Admin plans to install number-plate recognising cameras at 50 locations in Patna
Patna: In a move to increase surveillance and strengthen security across the city, the district authorities has decided to install Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras at 50 strategic locations across the city. Besides this, the construction of fibre-made check posts and the availability of iron-made security trolleys for vehicle checking will also be ensured to keep a check on criminals and traffic violators. District magistrate (DM) Thiyagarajan SM said as per the departmental instructions, the installation of ANPR cameras, security trolleys, and the construction of check posts should be completed by August 1, from a security and law and order perspective. "The agencies involved in road construction have been tasked with providing these facilities," he said. Notably, 50 locations in the city have been identified for the installation of the cameras, including Malahi Pakri, 90 Feet Road at Kankarbagh, both ends of Parsa flyover, Kurthaul Mor, Mahendru post office, JP Setu, Marine Drive near Didarganj; Kachchi Dargah, Nala Road, Army Cantonment Danapur, Saguna Mor, Gola Road, IPS Mor, Bailey Road overbridge, Harinagar, Hartali Mor, Krishna Ghat near Ashok Cinema; Vaishali Golambar, Sampatchak Mor, Inter-State Bus Terminal at Ramachak Bairiya, Mahadev Mor, Ramdev Chowk, Patrakar Nagar, and Zero Mile, among others. Similarly, fibre-made check posts will be constructed at 27 entry points of the city, which will function as police barracks. Proposed sites include Didarganj-Raghopur Bridge, Karmalichak, Pahadi Mor, Chhoti Pahadi Mor, Bhootnath Road, Khemnichak, Jamanpura Mor, Chanakya Law College, Sipara, Saristabad, Beur Mor, Hathidah Mor, Cantt Area, Usri, Gadikhana Mor, Khagaul Lak, AIIMS Golambar, Mithapur Bypass, R-Block, Gandhi Setu (south bank), JP Setu, Marine Drive, Digha Golambar, Gai Ghat, and Mogalpura. Around 1,000 vehicle-checking trolleys will be deployed at various locations. The responsibility for providing the trolleys has been assigned to the mining department. Traffic SP Aprajit Lohan said different govt departments responsible for the construction of roads will install the ANPR cameras and other facilities. "The reason for this is that whenever a new road is constructed, security should be integrated into its tender. For example, in Bidupur, where the six-lane road was built, they did not install any traffic posts, police posts, or cameras. As a result, the road became a hotspot for over-speeding, stunts, and criminals escaping because everyone knows there are no cameras there. Therefore, it was decided that in the future, any department responsible for road construction must include cameras, police posts, and other security measures in their project plans," he told this newspaper. According to information provided by the traffic police, presently, there are a total of 29 ANPR cameras installed across the city. In a month, 1,507 challans were issued to violators through these cameras. In the murder of gangster Chandan Mishra's murder case, the ANPR cameras, CCTV footage, alerts from toll plazas helped the West Bengal police to nab the four accused from Kolkata.

