Tourism slump continues - April data shows decline in visitor numbers

Latest tourism numbers point to a continuing decline in inbound visitors, a worrying trend for businesses in the sector.
According to the Central Statistics Office (CSO), over half a million tourists (528,100) completed trips to Ireland in April, spending approximately €375 million on their trips, excluding air fares.
But the headline number was down 4 per cent on the same month last year while spending decreased more than 10 per cent.
The figures continue a downward trend in foreign visitor numbers that first emerged last September, a pattern that has
raised some eyebrows in the trade
which has said it does not necessarily fit with on-the-ground experience.

Global tourist markets have struggled to recover from the pandemic and uncertainty around US trade policy and the associated volatility on stock markets may now be playing into the trend.
Tourism is one of Ireland's largest indigenous industries, employing 257,900 people.
The CSO noted 'the largest contingent' of visitors came from Britain (41 per cent) followed by visitors from the United States (18 per cent).
The main reason for travelling to Ireland was for holiday (40 per cent) followed by visiting friends or family (38 per cent).
More visitors stayed with family or in their own property (42 per cent) than in any other accommodation type, and the typical visit lasted 6.5 nights, the CSO indicated.
A geographical breakdown of the figures showed that visitors from Britain were up 2 per cent compared with April 2024, while visitors from all other areas were down.
Visitors from continental Europe were down 8 per cent while visitors from North America were down 1 per cent.
When compared with April 2023, visitors from Britain were up 13 per cent while those from the US, continental Europe and the rest of the world were up 8 per cent, 28 per cent and 26 per cent respectively.
Visitors from Britian accounted for €96 million (26 per cent) of total €375 million spend, Continental Europe for €134 million (36 per cent), North America for €121 million (32 per cent), and visitors from the rest of the world for €25 million (7 per cent).

