Lauren Hemp says England know what is at stake after opening defeat

The Lionesses' backs are against the wall after suffering an tournament-opening 2-1 defeat to France to set up what is already being billed as a 'must-win' meeting with 2017 champions the Netherlands. Victory could alleviate some of the danger of England becoming the first defending champions to crash out in the group stage, but they need to spark some swagger back into the side ahead of the critical clash. Thanks for your fantastic support in Zürich and back home ❤️ Now it's time to recover and reset – we'll see you all on Wednesday, #Lionesses fans 👊 — Lionesses (@Lionesses) July 5, 2025 'This team, a lot of the time, we thrive under pressure,' said Manchester City forward Hemp. 'Obviously it's one of those situations. Every game we go into, we want to win. 'From how we acted in the last 10 minutes (against France), we know what's at stake, and obviously we want to get as far as we can. 'We are reigning champions. It is important to remember that and gain confidence from that. 'I love playing in football matches where we need to win. Those are the games you want to be involved in. It's important we take confidence from parts of yesterday.' It was the introduction of late substitutions that sparked England – down by a quickfire first-half French double – to life, but Keira Walsh's 87th minute goal proved mere consolation. On Sunday, the Lionesses held a well-attended open community training session at their Zurich training base, Sportanlage Au, followed by an autograph signing. Most of the players who trained either did not feature in the opener or had short cameos, including major tournament debutants Grace Clinton and Michelle Agyemang, who made an argument for getting more minutes despite winning just her second England cap. The defeat was a first European Championship group-stage loss for England boss Sarina Wiegman, who led the Netherlands then England to their respective titles – the only head coach in men's or women's football to win a Euros with two nations. Saturday was hardly England at their best, but asked what the mood was in camp this morning – and whether or not team-mates had called each other out, Hemp replied: 'I'd say it was more of an arm around each other. 'When times are tough, we've had difficult conversations on the pitch at times, I think after it, off it, you've got to come together rather than push each other further apart. 'And that's what this team are good at – getting around each other and supporting each other. We're going to need everyone back up to their best on Wednesday.'

Marc Cucurella relishing Thiago Silva reunion at Club World Cup

Evergreen defender Thiago, who left Chelsea last summer, is still producing impressive performances at the age of 40 for current club Fluminense. The two clubs meet in the semi-finals of this summer's global tournament in New York on Tuesday. Thiago left Chelsea last summer after four years at Stamford Bridge (Bradley Collyer/PA) Fellow defender Cucurella said: 'We've watched some of their games. They have very good players, they are very determined and they have Thiago Silva. 'He's a legend of football, a top player. He's only played for big clubs and texted me before the (quarter-final) game saying, 'Let's go, hopefully we can see you in a couple of days'. I texted him saying, 'Let's go!' 'We have the opportunity to play against him again and hopefully we can do good things and win this game and play in the final which is what we want to do.' Thiago is one of the great Brazilian defenders of his era and enjoyed an accomplished four-year spell with Chelsea in what was thought to be the twilight of his career after being released by Paris St Germain in 2020. Thiago, centre right, has played a key role in Fluminense's run to the last four (Phelan M. Ebenhack/AP) His successes included Champions League glory in 2021 – a victory which earned Chelsea their place in the Club World Cup – and he remains a popular figure at Stamford Bridge. After returning to Brazil, he helped Fluminense avoid relegation last season and their unexpected run to the last four of this competition raised eyebrows. Thiago has started four of their five games and they have conceded just three times. Cucurella said: 'They have a very high level. They have shown in this tournament why they are going right until the final (stages). 'We've played against two Brazilian teams so far and now we will face a third. They fight until the end. 'We're happy to be in the next round and to have this experience of playing against the South American teams, which isn't very common. Overall, we're enjoying this tournament.' Chelsea booked their trip to New York with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Palmeiras in Philadelphia on Friday. They previously faced Brazilian opposition in the group stage when they were beaten by Flamengo. The Blues are reaching the end of a draining season which began last August and in which they won the Europa Conference League and qualified for the Champions League. Cucurella said: 'At this point, I think it is a good moment. We are in a good position. If we win one more game we can play a final. For all of us, it is very important. 'At this moment, we do not think about the fatigue. If we are tired, we want to enjoy this moment. It is a good opportunity to make something important, to be proud of our work and to play for Chelsea.' Meanwhile, English winger Jamie Gittens has described Chelsea as the 'perfect fit' after completing his reported £55million move from Borussia Dortmund on Saturday. Get to know Jamie Gittens! ℹ️ — Chelsea FC (@ChelseaFC) July 6, 2025 Gittens' arrival comes after the headline captures of Liam Delap and Joao Pedro in what is proving a busy summer at the club. The 20-year-old said in an interview with club media: 'The coach, Enzo Maresca, he was obviously showing me the way that Chelsea play and the way he likes to play with wingers. 'The system is built for wingers to attack their full-backs and create stuff and I thought doing it with Enzo in this system is a perfect fit for me.'

India crush England to level Test series thanks to record-breaking captain Gill

India captain Shubman Gill scored a mammoth 430 runs across two innings, becoming the first player in history to record scores of 150+ and 200+ in the same Test India have levelled the Test series against England at 1-1 thanks to a comprehensive victory at Edgbaston. Skipper Shubman Gill's scores of 269 and 161 set them on their way to a crushing 336-run win. England were set an almost impossible victory target of 608 when being sent in on the fourth evening after India declared their second innings on 427-6. And when openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett, plus Joe Root, fell before stumps, the game was all-but up. ‌ A rain delay did threaten some drama on day five and opened up the possibility of the hosts clinging on for a draw. But the weather abated in time for a 12.40pm start, and India got to work in claiming the seven wickets they needed. ‌ Only Jamie Smith's 88 provided any kind of meaningful resistance, but when his stubborn partnership with Ben Stokes was ended by Washington Sundar trapping the England captain LBW, India knew they were on course to level the series. Seamer Akash Deep took 6-99 including bouncing Smith out, sticking to his task despite the wicketkeeper launching him for two sixes earlier in the over. Deep took the final wicket, Brydon Carse falling for 38, to leave him with match figures of 10-187. But the Test match belonged to Gill, his 269 in the first innings steering India to a total of 587 all out having lost the toss and been put in by Stokes. England's first innings scorecard was curious to say the last, with Harry Brook's 158 and Smith's 184 contributing 342 runs out of 407 all out as six batsmen fell for a duck. Gill bludgeoned another 161 in the second innings from just 162 balls, but did come in for some criticism for waiting until India had a mammoth lead of 607 runs before pulling out, perhaps spooked by England's chase in the first Test at Headingley. But they still had plenty of time to seal the job on day five, even with the rain delay, as the final wicket fell before tea. The two sides now head to Lord's for the third Test, starting on Thursday. England will almost certainly rotate their bowling attack with Jofra Archer set to return to the fray for the first time in four years.
