A pioneering L.A.-style soul food bistro to close on Pico after 12 years

My 2 Cents, a soul food bistro that anchors a section of West Pico Boulevard that's home to multiple Black-owned restaurants, is set to close permanently on July 31. Opened by chef Alisa Reynolds in 2013, the restaurant became a neighborhood favorite thanks to a Southern comfort menu that's informed by Reynolds' L.A. upbringing, including turkey meatloaf, grit fries and BLT sandwiches with fried green tomatoes.
'It's something that I've been thinking about for the last few years,' Reynolds said of the restaurant's closure. 'For me, I think the best thing to do is to be able to feed people in their homes, do pop-ups, do collabs, and make the city excited again. I can do more as chef Alisa than I can do at My 2 Cents.'
Moving forward, Reynolds, who was a private chef for the Dodgers and rapper-actor Common before opening My 2 Cents, will focus on expanding the restaurant's catering arm, in addition to collaborations and pop-ups with local chefs and restaurants. She is also developing a product line.
'I want to inspire the world through my food,' she said. 'Sometimes you have to make such decisions, especially during times when everything is changing.'
Listed on The Times' guide to the 101 Best Restaurants in L.A. for two years running, My 2 Cents joins a growing list of notable restaurant closures this year, including fellow 101 awardee Here's Looking at You in Koreatown last month.
Reynolds cited a host of reasons for the closure, including significant financial loss following the COVID pandemic, Hollywood industry strikes, January wildfires and, most recently, ongoing raids from Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
'I just kept going. I was like, 'Nothing's going to stop us. We have to,'' said Reynolds, who called the decision to close My 2 Cents one of the hardest she's ever had to make. 'I had so many great customers and clients that believed in this restaurant. Because I think that it was more than a restaurant. It was like a little movement of love.'
This is not the first time My 2 Cents has been under threat of closure. In 2017, Reynolds launched a crowdfunding campaign to settle a lawsuit brought by former backers of the restaurant. Multi-hyphenate entrepreneur Issa Rae joined forces with musicians Solange and Earl Sweatshirt on a fundraising dinner that helped keep its doors open.
When pandemic shutdowns forced the restaurant's closure in 2020, Reynolds launched Tacos Negros, a takeout and delivery menu featuring tacos that took inspiration from pan-African foodways, including a six-hour-braised oxtail taco that the Food team listed on its guide to the 101 Best Tacos in L.A. The tacos became so popular that after restaurants reopened for dine-in, she added the most-ordered options to the permanent menu.
My 2 Cents is located in a shopping plaza that belongs to a single landlord, who Reynolds says is under immense pressure from developers.
'That's the hardest part because I love the neighborhood so much,' Reynolds said. 'But I don't want to invest any more money there because it could be gone any day.'
Just a couple doors down from My 2 Cents sits Stevie's Creole Cafe, a long-standing storefront that serves what late restaurant critic Jonathan Gold once called 'the best bowl of gumbo this side of New Orleans.' A few blocks east of that is Sky's Gourmet Tacos, a Black-owned taco shop that popularized a distinctly soulful approach to tacos that has since proliferated across the city.
'I just wonder if we're going to recognize Pico in 10 years,' Reynolds said.
When it first opened in 2013, My 2 Cents helped lay the foundation for an L.A.-inspired take on Southern comfort food to flourish across the city. Host of the Daytime Emmy Award-winning 'Searching for Soul Food' series on Hulu, Reynolds says the restaurant was one of the first in L.A. to put shrimp and grits on its brunch menu.
'My goal in opening [My 2 Cents] was, and the name is, my perspective on soul food,' said Reynolds, who's set her menu apart with scratch-made sauces, local produce and plenty of vegan and gluten-free options, including a six-cheese mac and cheese with brown rice penne. 'I thought that it would be my love letter to Los Angeles as a French-trained chef and yet, a Black girl who also remembers her mom made pork chops on Thursday.' At My 2 Cents, Reynolds coats her grilled pork chops in a sweet agave jerk sauce, an homage to the origins of Jamaican jerk seasoning, which was first used on wild boars.
In the homey dining room, vibrant art hangs on the walls and seasoning blends popular in Black households — Old Bay, Slap Ya Mama — balance on shelves next to cookbooks, with an array of eye-catching desserts, all of them baked by Reynolds' sister Theresa Fountain, arranged on the counter behind them.