11 arrested in drug busts, contraband worth over ₹82 lakh seized
A total of 11 individuals, including inter-State drug traffickers, peddlers, and consumers, were arrested by the Hyderabad police in separate operations. The officials seized a total of 386 grams of narcotic substances, including cocaine, mephedrone (Meow-Meow/MD), and ecstasy pills, valued collectively at over ₹82 lakh. The seizures included 276 grams of cocaine, 100 grams of MD, 11 ecstasy pills, three mobile phones, and a country-made pistol with six live rounds. In one of the largest seizures, the Hyderabad Narcotic Enforcement Wing (H-NEW) along with Golconda police busted a Mumbai-Hyderabad cocaine network by arresting four inter-State peddlers, identified as Mujaffar Wahid Shaikh, 30, an electrician, Vinod Kishanlal Shrivasthav, 53, a taxi driver, Chaitanya Vinayak Wagh, 29, an artist, and Mustak Khan, 31, a delivery boy, all based in Mumbai, along with peddler, Prem, 29, a private employee, and two Hyderabad-based consumers. The group was found in possession of 276 grams of high-grade cocaine and eight mobile phones, worth ₹69 lakh. Police said the drugs had been sourced from foreign nationals through sea routes and supplied across States by a chain of individuals. Mujaffar Wahid Shaikh, a fifth-grade dropout from Chanda Bazaar, Uttar Pradesh, had worked as a welder and electrician in Mumbai before entering drug trade in 2016. He used to source cocaine from foreign suppliers who smuggled it into India via sea routes. Similarly, Vinod Shrivastav, a former taxi driver from Prayagraj, transitioned from couriering drugs on commission to full-fledged peddling after a road accident in 2024. Chaitanya Wagh, an aspiring 3D artist, and Mustak Khan, a former delivery agent, were also drawn into the network, each procuring cocaine at lower rates from Mumbai, and selling it to Hyderabad-based peddler, Prem. Prem, who already has multiple narcotics cases against him, used his corporate day job as a cover while actively supplying drugs in the city. In a separate operation, H-NEW and Bollaram police apprehended 28-year-old software employee Harshavardhan alias Harsha, who was caught with 10 grams of cocaine, 11 ecstasy pills, and a mobile phone worth ₹3.1 lakh. A native of Hyderabad, Harshavardhan reportedly slipped into drug use following a love failure, and eventually began sourcing cocaine from Bengaluru and Goa to supply it within the city. Police said he used his income from drug peddling to sustain a lavish lifestyle, frequenting pubs and nightlife hotspots. In another significant bust, H-NEW in coordination with Begum Bazaar police arrested two inter-State drug transporters, identified as Pawan Bhati, 24, and Hemsingh Kachhawa, 26, both from Rajasthan, and a local peddler, Jeetendara Panwar, 28. Officers seized 100 grams of MD, a country-made pistol, six live rounds, one empty shell, and three mobile phones. The total haul was valued at ₹10 lakh. Investigations revealed that Jeetendara, a sweet maker by profession, partnered with his contacts from Rajasthan to distribute the synthetic drug in Hyderabad after his sweet shop business failed in a span of six months. He also illegally acquired a firearm, which he test-fired in Kattedan before his arrest. Meanwhile, Pawan Bhati returned to Hyderabad in May 2025 after working as a driver in his native town following the failure of his shops in Hyderabad. He set up a juice shop in the city during the summer season and later went to Rajasthan to procure MD drug from Surender, a resident of Nagur, Rajasthan, and delivered to Jeetendara Panwar for sale. Hemsingh Kachhawa, an accused in a 2021 POCSO case who was released recently, procured the contraband from Rajasthan and delivered to Jeetendara against a commission. Cases have been registered under various sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and the Arms Act, and further investigations are under way to trace the supply chains, financial trails, other peddlers and foreign nationals involved in the network.

Sinner reappoints fitness coach Ferrara
Rome, July 23 (UNI) World number one Jannik Sinner has re-appointed fitness coach Umberto Ferrara, with whom he parted ways following the investigation into his positive tests for a banned substance. Ferrara and physiotherapist Giacomo Naldi left the Italian's team last August, five months after Sinner returned two positive tests for clostebol. "Umberto has played an important role in Jannik's development to date, and his return reflects a renewed focus on continuity and performance at the highest level," a statement from Sinner's team read. "The decision has been made in alignment with Jannik's management team as part of ongoing preparations for upcoming tournaments, including the Cincinnati Open and US Open." Sinner was cleared by an independent tribunal of any wrongdoing last August but the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) appealed against the panel's ruling that he "bore no fault or negligence". The 23-year-old accepted a three-month ban in February after reaching a settlement with Wada. Wada said it accepted that Sinner did not intend to cheat but bore responsibility for "the entourage's negligence". Sinner said the substance clostebol, which can increase muscle mass, entered his system when Naldi applied an over-the-counter spray to treat a cut on his hand, according to a BBC news. Ferrara said he provided the spray to Naldi for personal use and warned him not to use it on Sinner. After the departures of Ferrara and Naldi, Sinner appointed fitness coach Marco Panichi and physiotherapist Ulises Badio in September. However, he parted ways with them shortly before this year's Wimbledon. Sinner made his return at the Italian Open in May. He lost the French Open final to Carlos Alcaraz in a five-set thriller in June, before beating him in the Wimbledon final this month to win his fourth Grand Slam. UNI BM
