"Require some more time in the ICU": AJ Hospital doctor gives health update of crew members rescued in MV Wan Hai 503 ship explosion
According to plastic surgeon Dr Dinesh Kadam, a Chinese national with 40 per cent burns and an Indonesian citizen in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) are being closely monitored. Both patients require more time in the ICU, whereas the condition of the other four crew members is stable.
One of the crew members will be discharged from the hospital, whereas others will stay because of the impact and facial burns caused due to the accident.
'A Chinese national with 40% burns and an Indonesian national are in ICU and are being closely monitored. Their vitals are stable though they require some more time in the ICU... All the other four are stable and one of them is being discharged while the others will stay in the hospital as they have some impact and facial burns', Dr Dinesh Kadam said in a self-made video.
The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) on Wednesday winched five salvage team members and an aircrew diver onto the burning Singaporean container vessel MV Wan Hai 503 to facilitate towing operations.
According to an official release from the Ministry of Defence, the vessel, which caught fire off the Kerala coast on June 9, continues to drift south-east within India's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), approximately 42 nautical miles from Beypore, Kerala.
The vessel is carrying 1.2 lakh metric tons of fuel and hundreds of containers, including hazardous cargo, posing a serious risk to the marine environment and regional shipping routes.
'Intensive firefighting efforts by ICG have significantly reduced visible flames, with only smoke now seen across the cargo holds and bays. However, the fire remains active in the inner decks and near fuel tanks,' the release stated.
'Five ICG ships, two Dornier aircraft, and a helicopter are engaged in the ongoing firefighting mission, supported by two vessels from the Directorate General of Shipping. A salvage team appointed by the ship's owners is working in coordination with ICG, and the Indian Air Force has been requested for additional aerial support,' it added.
With the fire yet to be fully extinguished, efforts to establish a towline and pull the vessel away from the coast are underway to prevent a potential ecological disaster. The situation remains critical and is being monitored continuously. (ANI)

South Korea becomes the fourth country in the Indo-Pacific to operate the P-8 Poseidon. Which country has acquired P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft? Earlier on July 3, the Republic of Korea Navy (South Korean Navy) officially began operating its squadron of P-8 Poseidon maritime surveillance aircraft, as per a report by Yonhap News Agency. South Korea received all six aircraft from Boeing by June 2024, which was followed by a year-long training period for pilots and mechanics, which included flight training. With the training completed, all six aircraft are now deemed operationally ready to perform maritime patrol, anti-submarine warfare, and anti-ship operations. With threats rising from North Korea, South Korea purchased the P-8A Poseidon aircraft to transition from its aging fleet of P-3 patrol planes. The P-8A offers superior performance, a higher maximum speed, and superior operational range compared to the P-3. The P-8A is recognized worldwide as the best 'submarine hunter' and has the capability to conduct critical missions such as anti-submarine warfare, anti-ship warfare, and maritime reconnaissance with a high degree of efficiency. According to the Yonhap News Agency, the P-8A Poseidon can fly at a maximum speed of 907 kilometers per hour and is considerably faster than the P-3's maximum speed of 749 kph. The aircraft is capable of, operating a wide array of weapons (anti-ship guided missiles and torpedoes). Thus, it can strike surface targets and submarines. Importantly, the P-8A Poseidon can deploy about 120 sonobuoys to detect, identify and track enemy submarines and, thus, provides enormous anti-submarine warfare capability. During the aircraft's induction last year, former South Korean Defense Minister Shin Won-sik boldly stated that the P-8A Poseidon will turn enemy submarines into scrap. For them, the sea will become a living hell. South Korea plans to field the aircraft to closely observe its main security concern, North Korea, as well as the growing strategic challenge of China. Several other Indo-Pacific states, India, Australia, and New Zealand, have also purchased the P-8A Poseidon from the U.S. to upgrade their surveillance capacity and response, amid the growing military assertiveness of China in the region. India has utilized these aircraft for the observation of Chinese activity. In addition to maritime surveillance aircraft, P-8I aircraft have been used for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions on land. For instance, Indian authorities used the P-8I during the 2020 Galwan Valley clash and in the 2017 Doklam standoff to monitor Chinese troop movements. Going by the media reports, the P-8I provided near real-time images and data of Chinese military movements along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). Beyond bilateral responsibilities, P-8 operators are increasing their cooperation across the Indo-Pacific region. In crisis, these nations utilize their intelligence sharing to link mutual capabilities and ensure collective knowledge on their respective capabilities.