Diners have plenty of opportunities to make memories at My 2 Cents before the restaurant closes its doors for good. Every Wednesday beginning this week, the restaurant will host a wine tasting alongside a Southern-inspired tapas buffet. A two-drink minimum grants customers access to the bottomless spread and the menu changes weekly based on Reynolds' whims, with past bites including jerk chicken sliders on pretzel bread and goat cheese with hot honey on naan. My 2 Cents will also continue to host its popular '90s brunch on Sundays, with a live DJ and guests encouraged to dress on theme.
Though the restaurant will close its doors at the end of this month, its final celebration will take place in the shopping plaza's parking lot on Aug. 1, complete with food, drinks and a live DJ. As for the future, Reynolds says fans of My 2 Cents can stay updated about events and pop-ups on Instagram.
'It's been a 12-year run,' Reynolds said. 'It's going to be a wild ride, but we are not going anywhere and that food is still going to be here forever.'

Unfortunately, another much-loved business has felt the bite, and now it's announced it'll be closing its doors. Hector's Cafe and Diner, located in New York's meatpacking district at Little West 12th Street, has been known for its no-frills good eats since it first opened the doors in 1949. It also became famous for appearing in the 1976 Robert DeNiro film "Taxi Driver," as all the diner scenes were shot inside. The restaurant, which has hundreds of glowing Yelp reviews, posted a sign on its door recently announcing the closing. "Dear customers, we're sad to announce that Hector's Cafe Diner will be closing permanently after 76 years on July 18, 2025," it read. Owner Nick Kapelonis, who took over the business 45 years ago, told Eater New York in a recent interview that Covid was the key reason he had decided to shutter the business. "Covid changed so much of our business," he said, mentioning that he wanted to take time with his family to reset, but also that he wouldn't rule out opening another restaurant somewhere else. The entire block will be taken over by the Whitney Museum, per a 2024 report from The New York Post. Hector's will close its doors for the last time on July 18. Customers took to social media to share their disappointment about the classic diner's shutdown. "Another longtime local that I love is leaving after 76 years," Facebook user Lauren Zelisco wrote in a post. "My mom and I had a girls weekend many years ago at the Standard Hotel High Line & I always remember our BEC next door at Hector's Cafe and Diner on our last day. She loved that this little diner was in 'Taxi Driver' & along w/the food, I loved that they taped the menu to the outside of the building." Yelp user Erin O. also shared meaningful memories about Hector's in a post on their official page. "Hector's is a place of memories for me - 3 a.m. stop-ins after partying in the MPD 20+ years ago with classmates," she wrote. "Anyhow, sat at the counter and ordered a huge plate of chilaquiles with an ice-cold Coke. The nabe is losing perhaps the only regular place to eat - no frills, no fuss, super casual. All that remains is glitz and glamour high-end and expensive. It's incredible what happened to this neighborhood over the last 30 years. Best of luck to the super nice staff as they look for new jobs in this economy." The home improvement industry benefited from an increase in business generated by do-it-yourself consumers in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic, which was short-lived as sales plummeted when the pandemic subsided. Once homeowners returned to their jobs and other activities, and no longer had time on their hands for home improvement projects, home improvement retailers experienced a decline in sales. Related: Huge furniture manufacturer closes and liquidates assets Home improvement retailer LL Flooring on Aug. 11, 2024, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection seeking a sale of its assets, after suffering from headwinds in the housing, repair, and remodeling markets that occurred when the Covid pandemic subsided, court papers said. LL Flooring agreed to a sale of its assets and distribution center to a subsidiary of private equity firm F9 Investments for a purchase price including a $1 million fixed amount, an inventory price of 57% of landed cost value of acquired inventory, and assumed cure costs. Inflation and supply chain issues from the Covid pandemic caused cost overruns of $30 million, as well as unexpected engineering problems, for TimberHP's construction and retrofitting of a former Madison, Maine, paper mill into the company's new wood fiber insulation manufacturing plant. The company's owner GoLab, which distributes TimberBatt, TimberFill, and TimberBoard wood fiber insulation products, was forced to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy to reorganize its debts on March 25, 2025, in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. The parent company of home improvement retailer Gardener's Supply Company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on June 20, seeking to sell its assets to a stalking-horse bidder as it faces financial distress. Gardener's Supply's parent and the lead debtor, America's Gardening Resource Inc., and four affiliates Gardener's Home LLC, Innovative Gardening Solutions Inc., IGH Inc., and Serac Corporation, listed $1 million to $10 million in assets and $10 million to $50 million in liabilities in their petition. The debtor is 100% owned by an employee stock ownership plan. Finally, Home improvement