Mexico edges U.S. to win Gold Cup title
Edson Alvarez scored the go-ahead goal in the 77th minute as Mexico overcame an early deficit to defeat the U.S. Men's National Team 2-1 in the final of the CONCACAF Gold Cup in Houston on Sunday night.
Mexico won its second straight Gold Cup and 10th overall. The U.S. are second with seven titles while Canada won it in 2000.
Chris Richards gave the U.S. the lead in the fourth minute but Raul Jimenez tied it in the 27th.
Alvarez scored Mexico's tournament-high fifth set piece goal. The first four were off corner kicks. The winner was a free kick that Johan Vasquez flicked to Alvarez for a diving header that was first ruled offside but the decision was overturned after video review.
Goalkeeper Angel Malagon preserved the lead in the second minute of stoppage time with a close-range stop of Patrick Agyemang.
Mexico is 6-2 in Gold Cup finals vs. the U.S.
Richards stunned the Mexicans with an athletic header, ending their streak of not allowing a goal at 387 minutes. It was the earliest goal in Gold Cup final history.
Sebastian Berhalter, whose father, Gregg, was coaching the USMNT in Copa America at this time in 2024 but was fired soon after the tournament, sent a free kick to the middle of the box where Richards had to step back to gain control of the ball before directing it to the underside of the bar where it fell across the line.
Jimenez roofed a through ball corner by Marcel Ruiz to make it 1-1. Afterward, Jimenez held up a Diogo Jota jersey to honor his former Wolverhampton, who along with his brother Andre Silva died in a car accident on Thursday.
Mexico led in attempts (16-6), shots on goal (8-3) and corner kicks (12-0).
The U.S. fielded essentially a B team for the Gold Cup so it was no surprise they were a decided underdog against a veteran Mexican side.
Playing in Houston didn't help. No national team in the world has less of a home-field advantage than when the Americans 'host' the Mexicans and the crowd of 71,000 was at least 75 percent pro-Mexico.

Two-time Stanley Cup winner Tyler Johnson announces retirement

Johnson most recently suited up for the Boston Bruins, but the forward played only nine games in his lone season with them and contributed two assists. In 747 games with the Lightning (2012-21), Chicago Blackhawks (2021-24) and Bruins, Johnson racked up 433 points, tallying 193 goals and 240 assists. He burst onto the scene in 2013-14, his first full year in the league, when he totaled 50 points (24 goals, 26 assists) and was named to the NHL All-Rookie team. When the Lightning made a deep playoff run in 2014-15, Johnson led all NHL players with 13 goals and 23 points that postseason. He suffered a broken wrist during the Stanley Cup Final, which Tampa Bay lost to Chicago. Johnson provided some key scoring depth for the Lightning in the 2020 and 2021 playoffs. He had a two-goal game against the Montreal Canadiens when the Lightning won their second straight Stanley Cup in July 2021.

Kyle Lowry to play 20th NBA season with hometown 76ers

Terms were not disclosed in the deal for the six-time All-Star, who debuted with the Memphis Grizzlies after they made him their first-round pick (No. 24) in the 2006 draft. 'Kyle's championship experience and Hall of Fame resume speaks for itself. He is a proven floor general with tremendous knowledge of the game that is a resource to everyone in the organization,' 76ers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey said. 'It's only fitting that his 20th NBA season will be right here in Philadelphia, the city he calls home.' Last season, the 39-year-old Lowry posted 3.9 points, 2.7 assists and 1.9 rebounds over 35 games (12 starts). Over his career, the former Villanova star has averaged 13.9 points, 6.1 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 1.3 steals in 1,173 games (898 starts) with the Grizzlies, Houston Rockets, Toronto Raptors, Miami Heat and 76ers. Among active players, Lowry ranks in the top 10 in assists (fifth, 7,099), 3-pointers (seventh, 2,205), steals (ninth, 1,499) and triple-doubles (10th, 21).
