‘The public's eyes and mine are watching': Tengku Maimun urges govt, next CJ to protect judicial independence
Now retired, Tengku Maimun said she still finds it hard to believe she spent six years of her life as Chief Justice and that someone thought her tenure worthy of a book.
'Like this book, I hope my tenure shows that I did my part for this nation and for the rule of law,' she said during her speech at the Asian International Arbitration Centre here.
In her closing remarks, Tengku Maimun said the bigger challenge now lies not with her, but with the next Chief Justice and the Malaysian government to uphold the independence and integrity of the judiciary.
She said she no longer has to carry that burden.
'The larger issue that I must highlight, as I have repeatedly done as Chief Justice, is the matter of judicial independence and integrity.
'The public's eyes, including mine, are on the government and the next Chief Justice on how they lift up the standards of judicial independence and integrity,' she said.
Today's launch event was also graced by Chief Justice of Singapore Sundaresh Menon, and included distinguished individuals from both the judiciary and the Malaysian legal profession.
At almost 800 pages long, the book is divided into three distinct parts.
The first part contains personal excerpts of those who had worked with and known Tengku Maimun closely; the second part contains a selection of reproduced notable judgments personally written and selected by Tengku Maimun; the third part contains curated speeches she made during her tenure as Chief Justice.

What is happening in Gaza is a collapse of conscience, says PM Anwar
KUALA LUMPUR, July 5 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has described the situation in Gaza as 'a collapse of conscience, empathy, leadership, and the ability to distinguish suffering from strategy'. He said the destruction of schools, the collapse of hospitals and the erasure of entire families reflect a deep failure to recognise shared humanity. 'When we fail to acknowledge the humanity in others, we risk losing our own. 'The statistics are not mere numbers, for each represents a human story, of mothers, children, and parents. Their experiences should evoke not just sympathy but a call to action in each of us,' he said during his lecture at Sorbonne University, Paris yesterday. Anwar said the international community speaks of human rights and democracy and the imperative to protect the sanctity of life, yet the global community appears to be powerless to put an end to this protracted genocide. While welcoming the verdicts by the International Criminal Court (ICC) and International Court of Justice (ICJ), Anwar said they are treated with 'utter contempt and impunity by the perpetrators'. 'There are no two ways about this: it is incumbent on leaders of the world to speak with greater moral clarity on this issue, and to act with firmer resolve to end this mayhem and killing. 'Yes, we see the flickers of hope emanating from the recent efforts and actions of students and faculty members in colleges and universities as well as civil society organisations around the world. In their condemnation of the genocide, and their calling for an end to this brutal violence, we find hope and comfort but we need more. 'In this vein, we need to continue to call for global solidarity, advocacy, and the relentless pursuit of justice,' he said. — Bernama

Umno Youth chief urges sacked leaders to ‘set aside ego', says willing to bridge return of Khairy, Hishammuddin and Shahril
SEREMBAN, July 5 – Suspended or sacked former Umno leaders must set aside their egos if they still care for the party, Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh reportedly said. Sinar Harian quoted him saying Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had expressed his willingness to accept appeal letters from those affected by disciplinary actions. 'We need them. As I said earlier, Umno belongs to everyone and must be united again,' he said, referring to suspended or sacked Umno leaders. 'But on one condition – everyone must set aside their ego, love the party, and God willing, Umno will grow stronger,' he added. Dr Akmal said he was ready to act as a bridge to bring back suspended leaders Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, Khairy Jamaluddin and Shahril Hamdan into the party. He said his only goal was to ensure Umno remained strong as a family. 'Umno is a family for all. Those who were disciplined have contributed, and we cannot forget that,' he reportedly said, adding that unity in Umno cannot come from one side alone. Umno Deputy President Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said it would be up to the Umno Supreme Council to decide whether to reduce or revoke Sembrong MP Hishammuddin's suspension. Earlier reports indicated that the Sembrong Umno Division had proposed reinstating Hishammuddin's membership to strengthen the party ahead of the upcoming general election. Hishammuddin's Umno membership was suspended for six years, or two supreme council election terms, starting January 27, 2023.
