants to leave – could provide an escape route for Diaz if the Bundesliga champions can come up with an appropriate offer. 'I mean, I do what the coach asks me to do, but yeah, I like to do everything,' Ekitike told the club's website. 'I can't define myself only as a striker (who likes) to finish: I like to play, I like to be in the game, in the collective part of play (and) create also. 'So, I can do both – I can play alone and I like to play also with another striker and I think that's what makes me versatile, but you know now in football you need to adapt.' Ekitike trained with his new team-mates for the first time on Friday having flown out to join them on their pre-season in Hong Kong less than 24 hours after signing from Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday. The Frenchman is impressed with the summer transfer business, with his arrival taking the unprecedented spending by owners Fenway Sports Group to close to £300m. Florian Wirtz is the headline signing so far but he has also been joined by Jeremie Frimpong, Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez and Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili. 'This summer transfer window was great for the club, they bring so much quality,' he added. 'I think the team will be better, I'm sure about that. That's why the fans are pretty happy. 'Obviously Liverpool are already on the top but we have still things to reach. That's why we want to be the best and need to improve every season to go and reach the success. 'It's going to be a difficult season and a long season, but we have the quality to reach everything I think. 'I think I did well last season. Now, I feel ready to make a bigger step and to play on the highest level, to improve myself, to see what I can do. 'That's why I think it's the right timing for me and the perfect moment to come here.'

How Joe Root compares to greats after moving second on list of Test run-scorers

Here, the PA news agency looks at how he compares to the greats of the game. One more rung to climb… 🪜 — England Cricket (@englandcricket) July 25, 2025 – Root climbed from fifth at the start of the Old Trafford Test to second as his score of 150 took him past India great Rahul Dravid, former South Africa all-rounder Jacques Kallis and ex-Australia captain Ricky Ponting – who hailed Root as 'magnificent' while commentating for Sky Sports. – Sachin Tendulkar's 15,921 runs remains the all-time Test record, with Root now 2,512 behind on 13,409. – Sir Alastair Cook, whose England record of 12,472 Root passed last year, ranks sixth on the list. – The top 10 is completed by Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara, West Indies pair Brian Lara and Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Sangakkara's long-time team-mate Mahela Jayawardene. – Fifteen men in all have passed 10,000 runs in Test cricket, with Australian trio Allan Border, Steve Waugh and Steve Smith, India's Sunil Gavaskar and Pakistan's Younis Khan, with 10,099, rounding out that group. New Zealand's Kane Williamson, on 9,276, is the nearest active player outside that mark. – Root has 13,409 Test runs at an average of 51.18, in 157 matches and 286 innings. – He made his Test debut in 2012, scoring 73 against India in his first innings. – The first of his England-record 38 centuries came the following year against New Zealand. His 66 half-centuries are also the most for his country. – Root's most prolific year brought him 1,708 Test runs in 2021 at an average of 61 – though his best average for a single year is 97.13 in 2014, helped by unbeaten scores of 200 against Sri Lanka and 154 and 149 against India. – He has more runs against India than any other nation, 3,249 in 34 Tests, with Friday's effort his 12th ton against them. He has over 1,000 runs against every opponent bar Bangladesh and Ireland, against whom he has played just two Tests each, and Zimbabwe (one). – Over 8,000 of Root's runs have been made in his customary number four position, where he averages 52.11. His best average by position is 61.05 at number five while his career-best score of 262 was made at number three, against Pakistan last year. – Earlier in the series against India, he also set a world record with his 211th Test catch, passing Dravid at the top of that list.
