I got my boyfriend a job at my work — then he dumped me
'We were working together and living together, but no one knew – then, he broke up with me. Twice.'
The 25-year-old lives in Lisbon and realised that helping her partner out had really backfired.
'The second time we broke up, it was for good. Now I'm navigating a situation where we are no longer dating but we're still colleagues a year later. It's terrible,' she added.
I tried to hide the shock on my face, as Sophie told her story. She was spilling her dilemma on the latest episode of Just Between Us, Metro's hot new sex and relationships podcast.
But my co-host Diana Vickers and I struggled to keep a straight face as she explained that his reason for breaking up with her was wanting a fresh start; new job, new city, new girlfriend.
'He told me he needed to find himself and he wasn't happy in his corporate job or routine, so I expected him to leave the job and move to the other side of the world, but no, the only thing he changed about his life was breaking up with me,' Sophie said.

Oh, and he dumped her on holiday – both times. While breaking up with someone isn't a crime – you'd think that you'd try and do it when you aren't stuck in a hotel room together.
Sophie actually has a new boyfriend now, but she's struggling with being haunted by her ex every day as she sends Outlook calendar invites, so she came to us for advice.
She's wondering how to truly find her peace after the relationship and how she can work through her last frustrations from how badly he handled the breakup.
Now, her dilemma isn't surprising, given that 44% of people know a co-worker who has had an affair at work, and that a fifth of marriages or civil partnerships start in the office – but that doesn't make it any easier when it doesn't work out.
It's tricky, because Sophie doesn't have the luxury of the delete and block method where you avoid seeing or hearing from them IRL or on social media.
So, step number one, which is a tip from dating coach Matthew Hussey I picked up, is to change your ex's name on any forms of communication you have to have on your phone to something that reminds you you've moved on.
A woman who Matthew coached changed her ex's name in her phone to 'Done', so whenever he popped up, it reinforced they were over and done with.
It may sound petty and small, but trust me, it works a treat. It gives you that satisfaction of knowing that chapter is finished with.
Sophie also questioned if she should tell any colleagues they have had a relationship and how badly it ended.
'Part of me, after my third Aperol Spritz at corporate drinks, really wants to let it out' she said.
It was a firm no from me. She's done so brilliantly at keeping it professional up until now and it would likely give him more satisfaction knowing you're still thinking about him.
Not to mention, from a HR perspective it could get pretty contentious, and she loves her job, so it's not worth letting him jeopardise that.
Instead, Sophie can take comfort in knowing that yes, she can't escape him, but he can't escape her either and he'll likely be watching as she's moving on with her new handsome beau (who thankfully doesn't work at the company) – that's penalty enough, surely.
She gushed about her new partner who she's still in the honeymoon phase with, saying: 'My new guy is a bit older than me and he's treating me like I was never treated before – I feel loved in a way I can't even describe.' More Trending
Now that's some good karma there for you. Since he's such a catch, Diana and I suggested another petty but satisfying way to show you've moved on.
'You could get your handsome man to come and pick you for lunch,' I said. It's simple but effective – close that chapter once and for all.
But Sophie's dilemma isn't the only tea on the latest Just Between Us episode – Diana and I talk all things heartbreak, why it's not a 'you' problem when your ex shows up for someone in ways they never did for you, and whether we've ever crossed lines in the workplace.

