Untitled 1 from the series 'After Magdalene' (2006-2009)
The exhibition
Dublin City Council's LAB Gallery has just opened its latest exhibition, 'What does it mean to know?'
Magdalene laundries may be closed now, but their legacy lingers and this new work asks whether we, as Irish people, have reckoned with this painful past.
Irish artists Ethna Rose O'Regan and Sinéad McCann, have worked in collaboration with writer and sociologist Louise Brangan to produce two new artworks: No babies were born there, a large-scale sculptural text work, and I'm still there, a light and sound installation.
O'Regan's photographic series, 'After Magdalene' (2006-2009), was made in the last of the Magdalene laundries on Seán McDermott St, which officially closed in 1996 and is, poignantly, mere minutes from The Lab Gallery.
During this exhibition, the artists involved and the Dublin City Council staff at the Lab will be sensitive to and supportive of any patron who may find the exhibit or experience distressing in any way.
From June 12 to July 26, The LAB Gallery, Foley St, Dublin 1, Monday to Saturday 10-6pm.
Lough Key Forest Park, the home of Night and Day festival.
The festival
Roscommon County Council has happily confirmed the return of the Night and Day Festival, a three-day outdoor music festival in lovely, leafy Lough Key Forest and Activity Park.
From June 27 to 29, the festival forms part of Roscommon's outdoor recreation campaign, Breathe in Roscommon, which celebrates the county's natural beauty and endless opportunities for outdoor adventure in Ireland's Hidden Heartlands.
This year, there's a new wellness area alongside a musical bill that includes José González, KT Tunstall, Paul Brady, The Wailers, The Stunning, Lisa Hannigan, Sultans of Ping, Adwaith, and Fionn Regan among others.

Beat the Lotto review: Fizzy caper about numbers and a canny cabal trying to game the system
Selected cinemas; Cert G Grey, economically down in the dumps, and haemorrhaged by emigration, the Ireland of the 1980s was no funfair. But what a contrast it provides for this fizzy documentary caper about multi-coloured lottery numbers and a canny cabal trying to game the system. Ross Whitaker's film introduces us to Cork mathematician Stefan Klincewicz, who shortly after the 1987 rollout of our National Lottery spotted a flaw that might be exploited. It would involve investors and manpower, all of whom had to be convinced that the numbers in Stefan's head were worth buying into. But how watertight were those calculations, and had Stefan considered all eventualities? Aside from these issues coming into question, things got very interesting when the lottery company got wind of the painstaking plan and sought to put the kibosh on it. Awarded Best Irish Film at the Dublin International Film Festival, this is a superb evening out that manages to be cracking entertainment while also a snapshot of our near-distant past. At its heart, Whitaker fashions a mighty underdog tale where our national irreverence for authority is championed.

Portrait of last Battle of Britain pilot, Irishman John Hemingway, handed over at National Museum
A PORTRAIT OF the last Battle of Britain pilot, John 'Paddy' Hemingway, has been handed over at the National Museum of Ireland. Group Captain Hemingway, originally from Dublin, was the final surviving member of 'The Few', who took to the skies in 1940 to defend the UK against Luftwaffe attacks in what became a pivotal moment of the Second World War. He died in March this year, at the age of 105. His portrait will find a permanent home at Collins Barracks in Dublin. The portrait, unveiled by Mr Hemingway at the British Embassy in Dublin last year marking his 105th birthday, was painted by Welsh artist Dan Llywelyn Hall, 44. He was the last living pilot from the Battle of Britain and would have been 106 on July 17. Llywelyn Hall is known for numerous portraits, such as the Queen, Shane MacGowan, Amy Winehouse and other public figures. Llywelyn Hall said: 'I am pleased for the portrait of the Last of the Few, John Hemingway, to be a legacy for the public in John's native Ireland. 'It's especially meaningful this portrait will live in Dublin as it was John's home and held in great affection. 'This portrait serves as both a record of remarkable life and a testament to the rich personality beyond the uniform.' He added: 'I sat with John in 2024 in his nursing home and we chatted a lot. 'I was endlessly drawing in the process, taking photographs, videoing and gathering as much information as I could. Advertisement 'I couldn't epitomise his whole life in one canvas so I broke it down into a series of five, depicting different facets of his character and his life. 'For this one, it seemed appropriate that the National Museum chose this to represent his life. 'I am delighted it has ended up in a public collection. 'It can be looked at and kept under a watchful eye and be amongst other artefacts and objects and things which relate to his life.' Alamy Stock Photo Alamy Stock Photo Brenda Malone, curator of Irish Military History, said: 'We are delighted to accept this generous gift from Dan, and are particularly happy to record John Hemingway's story, through his portrait, with us. 'The National Museum collects and preserves the history of Irishmen and women's experience of military service around the world, especially in times of conflict. 'John's story stands as a representation for the many Irish people who served in the Royal Air Force during WWII. 'His portrait and history will form a valuable part of our collections which we hold in trust for the Irish people.' In 1940, Group Capt Hemingway was recorded as destroying a German airliner and the following day he downed a German Luftwaffe plane, but his Hurricane fighter was hit by anti-aircraft fire and he had to make a forced landing. He then became one of the frontline members of 11 Group's response to daily attacks by German aircraft, which went on to be known as the Battle of Britain. In August 1940, during hectic dogfights, he was twice forced to bail out of his Hurricanes, landing once in the sea off the Essex coast and in marshland on the other occasion. In 1941 he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) and in September of that year he was mentioned in despatches by senior officers.