European and US shares advanced at the start of a busy week on the corporate earnings and policy fronts, with the European Central Bank's governing council set to meet on Wednesday and Thursday. On Wall Street, the main indices hit record highs on big gains from megacap stocks. DUBLIN Outperforming many European indices, the ISEQ closed up 1.3 per cent on Monday, led higher by a surge in Ryanair's shares. The airline advanced by 5.7 per cent to €24.44 per share after reporting that its profits more than doubled to €820 million in the three months to the end of June. Ryanair chief executive Michael O'Leary said the carrier's fares had benefited substantially from having a full Easter holiday in April. READ MORE Bank shares were mixed, with AIB edging slightly higher to €6.58 per share while Bank of Ireland dipped by 0.3 per cent to €11.81 per share. Shares in hotel group Dalata slid 0.3 per cent to €6.37 per share. LONDON UK shares inched higher, supported by industrial miners that jumped on hopes of stimulus from China. The benchmark FTSE 100 index closed up by 0.2 per cent, and the domestic-focused FTSE 250 added 0.5 per cent. Led by Antofagasta, which jumped 4.7 per cent, mining stocks were among the biggest gainers on the session. Anglo American jumped 3.3 per cent, with Glencore advancing by 3 per cent and Rio Tinto adding 2.7 per cent. The move came on foot of China's promise to stabilise its industrial growth, and on hopes for more stimulus from the world's largest commodity consumer. BP rose 0.26 per cent after naming former CRH chief executive Albert Manifold as its next chairman. Activist Elliot Investment Management said it would work with the Irishman to 'urgently' address shortcomings at the oil major. Banks ended the day well. NatWest finished 1.4 per cent higher, with Lloyds up 1.3 per cent and HSBC edged 1 per cent higher. EUROPE European shares were softer as markets await developments in trade talks between the EU and the US. The blue-chip Stoxx 50 index fell by 0.3 per cent while the pan-European Stoxx 600 dipped by just over 0.1 per cent. Shares in Stellantis jumped by 1.5 per cent despite the Fiat and Peugeot-maker reporting a net loss of €2.3 billion for the first half of the year. The company also said it would take a €300 million hit from the impact of Trump's tariffs, including the cost of lost production. Other automakers also jumped, with BMW up 1.1 per cent, Volkswagen up 0.6 per cent and Mercedes-Benz ahead by 0.4 per cent. Also on the earnings front, Portugal's Galp Energia rose 1.7 per cent after raising its core profit target and announcing that it plans to find a partner to develop a promising oil discovery off Namibia. NEW YORK The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq reached new record highs on Monday, bolstered by gains in megacaps as investors geared up for the week's big tech earnings, while the prospects of fresh trade deals also boosted sentiment. The S&P 500 advanced by 0.6 per cent, while the Nasdaq Composite jumped 0.5 per cent and the Dow Jones Industrial Average moved 0.5 per cent higher to just 1.28 per cent below its all-time high. Verizon gained 4.1 per cent after boosting its annual profit forecast. The stock also drove up the communications sector, which emerged as the top gainer among other sectors. The spotlight was on Google-parent Alphabet and electric-vehicle maker Tesla, whose results this week will kick off the 'Magnificent Seven' earnings parade, and could set the tone for Wall Street. Tourists at the Cliffs of Moher are breaking walls and climbing protective fences to access sections of a dangerous cliff-edge trail which have been closed since last August following two deaths. Large stretches of the Cliffs of Moher Walking Trail were closed when a Sport Ireland audit highlighted significant safety issues on the 19km route in Co Clare. The route, which normally attracts 400,000 visitors annually, is owned by 36 local farmers and is bisected by the Cliffs of Moher Visitors' Experience, which is owned and operated by Clare County Council. Clare Local Development Company chief executive Dóirín Graham said managing a partly closed trail with significant safety hazards was proving challenging. READ MORE 'People still climb over fences, people pull down fences and walls, so we are constantly trying to repair fences and remind people that they should not be on that section of the trail,' she said. 'Thankfully there has been no incidents so far. Because of the nature of the trail, people can walk across [private] land and access the trail at many different points. 'People might have travelled a distance to see the cliffs and don't want to listen. People can still see them, there are still good sections of the cliffs visible, through the visitors' centre, that people can see. People can still get that cliffs experience.' She said the Department of Rural and Community Development had supported the CLDC with funding to put someone in place to manage the trail on a part-time basis, 'but he can't stop people climbing over fences. There is an amount of that going on'. Since its development in 2012, the trail has been managed by CLDC under the national walks scheme, with farmers receiving a small payment for access to their land. CLDC is managing the closed and the open sections of the route, but this responsibility will transfer to the county council on September 1st. Following a review of the management plan for the trail, which was instigated before two people died in accidents there last year, it was decided that the council would take over as its management agency. The local authority has been in negotiations with farmers and Clare IFA for several months, with no agreement yet reached about the future of the grade-five difficulty walk. The council has erected barriers and warning signs where the Cliffs of Moher Experience interacts with the closed trail, but has confirmed regular incursions take place. 'There is evidence of regular breaches of the barrier on the closed section on the northern side of the trail. There are local penetrations of the trail on the southern side which are equally being monitored and managed by CLDC,' a council spokesperson said. The closed sections of the trail cannot be reopened until significant safety works are undertaken, with the southern half of the trail unlikely to be fully reopened for years. The area is a nesting ground for protected birds and is a Special Area of Conservation, meaning work can only take place during the winter months. No work can be started, however, until an agreement is reached between the council and landowners. 'Talks are progressing with the landowners and landowner representatives on the northern section of the Cliffs of Moher Coastal Walk with a view to spending approved ORIS [Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme] funding,' the council spokesperson said. Local farmers will shortly receive their last payment under the national walks scheme, and will not receive any further payments until an agreement is reached with the local authority. 'The landowners are very committed to keeping the Cliffs of Moher Walking Trail open,' Tom Lane of Clare IFA said. 'We are fully aware of the benefits in kind to Clare tourism and the important role it plays in the overall national tourism industry.' Despite these challenges and the bad weather, thousands of tourists walked sections of the trail last weekend, with several making their way into the closed sections. Ollie Gleeson has been running guided walks on the trail for the past five years and employs 12 people. 'It is operationally very difficult. We are able to keep going, but it is a challenge,' he said. 'This trail brought connectivity from one of Ireland's busiest tourists attractions to two local villages [Doolin and Liscannor]. The amount of money that the trail has brought to local villages has been massive. 'When it is open, it does something massive for Doolin, Liscannor, Lisdoonvarna and Ballyvaughan. The trail isn't just about the guides, it is a massive part of the local economy.' In early May last year, a Belgian medical student fell from the 700ft cliffs while she was walking with a group. More than two months later a Chinese boy, who was in Ireland with his parents, also fell to his death from the trail.

DCC applies for court approval for €1bn capital reduction

Stock market-listed conglomerate DCC has applied to the Commercial Court for approval of a reduction in its share capital by nearly €1 billion following the sale of its healthcare division. DCC plc is the parent of DCC Energy, which specialises in the sale, marketing and distribution of clean energy solutions, and of DCC Technology, a specialist distribution partner for global technology and appliance brands and customers. It was also the parent of DCC Healthcare, a provider of high quality medical devices and other healthcare products, and also partners with brands to create and manufacture health and beauty products, until it decided to sell that division. A large proportion of the income of DCC group, which is London-listed and Dublin-headquartered, is generated in the UK. READ MORE In November, DCC announced it would focus on the energy division and began preparations for the sale of the healthcare division, chief executive Donal Murphy said in an affidavit. In April, an agreement was entered into to sell the division and in May it announced it intended to return £800 million (€923 million) to shareholders, he said, through a reduction in share capital. Mr Murphy said the capital reduction and in seeking to have it entered into the fast track Commercial Court, are a step in the larger process of focusing the business of the company on the energy sector and deploying the proceeds of the sale of the healthcare division for the benefit of the shareholders. It is envisaged the transaction will be completed by September. Lyndon MacCann SC, who made the application to Mr Justice Mark Sanfey on Monday, said he was looking for a date for hearing of the matter during the court vacation in August. The judge said while it was not normal to deal with such applications in August, he understood the urgency of the matter. He said he would be writing up judgments in August and he would hear it during that week.