Celebrity SAS star Rebecca Loos' affair with David Beckham explained
Rebecca Loos is set to appear on Celebrity SAS but her rise to fame came on the back of her alleged affair with David Beckham so here we take a look at the affair scandal in detail Back in 2004, Rebecca Loos was the most sought after person in the UK after she revealed that she'd had an alleged affair with none other than David Beckham. At the time, both David and Victoria Beckham denied her allegations but the former personal assistant stood her ground and exposed their alleged four-month affair to the press, for the entire world to read. Now, the 48 year old mum of two is set to appear on Celebrity SAS Who Dares Wins and yet again her alleged affair with the former England footballer has become a subject of discussion once again. Rebecca will join Louie Spence, X Factor star Lucy Spraggan and Adebayo 'The Beast' Akinfenwa for the military inspired reality TV show. It comes after Cat Deeley found moving back to the UK 'really hard' before split from Patrick Kielty. At the time, Rebecca told Sky that David was an "amazing lover" and "they couldn't keep their hands off each other." She explained: "We were just locked into each other all night, conversation-wise, other people noticed… we just connected. I think the chemistry between David and me was so strong… people were aware and they weren't very happy." She added: "He knows how to please. He's not afraid of a woman's body. He seems to know what he's doing" Rebecca faced backlash for selling her story but in 2021 the reality TV star reflected on why she made that decision that caused a huge media storm. She explained to Closer: "I just felt the need to be truthful. Whether you've done something that's right or wrong, it was kind of just eating me up. I was living a lie and keeping secrets." She continued: "Max Clifford [former celebrity agent] said to me he'd negotiate an exclusive with the newspaper and that if I was willing to tell absolutely all the juicy details, then I would get up to five or six hundred thousand pounds. Ridiculous money." According to reports she told the Daily Mail: "People said I was mad. Who was this guy? I hardly knew him, what on earth was I doing? But look at everything I have now, I am so happy. I have no regrets, I am so happy with my life now." She reportedly said: "But many people are so afraid of change. Change is good, change is how you learn, people should just f**king go for it. I like the way my life has taken me. If I hadn't been famous, I would not have been invited on the TV show where I met my husband, Sven and had my lovely boys. I would not have had the life I have now." Rebecca met her husband Sven Christjar Skaiaa, who is a medic, during filming 71 Degrees North. The couple married in 2012 and share two children together. The family now live in Norway and she works as a youga teacher while not on TV. In a statement released at the time, David said: "During the past few months, I have become accustomed to reading more and more ludicrous stories about my private life. The simple truth is that I am very happily married. I have a wonderful wife and two very special kids. There is nothing any third party can do to change these facts." Victoria had remained silent in 2004 but three years later she admitted: "I'm not going to lie. It was a really tough time. No one said marriage was going to be easy. Yes, there have been bumps along the road. But the fact is we've come out of everything we've been through stronger and happier."

Maya Jama 'is planning to follow in Molly-Mae Hague's footsteps as she plots a major new career move'
Love Island host Maya Jama could soon be lighting up screens in a whole new way - by launching her own YouTube series. The TV presenter, 30, is said to be eyeing up a major career shift that would see her dive into the influencer world and cash in on her huge online following. Maya has reportedly been taking inspiration from the likes of Molly-Mae Hague, who's made a fortune turning her brand into a business on the social media platform. The star even dropped a hint to fans online, recently posting a story calling out 'lurking likers' a nod to the silent audience already keeping tabs on her content. Following a massive 115 million views in just a month - including over 10 million on a holiday carousel with her Manchester City star boyfriend Ruben Dias - the presenter took to social media to share the impressive figures with her 3.2 million followers. She didn't hold back either, calling out the silent onlookers who scroll without engaging, joking she might need to 'start a YouTube so I can convert the watchers to money at least'. Daily Mail have contacted Maya's representatives for comment. Maya and Ruben, 30, have been dating for several months and have enjoyed numerous romantic holidays together. It is now thought the pair are taking the next step in their relationship as things are getting serious between the couple. It has been claimed that Maya is eyeing up splitting her time between London and Manchester to spend more time with Ruben. Ruben's commitment to Maya early on in their romance reportedly secured things for the couple and they are even said to be looking at moving in together. A source told The Sun: 'Ruben made sure from the start that his intentions with Maya were clear, he knows he's struck gold and wants to make sure Maya knows how seriously he feels about her. 'Being honest and open about what he wants from their future was the secret weapon in securing a future with Maya. 'Maya's work, home and friends are in London so she doesn't want to leave there entirely, but is considering going between there and Manchester.' The news comes after the TV presenter shared her impressive figures on her Instagram, calling out the silent watchers who look at what she's posting, but don't engage Maya is currently busy splitting her time between Mallorca and London as she hosts live from the Love Island villa and presents spin-off chat show Aftersun. Amid her busy Love Island filming schedule, Maya and Ruben have still found to enjoy some sun-soaked trips and recently jetted off to Ibiza together. Maya shared an array of loved-up snaps of the pair of them as she documented their budding romance after going Instagram official in May. Every inch the supportive girlfriend, the TV host has been seen at multiple football games over the last few months to watch Ruben live in action for Man City. Footage of the pair last month showed them with their arms around each other before he leant into her neck for a peck. Ruben tried to fly under the radar and keep a low profile as he stepped out in casual clothes and a cap. A source told The Sun: 'Maya and Ruben seemed very close, very loved up and were clearly very comfortable with each other. 'They were chatting to others around them but gravitated back to each other. They seem very happy with each other.' It was the first time they were seen in public since they were thought to have started dating - though Maya had hinted at the romance by sharing snaps of flowers she was sent. They were first linked in November of last year, four months after Maya and Stormzy had announced their split.