Delhi: Fire breaks out in Karol Bagh's commercial building
ANI 05 Jul 2025, 00:34 GMT+10 New Delhi [India], July 4 (ANI): A fire broke out in a Vishal Mega Mart in Delhi's Karol Bagh area, fire officials said on Friday evening. According to the Delhi Fire Service, 13 fire tenders reached at the spot to douse the blaze. The officials informed that dousing operations were underway and efforts were being made to extinguish the fire that had broken out at Vishal Mega Mart. As of now, there are no reports of any injuries in the incident. Earlier, a fire broke out at the trauma centre of Delhi's All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Thursday. According to an official, an electric transformer at the AIIMS Trauma Centre in the national capital caught fire. The fire was doused after the fire department dispatched at least eight fire tenders to the spot. No injuries have been reported in the incident. (ANI)

Four Tamil Nadu fishermen return home after being rescued by Sri Lankan Navy
Ramanathapuram (Tamil Nadu) [India], July 4 (ANI): Four fishermen from Dhanushkodi in Tamil Nadu's Ramanathapuram district, who were rescued by the Sri Lankan Navy after their boat capsized mid-sea, returned safely to their hometown on Thursday. According to officials, the incident took place on June 25, when the four fishermen -- N Nambu Prakash (23), N Nambu Gunalan (25), K Nambu (24), and S Sathyaraj (24), all residents of Puthuroda in the Rameswaram island area -- ventured out to fish in the Gulf of Mannar in a traditional country boat. Around 4 am, strong winds and rough sea conditions caused their boat to overturn and sink between Dhanushkodi and Thalaimannar, leaving them stranded in open waters. The Sri Lankan Navy responded promptly to the emergency and rescued the stranded fishermen, later handing them over to the Thalaimannar police. Though no charges were filed, the fishermen were held in custody for several days before being transported to Colombo. On Wednesday, they were flown from Colombo to Chennai. Fisheries Department officials received the fishermen in Chennai and arranged their return to Rameswaram by private vehicle. Upon arrival, they were reunited with their families on Thursday. The survivors expressed gratitude to the Sri Lankan Navy for saving their lives and enabling their safe return. Earlier on Tuesday, India and Pakistan exchanged the lists of civilian prisoners and fishermen in each other's custody through diplomatic channels simultaneously in New Delhi and Islamabad. Under the provisions of the 2008 Bilateral Agreement on Consular Access, such lists are exchanged annually on January 1 and July 1. Pakistan has been requested to ensure the 'safety, security and welfare' of all civilian prisoners and fishermen, pending their release and repatriation to India, the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.' India has shared the names of 382 civilian prisoners and 81 fishermen in its custody, who are Pakistani or are believed to be Pakistani. Similarly, Pakistan has shared the names of 53 civilian prisoners and 193 fishermen in its custody, who are Indian or are believed to be Indian,' it said. The Government of India has called for the 'early release and repatriation' of civilian prisoners and fishermen currently in Pakistani custody, especially those who have already completed their prison sentences.'Pakistan has been asked to expedite the release and repatriation of 159 Indian fishermen and civilian prisoners, who have completed their sentence,' the MEA said. In addition, Pakistan has been asked to provide immediate consular access to the 26 civilian prisoners and fishermen in Pakistan's custody, it said. 'The Government of India has called for the early release and repatriation of civilian prisoners, fishermen along with their boats, and missing Indian defence personnel from Pakistan's custody. Pakistan has been asked to expedite the release and repatriation of 159 Indian fishermen and civilian prisoners, who have completed their sentence. In addition, Pakistan has been asked to provide immediate consular access to the 26 civilian prisoners and fishermen in Pakistan's custody, who are believed-to-be-Indian and have not been provided consular access so far,' the statement read. India also requested Pakistan to confirm the nationality of 80 believed-to-be-Pakistani prisoners and fishermen currently in India's custody, as their repatriation was pending due to a lack of nationality verification from Pakistani authorities.
