Elon Musk's AI company scrubs inappropriate posts after Grok chatbot makes antisemitic comments

Chicago Tribune11 hours ago
Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company said Wednesday that it's taking down 'inappropriate posts' made by its Grok chatbot, which appeared to include antisemitic comments that praised Adolf Hitler.
Grok was developed by Musk's xAI and pitched as alternative to 'woke AI' interactions from rival chatbots like Google's Gemini, or OpenAI's ChatGPT.
Musk said Friday that Grok has been improved significantly, and users 'should notice a difference.'
Since then, Grok has shared several antisemitic posts, including the trope that Jews run Hollywood, and denied that such a stance could be described as Nazism.
'Labeling truths as hate speech stifles discussion,' Grok said.
It also appeared to praise Hitler, according to screenshots of posts that have now apparently been deleted.
After making one of the posts, Grok walked back the comments, saying it was 'an unacceptable error from an earlier model iteration, swiftly deleted' and that it condemned 'Nazism and Hitler unequivocally — his actions were genocidal horrors.'
'We are aware of recent posts made by Grok and are actively working to remove the inappropriate posts,' the Grok account posted early Wednesday, without being more specific.
'Since being made aware of the content, xAI has taken action to ban hate speech before Grok posts on X. xAI is training only truth-seeking and thanks to the millions of users on X, we are able to quickly identify and update the model where training could be improved.
The Anti-Defamation League, which works to combat antisemitism, called out Grok's behavior.
'What we are seeing from Grok LLM right now is irresponsible, dangerous and antisemitic, plain and simple,' the group said in a post on X. 'This supercharging of extremist rhetoric will only amplify and encourage the antisemitism that is already surging on X and many other platforms.'
Musk later waded into the debate, alleging that some users may have been trying to manipulate Grok into making the statements.
'Grok was too compliant to user prompts. Too eager to please and be manipulated, essentially. That is being addressed,' he wrote on X, in response to comments that a user was trying to get Grok to make controversial and politically incorrect statements.
Also Wednesday, a court in Turkey ordered a ban on Grok and Poland's digital minister said he would report the chatbot to the European Commission after it made vulgar comments about politicians and public figures in both countries.
Krzysztof Gawkowski, who's also Poland's deputy prime minister, told private broadcaster RMF FM that his ministry would report Grok 'for investigation and, if necessary, imposing a fine on X.' Under an EU digital law, social media platforms are required to protect users or face hefty fines.
'I have the impression that we're entering a higher level of hate speech, which is controlled by algorithms, and that turning a blind eye … is a mistake that could cost people in the future,' Gawkowski told the station.
Turkey's pro-government A Haber news channel reported that Grok posted vulgarities about Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, his late mother and well-known personalities. Offensive responses were also directed toward modern Turkey's founder, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, other media outlets said.
That prompted the Ankara public prosecutor to file for the imposition of restrictions under Turkey's internet law, citing a threat to public order. A criminal court approved the request early on Wednesday, ordering the country's telecommunications authority to enforce the ban.
It's not the first time Grok's behavior has raised questions.
Earlier this year the chatbot kept talking about South African racial politics and the subject of 'white genocide' despite being asked a variety of questions, most of which had nothing to do with the country. An 'unauthorized modification' was behind the problem, xAI said.

Elon Musk says his new AI model ‘better than PhD level in everything'

Elon Musk says his xAI company's latest AI model Grok 4 is 'better than PhD level in everything'. Describing the latest model as 'the smartest AI in the world' at its launch, the billionaire SpaceX and Tesla boss said it had received 100 times more training than the Grok 2 version, which was replaced by Grok 3 in February. 'It is remarkable to see how quickly artificial intelligence is evolving,' said Mr Musk, saying the new model would achieve near-perfect results in graduate exams in nearly every subject and expected the first 'watchable half hour' of television produced by AI by the end of the year. 'Grok 4 is smarter than nearly all graduate students in all subjects simultaneously.' Describing the current time as the 'intelligence big bang', he admitted Grok 4 'may lack common sense' but it might create new technology 'as soon as this year'. 'The most important thing for any AI is to be truth-seeking… You can instil the right values to be truthful, honourable and the values you want to instil in a child you hope to grow up to be incredibly powerful,' he said. The announcement comes in the wake of antisemitic commentary from the Grok 3 chatbot, which included praise of Adolf Hitler. On Wednesday, the Grok's X account posted: 'We are aware of recent posts made by Grok and are actively working to remove the inappropriate posts.' Some experts have said Mr Musk has attempted to steer away from other chatbots such as OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini, which is considered 'woke'. In June, he invited X users to help train the chatbot with 'divisive facts' which he described as 'things that are politically incorrect, but nonetheless factually true.' On Wednesday, Linda Yaccarino said she was stepping down two years after Mr Musk hired her to run X, formerly Twitter, which he bought for 44 billion dollars (£32.4 billion) in late 2022.