‘10 years after Poldark, I hope my brooding period drama fills the void'
Sam Claflin has been a familiar face on our screens for over a decade. He won the hearts of Hunger Games fans as Finnick Odair in the dystopian film franchise, left cinemagoers heartbroken opposite Emilia Clarke in Me Before You, and gave a sinister performance as real-life fascist politician Oswald Mosley in Peaky Blinders. Now, the 39-year-old is playing arguably his most vengeful role yet, becoming the latest actor to embody Alexandre Dumas' legendary literary character Edmond Dantès in The Count of Monte Cristo. Metro recently spoke to Sam about portraying the compelling character, remarking how ever since Poldark began 10 years ago, it's felt as though there's been a gap on TV for a new brooding period drama… and perhaps The Count of Monte Cristo could fill that void. 'I definitely hope so. I know there have been shows like Bridgerton that have brought a fresh edge to the genre, but I think there's always an audience for these classic retellings,' he responds. 'As a kid who grew up watching The Three Musketeers and being such a fan of Alexander Dumas' previous works, that world and that era is strangely exciting and almost fantastical, because it feels much before our time. So it almost feels like a history lesson.' It was apparently evident during our Zoom call how big a fan I am of dark period dramas, as he then added: 'You can only hope that audiences are craving as much as you seem to be, but I definitely feel like it has all the elements that could, could make it a must-watch.' Like us, Sam couldn't believe it when he took stock of the fact that Poldark – which shot Aidan Turner to a stratospheric level of fame as the scything army captain Ross Poldark – is 10 years old. 'I definitely am like you. I love historical drama. But I guess we haven't had that much,' he says. 'I remember when it was all the rage, it put Aidan Turner on the map. It was a great series.' Edmond Dantès has been depicted multiple times in films and TV shows over the years, with actors who've taken on the role including the likes of John Gilbert, Richard Chamberlain and Jim Caviezel. The character embarks on a warpath for revenge when he's wrongfully imprisoned for several years and separated from the love of his life. When Edmond returns to society, he's transformed into the Count of Monte Cristo and is a shadow of the man he was before. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video 'It's known as a classic for a reason,' Sam shares. 'The characters are so rich and complex, and that's not just Edmond's character, but every single character within the story, the subplots and sidelines. 'It's just an incredibly authentic insight into what life was like back then in France, the politics, as much as seeing how the nobility lived.' In recent years, some of Sam's biggest projects have included starring as rockstar Billy Dunne in Daisy Jones and the Six, and as Sherlock's brother Mycroft Holmes in Enola Holmes, alongside Millie Bobby Brown and Henry Cavill. He has no shortage of iconic roles under his belt – but for him, The Count of Monte Cristo was a 'dream job'. 'There's so many layers to him', he explains. 'The whole story is him pretending or acting as another character, even though he's someone else – it was quite a head spin. Am I Edmond, or am I still the Count of Monte Cristo? It was a challenge, but one that I was very excited to get my teeth stuck into.' In the early stages of his career, Sam admits that he tended to go for roles that he felt would take him 'as far away from myself as possible', so that he could 'hide behind the characters that I was playing and disappear in them'. 'Or at least thought I was trying to do my best to do that,' he shares. 'But actually, and this is me looking back in reflection, I feel that it loses some of its authenticity when you're completely hiding.' So in recent years, he's tried to lean more towards characters that he can relate to on a deeper level, or who have had similar experiences to him, or someone that he knows. More Trending 'I don't know anyone who has been as vengeful as Edmond Dantès. But I definitely found myself more recently being more drawn to roles that are modern-day and men rather than boys, if that makes sense,' he states. 'Up until recently, I kept feeling like scripts were coming across my desk looking for someone in their mid-20s who is a boy turning into a man. I'm like, no, I'm 39, those stories have got to stop. 'I have new strings to my bow. I'm a dad, and I've lived a life and navigated a lot of things that I feel I can bring to my art or storytelling that will feel authentic and real rather than pretending.'
