Israel Adesanya: Charles Oliveira 'gets touched too much,' Ilia Topuria knocks him out
Israel Adesanya is concerned with Charles Oliveira's striking defense against Ilia Topuria.
Oliveira (35-10 MMA, 23-10 UFC) meets Topuria (16-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) for the vacant lightweight title in Saturday's UFC 317 main event (pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+) at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Oliveira has been knocked down in his title fights against Michael Chandler, Dustin Poirier, and Justin Gaethje before rallying to get the finish. Adesanya isn't sure "Do Bronx" survives the power of Topuria, who's coming off back-to-back knockouts of Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway.
"To beat two of the greatest featherweights of all time, back-to-back, it's hard to doubt a guy like that again," Adesanya said of Topuria on his YouTube channel. "(Oliveira) gets caught too much for my liking, that's the thing. If he wants to go forward straight away, he's going to get caught. I just see Ilia as too sharp with the hands, man. He's too sharp with the hands."
Adesanya would like to see Oliveira mix in his grappling to help open up his striking.
"Charles needs to feint or just find a way to cause doubt in Ilia's mind, and also good footwork, because I don't think he's going to be moving forward for long," Adesanya said. "He's going to have to move backwards, and when that happens, he has to use good footwork to get back to the center, and then attack from there.
"(He needs to) shoot sometimes and then break away. Find a way to disengage, but just get that in his mind. I don't want to doubt Charles because he's illuminated by a great power, and he's just proven himself over and over again. ... Let's see what the grappling is about. Test it, because no one's tested Topuria's grappling quite well yet."
The former UFC middleweight champion ultimately picked Topuria to win.
"In this fight, I'm going to go Ilia Topuria, and I'm going to go by knockout," Adesanya said. "I don't know what round, but for me it's just because Charles, he gets touched too much for my liking. I just think Ilia will find the shot, I think pretty early if Charles decides to just be aggressive like he says and push forward. And then if he gets hurt, Ilia will find that shot again."

NBA free agency: Who are the biggest names on the market?
The NBA free agency period has officially started with several notable names available. All teams were able to begin negotiations with free agents who had finished out the season on their respective rosters since June 23. Now, teams will have the opportunity to reach out to all other free agent players as early as Monday afternoon. Several players have already avoided the free agency process and reportedly worked out deals to remain with their current teams. That group includes guard Kyrie Irving (Dallas Mavericks), guard Fred VanVleet (Houston Rockets) and center Naz Reid (Minnesota Timberwolves). Forward John Collins has already exercised his player option to return to the Utah Jazz. Player movement will continue to be reported over the next week, but all free agent contracts will not become official until Sunday, July 6, at 12:01 p.m. ET. Here are some of the biggest names expected to be on the free agent market: NBA power rankings: How all 30 teams stack up after 2025 NBA Draft LeBron James, Forward, Player option There was brief chatter about what's next for LeBron James after the season concluded for the Los Angeles Lakers, but there's no expectation that he will retire or put on a different uniform next season. The 41-year-old currently has a $52.6 million player option for the 2025-26 season that he's likely to opt into, according to ESPN's Sham Charania. James Harden, Guard, Player option Much like LeBron, James Harden has a $36.3 million player option that would allow him to return to the Los Angeles Clippers for the upcoming season. Harden was named to the All-NBA Third Team and was selected for his 11th All-Star game. Myles Turner, Center, Unrestricted free agent Turner's season just came to an end after falling short with the Indiana Pacers in Game 7 of the NBA Finals. While Turner is likely to receive interest from several suitors, the Pacers likely have the advantage by having had a few days to negotiate with the big man exclusively in recent days. Julius Randle, Forward, Player option Julius Randle can return to the Minnesota Timberwolves roster with the $30.9 player option he has available to him. If he decides to return, it would help keep a similar lineup in Minnesota that just played in the Western Conference Finals. Jonathan Kuminga, Forward, Restricted Kuminga will have the opportunity to test the market and sign an offer sheet with any team, but it will be up to the Golden State Warriors to decide to match the terms of any offer he agrees to. Kuminga started 10 of the 47 games he played in for the Warriors in this past season, averaging 15.3 points and 4.6 rebounds in 24.3 minutes per game. He was tendered with a $7.9 million qualifying offer on Saturday, according to ESPN's Ohm Youngmisuk.

Ilia Topuria KOs Charles Oliveira at UFC 317, Wins Lightweight Belt to Become Two-Division Champion (Video)
Ilia Topuria KOs Charles Oliveira at UFC 317, Wins Lightweight Belt to Become Two-Division Champion (Video) originally appeared on Athlon Sports. In a historic night at UFC 317, Ilia Topuria solidified his place among MMA's elite by knocking out Charles Oliveira in the first round to claim the vacant lightweight title. The undefeated Spaniard, moving up from featherweight, needed just over two minutes to dismantle the former Brazilian champion, becoming the UFC's 10th two-division titleholder in stunning fashion. Advertisement The T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas erupted as Topuria's pinpoint striking proved too much for Oliveira, who had never been finished so quickly in his career. From the opening bell, Topuria showcased the boxing mastery that has defined his meteoric rise. Oliveira attempted an early takedown but was shrugged off by Topuria, who then hip-tossed the Brazilian to the canvas in a display of surprising grappling dominance. Back on the feet, Topuria's jab began to find its mark, setting up the fight-ending sequence. A crushing overhand right followed by a left hook sent Oliveira crashing to the mat, and follow-up hammerfists sealed the deal at 2:27 of Round 1, leaving no doubt about the new king at 155 pounds. Advertisement Here is the finishing sequence: The victory marks Topuria's second UFC title in just 16 months, having previously dethroned Alexander Volkanovski for the featherweight strap before vacating it to pursue lightweight gold. His knockout of Oliveira joins a highlight reel that already includes his aforementioned knockout over Volkanovski, and his iconic third-round stoppage of Max Holloway—the first time Holloway had ever been knocked out in MMA. At 28 years old, Topuria's precision, power, and fight IQ may make him the sport's best pound-for-pound fighter today. "El Matador" silenced doubters with a performance that echoed his pre-fight confidence. Advertisement Topuria also fulfilled his prediction when he said in an interview with Ariel Helwani, 'I'm going to finish him in the first round.' For Oliveira, the loss is a brutal setback in his long and storied career. 'Do Bronx,' who holds the record for most UFC finishes, had no answer for Topuria's speed and power. Topuria's win sparks immediate speculation about his next move. With Islam Makhachev vacating the lightweight belt to chase welterweight gold, potential matchups against contenders like Justin Gaethje or Arman Tsarukyan loom. He also faced off against Paddy Pimblett in the post-fight interview, which is not the most compelling matchup, but it is the fight that the UFC might book in order to boost ratings.
