I'd Love To Play First Game Of T20 World Cup Against India: Italy Captain Joe Burns

News1822-07-2025
Italy will be playing in their maiden T20 World Cup when the competition will be held in India next year.
After leading Italy to their first-ever T20 World Cup qualification, Australia-born captain Joe Burns is eager to 'jump in at the deep end" by facing defending champions India in the opening match of the showpiece event next year.
Italy secured a spot in the event in India and Sri Lanka with a strong performance in the European Qualifiers concluded earlier this month. The World Cup draws are yet to be finalised.
'You come to your first World Cup and you want the big stage. I'd love to be playing India in the first game in India," Burns told ICC Digital.
'I'd love to be playing Australia, England, or all the top teams. That's the experience you're after. You want to test yourself, you want to really jump in at the deep end," he added.
Burns described qualifying for the tournament as a 'surreal" feeling.
'A lot of planning and preparation went into it (qualifying). So it's satisfying from that aspect of the cricket side as well," he said.
He mentioned that the entire process was emotional for him and the rest of the team.
'We did a one-week training camp in Rome, one week in the UK, and I told them on the first day in Rome, 'I don't care if we're playing Luxembourg in the first Sub-Regional game or India in a World Cup Final. I just want us to be the most prepared team in world cricket,'" he said.
A former Australia player with four Test centuries, Burns joined the Italian squad thanks to his mother's heritage. This helped him through a personally challenging phase, including the death of his brother Dominic.
'For me, it was an opportunity to unite family and cricket, and I think for our group, everyone has a really similar story to that.
'We did a great culture piece in Rome (in the build-up to the Qualifier), about who we are, where we come from, and understanding each other's families and sacrifices made," he said.
Former Canada international John Davidson is the head coach of the team, with ex-Scotland international Dougie Brown and Ireland star Kevin O'Brien as his assistants.
'I've seen a group of players who have grown and developed into a really close-knit group," O'Brien said.
'That can be difficult with players coming from different parts of the world, but the common joining force with this squad is the Italian heritage.
'I've seen the guys improve, and that is not only with their cricket skills, it's all the other things that you need to be successful in International cricket, like attitude, fitness, awareness, cricket smarts, and work ethic," he added.

Manoj Tiwary Against India-Pakistan Match In 2025 Asia Cup: 'How Can We...'

Last Updated: Former cricketer Manoj Tiwary opposes the India-Pakistan match in the 2025 Asia Cup due to recent terrorist attacks. The tournament runs in UAE from September 9-28. On Tuesday, former cricketer Manoj Tiwary expressed his opposition to the scheduled India-Pakistan match in the 2025 Asia Cup, which begins in September. His comments followed the announcement by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) that the Men's Asia Cup 2025 will be held in the United Arab Emirates from September 9 to 28, with the highly anticipated India-Pakistan match set for September 14. Speaking to ANI, Tiwary said, 'I am against it. The India-Pakistan match should not be held. Especially after the terrorist attack in Pahalgam in which civilians have been killed. After that, Operation Sindoor has taken place." Group A in the Asia Cup includes India, Pakistan, UAE, and Oman, while Group B comprises Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Hong Kong. Tiwary believes the India-Pakistan match shouldn't occur in such circumstances. 'The situation was so bad, how can we think of an India-Pakistan match? I feel that it should be reconsidered and the India-Pakistan match should not happen in such an environment," he told ANI. Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued a stern warning to Pakistan from the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, stating that if they dare to act against India, they will receive a fitting response, as India's Operation Sindoor is still ongoing. Regarding this, Tiwary commented on PM Modi's statement, noting that since Operation Sindoor is still underway, scheduling a match against Pakistan seems illogical. 'Our Prime Minister is saying that Operation Sindoor is still going on… How can we play a match with Pakistan?" Tiwary asked. Meanwhile, the tournament opener between Afghanistan and Hong Kong is set for September 9. India will begin their campaign against UAE on September 10, with the high-voltage game against Pakistan scheduled for September 14. India will play their final group stage match against Oman on September 19. Following the group stage, the tournament will advance to the Super 4, where the top two teams from each group will qualify. The final is scheduled for September 28. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. Former Indian cricketer MS Dhoni, otherwise called 'Captain Cool', is generally known to be a very jovial person. True to his nature, the former Indian skipper was seen giving some marriage advice dosed with a splash of humour as he raised a toast to the groom at a wedding. Dhoni, while making an appearance at the wedding of Utkarsh Sanghvi and Dhvani Kanungo, offered some marital advice that quickly went viral on social media. The veteran Chennai Super Kings player took the stage and said, 'Marriage is a very good thing. You were the one in a hurry to do it." 'Some people like to play with fire. He is one of them… Now, Utkarsh is also under an illusion. My answer is the same as always," he further said, in a reference to his famous 'meri wali alag hai (My woman is different) line. 'Every husband here is in the same boat. It hardly matters whether you've won a World Cup or not," Dhoni added. Speaking to the bride, Dhoni said, 'If your husband is angry, don't say anything in that moment. We cool down in five minutes. We know our power." Concluding his speech, the former cricketer mentioned that men laugh at his jokes, while wishing the best to the newly married couple. While stepping down from the stage, the crowd started chanting, 'Dhoni! Dhoni!", just like a stadium match. The video received more than 4.2 million views on Instagram and 328,000 likes since it was uploaded. 'Stand-up comedians ki job ab khatre me (the jobs of stand-up comedians are in danger)," a user said in the comment section. 'And Dhoni Finishes off in Style," another person said. A third person wrote, 'THALA did graduation in marriage and love department." The legendary MS Dhoni continues to be one of the biggest draws in IPL despite having retired from international cricket for nearly five years now. His future though remains a hotly debated topic especially with his abilities hampered by a knee injury which has limited his mobility. view comments First Published: July 29, 2025, 23:36 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath stated on Tuesday that the state has become a national leader in providing government jobs to medal-winning athletes. He made these remarks at the closing ceremony of the two-day state-level wrestling championship held at the Gorakhnath Temple during Nag Panchami celebrations. Adityanath mentioned that significant development in sports infrastructure has taken place in Uttar Pradesh over the past eight years, including the construction of playgrounds in villages, mini-stadiums at the block level, and full-fledged stadiums in districts. He added that the state has simultaneously introduced attractive cash rewards and employment opportunities for athletes excelling at both national and international levels. What Did Yogi Adityanath Say? 'Simultaneously, the state has introduced attractive cash rewards and employment opportunities for athletes excelling at the national and international levels," he said. Highlighting the state's achievements, Adityanath said: 'Over 500 medal-winning athletes who have brought laurels to India and Uttar Pradesh in events such as the Olympics, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, and World Championships have been given government jobs. 'UP leads the country in this regard," he said in an official statement. The Chief Minister also praised the contribution of Uttar Pradesh Police athletes in securing a third-place finish for India in the Police World Championship. Drawing from India's ancient ethos, he emphasised the importance of physical well-being and said sports are a highly effective means to ensure physical fitness, which should be integrated into daily life. He remarked that when young individuals pursue sports professionally, they not only uplift themselves but also bring pride to their family, society, and the nation. Adityanath acknowledged the long-standing tradition of organizing wrestling bouts at the Gorakhnath Temple during Nag Panchami, describing it as a centuries-old practice that now serves as a major platform for young wrestlers from across the state. He also watched the final bouts of the championship and distributed prizes to winners and runners-up across three categories.
