‘I must unconditionally retract': Floyd Shivambu apologizes for drug use accusations against Ndhlela
Former uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party secretary-general Floyd Shivambu has retracted his statement accusing the party's spokesperson, Nhlamulo Ndhlela, of drug use after Ndhlela took legal action against him for defamation.
'You know, the other time I was not the national convener of the Mayibuye Process. Now, I got the benefit of benefiting from the leadership collective, in terms of how we should handle certain things,' Shivambu said during a press conference Friday.
'And part of the guidance, which I agreed with, is that I must unconditionally retract the statements about drug use and alcohol abuse of Nhlamulo Ndhlela - unconditionally.'
Shivambu used the opportunity to encourage South Africans to avoid drugs and alcohol, especially those serving in Parliament or leadership roles across political parties.
'Drugs will never build you with anything; you will make a lot of mistakes. But we really unconditionally retract those statements made there, under the guidance of the collective of the leadership,' he added.
Shivambu made the remarks while announcing members of the Mayibuye National Consultation Team and providing reflections on the progress of the Mayibuye Consultation Process, which he will lead.
His retraction comes after Ndhlela confirmed he is suing Shivambu for defamation, and is demanding R3 million for defamation.
In court papers shared on social media, Ndhlela said he filed charges at the Gauteng Local Division of the High Court.
IOL News previously reported that Ndhlela has publicly denied the allegations and published drug and alcohol screening results from Lancet Laboratories on his official X account.
The results indicated he tested negative for substances including alcohol, cannabis (THC), cocaine, amphetamines, opiates, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, methadone, methaqualone, and phencyclidine (PCP).
When contacted by IOL News, Lancet Laboratories said they could neither confirm nor deny the authenticity of the published test results.

'Risked it all': Where is Nandipha Magudumana's husband?
Nandipha Maguduman's recent court appearance has left many South Africans questioning how and why she gave up her glamorous and successful life – and her marriage – to embark on a criminal spree with fellow-accused, Thabo Bester. The alleged couple are currently facing charges of orchestrating his 2022 prison escape, defrauding the public, and violating multiple bodies. They appeared at the Free State High Court for a pre-trial hearing, which has been postponed to 19 September. Their trial is set to begin on 10 November at the Bloemfontein High Court. With all eyes on Nandipha, many want to know where her other half, Mr Magudumana, is. Despite being a married woman, the celebrity aesthetics doctor allegedly embarked on an affair with Thabo Bester while he was behind bars for a rape and murder conviction in 2012. At the time, Nandipha was married to Mkhuseli Magudumana, who is a paediatric medical doctor. The former couple shares two daughters together: Ayana and Aziza. But according to an affidavit, Nandipha claimed she was Bester's 'customary wife.' In a tweet posted following her arrest, former friend Redi Tlhabi claims the couple divorced in 2022. However, conflicting reports claim that Nandipha is still legally married to Mkhuseli Magudumana, who has kept a low profile since her arrest. Where is Nandipha Magudumana's husband Mkhuseli? Images via Instagram: @drnandi/ Showmax In Nandipha's 2024 bail application, she revealed that she is currently separated from her husband. In a sworn statement, Nandipha claimed that she met Thabo Bester at Wits University in 2006, where he allegedly studied theology. Official reports have revealed that Bester only has a grade 7 education. Nandipha also claimed that she and Bester began dating in 2017, and he paid lobola for her in 2020. While Nandipha Magudumana's frail appearance has concerned many South Africans, others have claimed that she is merely playing the public empathy card. Some even insinuated that she was no better than Thabo Bester himself. In court appearances, Nandipha Magudumana has appeared to read her Bible, pray, and sing, all while under the watchful eye of clicking cameras. Months after her arrest, the mom-of-two was in tears when her attorney claimed that Thabo Bester had 'forced' her to skip the country with her. In a letter written during Women's Month, Nandipha also claimed that she was abused by many men in her life, possibly including Bester. Minister of Police cautions against speculation over National Police Commissioner's alleged arrest
Siyabonga Sithole | Published 7 hours ago Police minister, Senzo Mchunu has cautioned South Africans against speculating over the alleged imminent arrest of National Police Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola. This comes after media reports indicated that the commissioner is being sought by law enforcement agencies over his alleged involvement in the alleged looting of the Crime Intelligence secret service account. Dumisani Khumalo, the head of the Crime Intelligence division within the South African Police Service (Saps) and seven others have been linked to the probe into the alleged looting of the Crime Intelligence secret service account as well as the appointment of 30-year-old Dineo Mokwele to an executive position within Crime Intelligence in April last year. It is reported that Mokwele was appointed to the position despite her having no policing capabilities, knowledge or skills. Khumalo and his co-accused, who were arrested on Thursday, are charged with four counts of corruption and fraud were released on bail following their appearance before the Pretoria Magistrates Court. Khumalo was arrested amid reports by authorities that his arrest comes after an 'extensive' investigation into the allegedly unlawful acquisition of two high-value properties. However, Masemola's involvement has been denied by the National Prosecuting Authority's (NPA) Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) which has indicated that it is not in the process of arresting or obtaining an arrest warrant for the National Police Commissioner. The reports had indicated that Masemola could be arrested for the irregular procurement of crime intelligence buildings worth more than R120 million. Speaking on Sunday police minister spokesperson, Kamogelo Mogotsi said the Mchunu had noted with concern media reports speculating about an imminent arrest of the National Commissioner of Police. "As the Ministry of Police, we have not been made aware of such impending arrest. We have also noted the response from the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) on this speculation. We plead with the media to avoid any speculation on this as speculation of this nature has an adverse impact on the named person and also has an effect of destabilising the work of the South African Police Service," Mogotsi said. In the weekend, IDAC spokesperson Henry Mamothame said:"We do not comment on matters under investigation. IDAC is not in the process of getting a warrant of arrest for the national police commissioner.' [email protected]

Book smart or street smart? Gayton qualification's revealed
Gayton McKenzie's rise from criminal to cabinet has been well documented. Like other ministers and MPs, the outspoken political leader's qualifications have been questioned and scrutinised by the public. The 51-year-old was sworn in as Minister of Sport, Art, and Culture in the Government of National Unity (GNU) last year. Like his past life of crime, Gayton McKenzie has been open and transparent about his lack of a post-matric qualification. In 2022, he tweeted: 'I have no problem being asked for my ID or where I am from. I was born in Pelenomi Hospital, and attended Olympia Primary School and Heatherdale Secondary School, all in Bloemfontein.' Gayton does, however, have multiple business interests and investments in various fields, including nightclubs, restaurants, hotels, and events venues, logistics and transport, imports, energy, mining, and farming. He jokingly added: 'I obtained a PHD ( Passed High School with Difficulty)'. What are Minister Gayton McKenzie's academic qualifications? Images via Facebook: While Gayton McKenzie has been accused of promoting the interests of coloured people, he has insisted that his political party, the Patriotic Alliance, represents all South Africans. Responding to public criticism this week, he posted on Facebook: 'The Patriotic Alliance stands for all races. 'Representation matters, we wanna see all races being treated equally and fairly'.