retail and wholesale company Mosaic Companies LLC filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy with plans to sell certain of its assets and wind down and liquidate other remaining businesses. Mosaic, founded in 2019, is a home improvement products leader in the surfaces industry for luxury wall and mosaic tile, floor tile, and stone slab to their retail and wholesale customers. The company currently operates through subsidiaries Walker & Zanger LLC and Surfaces Southeast LLC. Walker Zanger operates 11 showrooms and stone slab galleries across the nation, with locations in California, Texas, North Carolina, and New York. The company also works with 100s of authorized dealers nationwide to serve major U.S. metro areas, and distributes its products to other bath and kitchen design showrooms under its Walker Zanger and Anthology brands. Surfaces, a designer and value-added distributor of mosaic and specialty wall tiles, exclusively services commercial customers, such as Floor & Decor and Lowe's Home Improvement. Mosaic on April 8, 2025, sold its affiliate Opustone LLC, an importer and distributor of natural and engineered stone and tile with three Florida showrooms, to an affiliate of Home Depot in a $93.15 million stock sale. The debtor plans to sell its Walker Zanger and Anthology tile business assets in a bankruptcy sale to Transom Capital Group for a $17.5 million cash bid plus assumption of certain liabilities. Any remaining assets, such as the Surfaces Southeast wholesale and distribution business, will be marketed for sale and will be liquidated if the debtor is unable to sell it. The debtor will seek approval to obtain $15 million in debtor-in-possession financing from Truist, according to the declaration. Oldest restaurant in Los Angeles, claimed creator of French dip, to close

LOS ANGELES – The oldest restaurant in Los Angeles is set to close in the latest blow to the historic dining scene in the City of Angels. Cole's French Dip will close on Aug. 3 after 117 years of operation that included prohibition, two world wars and the rise of Hollywood. The news was first reported by DTLA Weekly and confirmed by USA TODAY in a July 7 visit. Owner Cedd Moses cited ongoing impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2023 writers and actors strikes as well as rising labor and rent costs in a statement provided to The Los Angeles Times. "The litany of reasons for closing are not unique to Cole's alone; they are affecting most independent restaurants in Los Angeles," Moses said in the statement. USA TODAY reached out to Pouring With Heart, the parent company of Cole's which operates other restaurants in California, Colorado and Texas, and did not receive an immediate response. The restaurant follows in the recent closure of The Original Pantry, which closed in March after 101 years, and the demolition of the Pacific Dining Car the same month. "By the time the Olympics get here, all these mom and pops will be gone," Moses said in the statement. "Hopefully it's a wake up call for the right people to step up and figure out a plan." Restaurant intertwined with Los Angeles history Cole's was opened by Harry Cole in 1908 in the Pacific Electric Building, once the terminus of the city's once ubiquitous Red Car trolley line. "Located near the financial center of the city, the place became a haunt for bankers, attorneys, newspaper types and politicians – as well as more respectable folks," Steve Harvey of the Los Angeles Times wrote of the restaurant's early days in 2009. It closed in 2007 before being purchased by Moses's 213 Nightlife, which would become Pouring With Heart, in 2008. The company completed a $1.6 million restoration which focused on keeping the historic environment. "Too bad Mickey Cohen isn't around anymore," Harvey wrote. "One can imagine the mobster admiring the handiwork of the bartenders with their ice picks." The Varnish, a speakeasy built in a former storage room, opened in 2009 and would redefine the Los Angeles nightlife scene. The bar, once a haunt of the dean of Los Angeles food writing Jonathan Gold, closed in 2024. Cole's claim of French dip invention challenged It is one of two restaurants in Los Angeles that claims to be the originator of the French dip sandwich. The other, Phillipe the Original, is less than two miles from Cole's. Cole's claims that in 1908, the chef dipped a sandwich in aus-jus to soften it for a customer who had bad gums. Phillepe's claims that in 1918, Philippe Mathieu dropped a French roll into a roasting pan filled with juices. The officer took the sandwich and returned the next day with friends to order more. However, Phillepe's has offered different versions of its claim, with co-owner Mark Massengill saying on a 2014 episode of "Cheap Eats" that the sandwich was born when in 1917, when Mathieu dropped the roll while making a sandwich for a firefighter. In 1951, Mathieu told the Los Angeles Times that the police officer story now offered by the restaurant is one half of the tale. "One day a police officer asked me if I would mind splitting one of these large loaves of French bread and filling it with 'some of the delicious roast pork,'" Mathieu said. The dip part came later. "One day a customer saw some gravy in the bottom of a large pan of roast meat. He asked me if I would mind dipping one side of the French roll in that gravy. I did, and right away five or six others wanted the same," Mathieu told the Times. The debate over who invented the French dip – and who makes the better sandwich – has been a long-running part of Los Angeles food culture.