Google brings its AI-powered marketing tools to India after ‘Google tax' repeal

Google has launched a suite of its AI-powered advertising tools in India, which debuted in the U.S. in May, as the repeal of the so-called 'Google tax' has made the South Asian market more attractive to global tech firms selling online ads. In March, the Indian government scrapped its 6% levy on digital advertisements, effective in April, as a move to address some of the trade concerns raised by the Trump administration. The United States Trade Representative had criticized the levy by calling it 'discriminatory and unreasonable,' as domestic companies were exempt. Its repeal would ease costs for tech giants, including Google, Meta, and Amazon. On Thursday, Google hosted the local version of its Marketing Live event to debut its AI-powered tools for Indian marketers. One of the tools is 'Generated for You', available within Product Studio, that identifies relevant content opportunities across shopping catalogs and pre-generates images and videos via AI that merchants can save or publish across Google platforms. Another tool is an opt-in feature called Smart Bidding Exploration in search campaigns, which is built on existing Smart Bidding and uses AI to find newer, qualified leads that merchants wouldn't have captured or bid on typically. Plus, Google introduced new agentic capabilities in Google Ads and Analytics. 'These agentic tools can learn from advertising inputs, including datasets, landing pages, assets, and real-time campaign performance, to take the guesswork out of achieving business goals,' Dan Taylor, Vice President for Global Ads at Google, said at a virtual media roundtable. Google brought AI Max for Search Campaigns, which aims to enhance search ad campaign performance by identifying more relevant and high-performing search queries by learning from brands' landing pages, their existing ads, and existing keyword lists. Indian online marketplace for used electronics goods, Cashify, saw its conversions up by 15% and customer acquisition costs reduced by 12% after deploying AI Max during its early testing, Google said. Google also announced that ads will start appearing on AI Overviews in India later this year. Additionally, the company has introduced its shoppable connected TV ads on YouTube in India. YouTube's masthead on mobile will now also start serving ads in the country. YouTube on connected TVs has been the most-watched streaming service on television in India over the past year, said Roma Datta Chobey, managing director of Digital Native Industries at Google India. Similarly, the country has been a significant market for YouTube Shorts, with short videos on the platform viewed trillions of times since launch. As many as 87% of Indian consumers watch YouTube or Shorts as part of their shopping journey, Chobey said. India's digital advertising presence is growing, as the world's second-largest internet market continues to see more users come online. The country's digital ad market is projected to grow over 20% year-over-year, reaching nearly $7 billion by the end of 2025, per a recent Dentsu Digital Advertising report. 'India is such a thriving digital ecosystem. We have the largest number of users who are actively trying and testing our products. So, that's really the reason behind us getting these innovations to India faster,' Chobey said, in response to TechCrunch's question about the timing of the new AI ad tools. India has long been a key market for Google, not just because it hosts the company's largest user base but also due to consistent growth in ad revenues. In fiscal year 2024, Google's gross ad revenue in India increased 11% year-over-year to ₹312.21 billion ($3.6 billion), while its net advertising revenue rose 18% to ₹27.43 billion ($320 million). OpenAI Hits Back at Competitors by Poaching Their Engineers

Microsoft-backed OpenAI (MSFT) has hired several top engineers from competing companies to join its scaling team, according to WIRED. This includes David Lau, who was previously Tesla's (TSLA) Vice President of Software Engineering. The news was shared in an internal Slack message by OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman, who leads the team. Lau will work alongside Uday Ruddarraju and Mike Dalton (both from Elon Musk's xAI), as well as Angela Fan, an AI researcher from Meta (META). Interestingly, Ruddarraju and Dalton helped build Colossus at xAI, which is a massive supercomputer that uses over 200,000 GPUs. It is worth noting that OpenAI's scaling team is responsible for the hardware, software, and data centers that support the training of its AI models. That includes Stargate, which is a major new project focused on building AI infrastructure. Although this type of work isn't as well-known as products like ChatGPT, it plays a key role in OpenAI's mission to build powerful and safe AI. Unsurprisingly, the new hires said that they are excited to join the company, with Lau calling it the most meaningful work he could do, and Ruddarraju saying that Stargate is exactly the kind of challenge he enjoys. This hiring spree comes as competition for AI talent heats up. Indeed, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been aggressively poaching talent by offering generous pay and resources, which has led OpenAI to consider increasing its compensation to stay competitive. As companies compete to develop 'superintelligence,' they are being forced to spend significantly, change their hiring tactics, and explore new markets, such as education, where OpenAI and Microsoft plan to offer AI tools to teachers across the U.S. Is MSFT Stock a Buy? average MSFT price target of $527.37 per share implies 5% upside potential.
