Beverley Knight excited at Wolverhampton stage return after 40 years
"It's my first time back on this stage - the last time I was here, I was about 12 years of age in West Side Story so I am exceptionally excited to be here playing my hometown," she told fans through the theatre's Facebook page.Knight, whose many West End performances include Memphis, The Drifters Girl, Sister Act and Sylvia - which won her an Olivier award - said to be cast as Sister Rosetta in the production was a "great honour".
The work tells the story of gospel and blues singer Rosetta Tharpe and her protégé, Marie Knight, played by Ntombizodwa Ndlovu, and features music celebrating Tharpe's legacy in the development of rock 'n' roll.
Tharpe herself performed at Wolverhampton's Civic Hall on 26 November 1957. When Beverley Knight was told the news by the theatre team that she would be bringing Rosetta's story back to the city 68 years later, she said: "That's before my parents even came to England, dad came in 1958, I can't believe it."I can't believe she came to my Wolverhampton. This is like gold to me, to know she came, it is everything."It means when we stand on stage and honour her it will resonate even more than it was going to in the first place."

Postnatal depression is a type of depression that affects parents after they have a baby. The major depression is triggered by childbirth but is much more severe than just the "baby blues". It can also occur following a miscarriage or stillbirth of a baby. Many women can feel emotional and anxious after the birth of their child, commonly referred to as the 'baby blues', this will only last for a few weeks after giving birth. If these symptoms start to last longer the NHS advises that you could be suffering with postnatal depression. The symptoms include but are not limited to: a persistent feeling of sadness, lack of enjoyment and loss of interest in the outside world, as well as your baby, and a lack of energy. These signs can build up gradually so a lot of people don't immediately identify that they have postnatal depression. A number of celebrity mums have opened up about suffering from postnatal depression following giving birth. Singer Adele has said that after the birth of her son Angelo she felt 'inadequate' and embarrassed to talk about how she was feeling. John Legend's wife and model Chrissy Teigen revealed she was diagnosed with postnatal depression in December after going into a downward spiral following the birth of her daughter Luna. Gwyneth Paltrow explained she was dogged by postnatal depression after son Moses was born in 2006. Loose Woman Stacey Solomon said she suffered from depression after the birth of her first son Zachary when she was just 18 years old. While her co-host Andrea McLean has also talked about the condition on the programme. Another famous face to talk about her experience is WAG Rebekah Vardy after she gave birth to son Finley with footballer husband Jamie Vardy. Kate Middleton visited Maurice Wohl Clinical Neuroscience Institute at King's College London to discuss postpartum depression with experts. After speaking to scientists, the Duchess reflected on the day; although she has never explicitly claimed to have suffered with it, she said: "There's an expectation you're going to be super happy all the time, and one in four of us aren't." Melanie Hughes, former Miss Wales and Corrie actress tragically passed away in October 2017 due to her heavy drinking, linked to her post natal depression. She then revealed her blooming bump, captioning the clip: "Surprise!" Anne-Marie later revealed how different her second pregnancy had been, sharing that she was no longer a vegetarian. The star said: "The other day I really wanted to eat a steak and I've never eaten steak in my whole life. "I've got gestational diabetes this time, though. "So yeah, that's annoying because I can't eat cereal or bread." Anne-Marie and her baby daddy Slowthai - real name Tyron Kaymone - secretly married in Las Vegas in the summer of 2022. 6 Anne-Marie and her husband welcomed their second child together Credit: Instagram 6 She said that she'd also been struggling with postnatal anxiety Credit: TIKTOK 6 The singer celebrated finally feeling herself again after a long battle Credit: Instagram/annemarie 6 She said that she was thinking of heading back on tour Credit: Instagram/annemarie
